The STBA have a number of exciting events coming up for you. There are a number of tournaments with entries closing soon, including the GOSEN Tasmanian Teams Tournament and Bellchambers Cup and the City of Hobart. These tournaments are great fun and I encourage all players to enter. The STBA Committee have also organized a Quiz Night to be held on Saturday the 1 st of April, which will be a great social event. More information and entry details for these events can be found later in this edition. The STBA s website is expanding, with new information and photos being uploaded regularly. Recently, the State Teams page has been updated with photos ranging from 1947 to current state teams. Thanks to Alan Bottomley for his work on this page. The Tasmanian Open Team is currently in Albert Park for the 2017 Li-Ning Ede Clendinnen Shield, where they are competing against the best players from around Australia. We wish them the best of luck. If you would like to write an article for the newsletter or have suggestions as to what you would like to see included in the newsletter, please me at editor@southerntasbadminton.com All the best, Rebecca Green, Editor
2 On the 13 th and 14 th of May the GOSEN Tasmanian Team Championships and Bellchambers Cup will be played at the Harry Thompson Badminton Centre, 101 Cascade Road, South Hobart. The Tasmanian Teams Championships will incorporate two divisions (Open and Division Two), which are open to both senior and junior players. The Bellchambers Cup is a doubles championship where players are randomly drawn to play with multiple partners over the day, accumulating points after each game. The player with the most points at the completion of the day is the winner. Entries close on the 28 th of February (but if you enter soon after you may still get in). To enter please contact Brent Munday by (brent.munday@education.tas.gov.au) or text ( ). The entry cost is $110.00, which includes entry to both the Tasmanian Team Championships and Bellchambers Cup, playing shirt, shuttles for the Team Championships and presentation dinner. Payment must be made by EFT to the following account: - Account Name: MGillie - BSB: Account No: [please use your name as the reference] This payment will confirm your entry into the event. Please notify Brent via or text when payment has been made. Also add the shirt size you would like ordered for your GOSEN Tasmanian Team playing shirt in the same or text. Please contact Stephen Gale on FACEBOOK and he can add you to the GOSEN Tasmanian Teams Championships Page.
3 NEW STATE-TEAMS PAGE NOW ON THE STBA WEBSITE Our former Webmaster, Alan Bottomley, undertook the task of getting photos of Tasmanian State Teams onto our website. Alan recently completed this project and now there is a photo of nearly every Senior Team right back to the year There are also quite a few Under-17 and Under-19 team photos from the year 2000 up to the present. The players represented in these photos are the cream of our Tasmanian badminton players and now their names and images will be readily accessible to all. (Note: The names that go with the pictures are embedded into their respective images and thus are not directly searchable as text). If you were ever a member of one of these teams, or you were associated in some other way, such as you were a parent of, a friend of, or a coach of one of those players then you will find the images very interesting. If you did not have any links to those teams, you are still encouraged to browse the photos and soak up a bit of the proud history of your club and badminton in Tasmania in general. The pictures below are two of about 80 photos of State teams that are now available on the State Teams page. The photo on the right is special in that it is of the last Tasmanian team to have won the national competition - the Clendinnen Shield! Defeating all the other States was a magnificent achievement! The photo on the left was taken exactly 50 years later. How many differences between the two pictures can you spot? (It could be a question in the upcoming quiz night!) To see ALL the State Team photos please follow this link: southerntasbadminton.com.au/tasmanian_st ate_teams.html All of the images can by enlarged (by clicking on them) and can be copied/downloaded if desired. Feel free to let friends and family know about this new addition to our website, especially if they have information to add City of Hobart The 2017 City of Hobart Tournament will be played on the 1 st and 2 nd of April at the H. Thompson Badminton Centre, 101 Cascade Road, South Hobart. Entries close on the 21 st of March. To enter please visit

6 FROM THE COMMITTEE Flooring The committee has formed a subcommittee to specifically progress the flooring activities for the centre. The subcommittee consists of Rob Brockman, Bob Grundy, Will Ponsonby, Bronwen Taylor and Nathan Bevin. Regular updates on the progress of this activity will be provided in newsletters. Currently we are firming the quotes for flooring types, and progressing some discussions around this. We are also attempting to confirm whether certain flooring types would allow us to hold an international badminton event in our hall. STBA Committee Meeting Minutes Some interest has been expressed by members in the committee meeting minutes, and these will be published on the noticeboard in the hall going forwards. Lighting The STBA committee is in the process of sourcing some LED type tube lights to trial for one or two courts as an alternative to current lighting. Badminton Development and Engagement Officer The STBA has advertised a Development and Engagement Officer role with the intent of helping us to grow and improve participation rates in badminton. This will include activities such as working with schools and the general community to promote the sport, get more people involved, develop our pathways to badminton, and improve our membership numbers. Ultimately we want to increase the interest and numbers in the sport we ve all enjoyed, some of us for a very long time! If anyone is interested, there is information on the notice board, our advertisement is also on seek, or you can contact Nathan Bevin directly on nbevin@southerntasbadminton.com.au or for more information. Applications close 16 th March. Schools and Junior Roster Rowan Henderson has agreed to take on running the Schools and Juniors roster this year, and we hope to make this an attractive roster for all involved. Big thanks to Rowan for his time and commitment! GOSEN Summer Invitational Tournament Thanks to all who participated in our first GOSEN Summer Invitational Tournament. This is the first time we ve run this tournament, and for a fairly early tournament it was well received. Many participants expressed their enjoyment of the event, particularly the round robin format which meant a healthy number of games for all, win or lose! Thanks to Will Ponsonby for organising, and Rob Brockman for his official refereeing, and both Will and Rob for their organisational efforts in running the event during the day, along with others who assisted.
