1 Volume: December Lock in 3 and 4 January It s all happening in the Gong Some history will be made in Wollongong in January On the 3 rd January, WIN Stadium will hold its first ever A-League Fixture with Sydney FC taking on the Newcastle Jets with kick off at 7:30. This is a great opportunity for football in the region, so spread the word and let s make this a game to remember. Tickets can be purchased from Ticketmaster at There s more great action the very next day (4 January 2015 kick of at 6pm), when Iran and Iraq play in a friendly in prepraration for their Asian Cup campaign. The Iraq national team will be based in Wollongong for a 6 day training camp. Iran is currently ranked 51 and Iraq is ranked 81 on the FIFA World Rankings. 2 CEO Update As we approach our last week in the office at Football South Coast for 2014, it s a great time to reflect on some of the things we have achieved for football in the region: Growth of 800 new winter comp players Summer Football growing in its second year to 1300 players The FSC Referee s Council was formed The introduction of the FSC Knights a program developed with the Disability Trust for children with special needs and the first of its kind in our region A partnership with Greenacres to provide clinics and competitions The formation of the Representative and Development Council to focus on coaching and player development Creation of Girls Only Development programs The hosting of the A-League All Stars training camp which involved significant engagement across schools and our junior clubs. Continuation of our free development programs to juniors across all clubs With a continued good relationship with the FFA and Sydney FC the first A-League fixture will be hosted at WIN Stadium on 3 January 2015 The introduction of the FSC All Stars which will continue in 2015 and was a great success in 2014 More recently we worked with Wollongong City Council to obtain funding for lighting at Thomas Dalton Park to deliver a training facility for the South Coast Wolves. Chairman s Corner As the year draws to an end I would like to take the opportunity to wish our Football Family a Wonderful Christmas and New Year. It has been an outstanding year and we hope that you have all enjoyed some of the great events that have come to the region including the A-League All Stars. Of course we also had the World Cup, and the Asian Cup will be in our own backyard as we welcome the Iraq National Football team to Wollongong as their training base in January Thank you to the backbone of our sport our volunteers. The AFC Asian Cup is an international tournament run by the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) The winning team becomes the champion of Asia and automatically qualifies for the FIFA Confederations Cup 16 teams compete in the Asian Cup and Japan is the current champion The 2011 Asian Cup Final was held in Qatar A television viewing audience of 484 million in 80 countries across the Asia Pacific region, Europe, North America and North Africa witnessed Japan defeat Australia 1-0 in the 2011 final. Japan has been the most successful team with 4 titles The first Asian Cup was held in Hong Kong in 1956 and Australia joined the Asian Confederation in 2007

4 An Update from the Illawarra Stingrays The Stingrays will be playing all 2015 home games at their inspirational ground JJ Kelly Park. On behalf of the Stingrays, I would like to personally thank CEO of FSC Ann-Marie in her assistance in getting both Coniston FC President John Karayiannis and myself in agreement of the new restructure of JJ Kelly. The work that this new committee (Coniston) has put in is unbelievable - amenities have been repainted both inside and out, all new toilet facilities with a massive cleanup both on and off the field. The Stingrays would personally would like to thank John and the new committee for bringing life back into this area. The Stingrays held its AGM several weeks ago and the club has a lot of new committee members. As President of a women's representative side, it is great to see that more than half of the committee are women, this is a great achievement. The new Stingrays committee has decided to change their playing strip for the 2015 season. The club will continue playing in the colours of pink and white but the design will change from the past several years. The committee has gone with Team Rhino (who are the official apparel supplier of both FSC and the South Coast Wolves) and the design they have come up with is exciting and we ll be looking for comments once the season kicks off. The Stingrays held their trials for the 2015 season several weeks ago and it was great to see some great numbers trialing for positions in the squads. The trials were one of the best I have seen in several years and I think we will see the Stingrays pushing for those finals in the 2015 season. The club has added a couple of new coaches and this should assist in our goal of qualifying in the championship rounds at the end of next year. Mick Wood, President

5 FSC Summer Football Summer Football wrapped up last weekend. It was again a successful 10 week competition across two locations in Corrimal and Shellharbour. In a great show of support across our football family we had many special guests join us to hand out medallions to all of our players. Thanks to Sydney FC s Corey Gameiro, players from the Illawarra Stingrays and South Coast Wolves and the Wolf himself. A HUGE THANK YOU to Corrimal Junior and Senior Football Clubs, Shellharbour Junior Football Club and of course our Junior Football Council. There were also many volunteers that assisted over the 10 weeks we could not have done it without you!

7 Football South Coast Office Changes Finals Time Finals Fresh! Football South Coast says goodbye to Nichole Mears. Nichole has been with FSC for the last 2 years and has coordinated our Academies, programs and social media. We wish Nichole all the best for the future and thank her for all her efforts for FSC. We will be recruiting to fill the role and details can be found on our website. Bobby Mazevski also joined the FSC team after the retirement of David Naylor. We have managed to save David from full retirement however and he will be assisting in the office in FSC is committed to keeping our football family updated on events, competition news and updates. As a result we welcome Julian Keith and Peter Prandalos as our FSC Reporters. Stay tuned for some great stories

8 Under 18 s Competition Finals Time Finals Fresh! In 2014, Football South Coast launched a new U18 competition. This new format allowed any club, either Junior or Senior to elect a team to be represented in this competition and was a positive step to ensure players between 15 and 18 are given the best opportunity to play in a competitive environment. The competition was developed to be a pathway for players aspiring to play in the Premier League or District League Youth Grade sides which are U21 and U20 competitions respectively. In 2014, eleven teams across junior and senior clubs participated and this was a key example of the benefits of unification of football in this region. The junior council and men s council have worked closely together in the development of this concept to ensure our youth grade players are given every opportunity to continue to play football at a competitive level. Players in Senior Youth Grade teams will be able to play in the U18 competition and competition rules will involve interchange to allow maximum playing time within the squad. Official applications for this new competition will be sought in January 2015.
