6 DEVELOPMENT HQ NEWS January has been a fantastic month at Development HQ! We held our inaugural Season Launch/Open Day (see below) which attracted an amazing 250 people to the Centre. Families new to the game experienced the Centre for the first time; players from our rosters came with friends; players from our Senior State Team conducted a training session to showcase their skills and talents. We had a fastest smash competition, lucky door prizes, balloon hitting for the little ones, the electronic shuttle feeder got a great workout and juniors were welcomed to join in a pop-up training session with our coaches! There was a fantastic energy and vibe in the centre on this day and I was really proud to be there showcasing our wonderful sport, facilities and players to all who came along. Thank you to all who volunteered their time to make this day such a success. NEW PLAYER PATHWAY At the Season Launch we also launched our new Player Pathway. Some of you may have seen the Pathway poster displayed in the canteen area of the Centre. The Pathway has been created and now displayed in the Centre for the purpose of showcasing all of the opportunities available for anybody wishing to play Badminton at our Association and to assist in highlighting what steps players can take in fulfilling their badminton goals. In creating the new Pathway, I identified a few critical gaps and products that needed to be implemented this year to create a smooth transition from experiencing Badminton in a school environment (Sporting Schools Program) all the way through from junior level - social rosters - state representation and beyond. Creating a space for juniors to play with their peers and parents on a regular basis, supported by coaching was a critical inclusion to this pathway. A new School Holiday program was conducted over this Summer break with a whopping 130 children and parents coming
7 along over the 4 morning sessions! Following the School Holiday Program, these children/parents and many more children can now continue to play at our Centre in the new Saturday Afternoon Badminton Kids Sessions. These are being introduced in Term 1 commencing Saturday 10 February from 1pm. These afternoon sessions will give every child (1-18yrs) a chance to develop their skills, through coaching and playing whilst making new friendships. Following on from Saturday Afternoon Badminton Kids in Term 2, the new Super Smash Junior Roster will commence alongside Badminton Kids for those juniors who really want to challenge themselves and play more competitive games in a team. If you know a child who would like to play in the Super Smash Junior Roster please me their details as registration and initial expressions of interest to play in this roster is required so we can begin to gauge numbers. At the Season Launch/Open day we also launched our Centre s new positioning statement which is Southern Tasmanian Badminton Association Centre of Badminton Excellence & Healthy Active Lifestyles. This sets the tone, culture and purpose for how we aim to position our Association for the present and the future. In essence this means that we want to do everything really well. Our aim is to provide excellent coaches, run excellent rosters, give everybody in Southern Tasmania the best opportunity to play badminton, have excellent facilities and put our best foot forward at all times (perhaps our racquet foot would be best!). We also understand that the majority of our members enjoy playing badminton not only for the game side of things but enjoy it equally as much for the socialisation and the health and fitness benefits it provides to us on a week to week basis. Badminton is such a great sport for this! In encouraging further health and fitness opportunities we will aim to introduce fitness classes and health/wellness workshops and additional social opportunities to our members over the coming year. This will be an exciting extension to our facility. BADMINTON IN SCHOOLS - SPORTING SCHOOLS.GOV.AU Did you know that our accredited badminton coaches go into primary schools through the Australian Government grant funded Sporting Schools Program? This program is free to schools and is a fantastic way children are getting to experience badminton for the first time in their lives. In Term 2 of 2018 Badminton Australia is also aiming for badminton to be an approved Sporting School sport for High Schools so we can deliver coaching to high school students through this same program at no cost to the School - exciting times! So if you are a teacher, or a parent of a child who would like our coaches to come into your school this year please either register at sportingschools.gov.au (if you are a teacher) or if you are a parent please speak to your schools sports teacher and let them know that badminton is a registered Sporting School sport and we are ready to come in. Our coaches have participated in the Sporting Schools program now for the last two years and hundreds of children
8 from all around Hobart have had the opportunity to experience badminton through this great program and your school could be next. The student s feedback we receive is always the same - they love it and they want more of it!! COACHING On a personal level I just completed my Level 1 Coaching course conducted by Rowan Henderson which also entailed a really informative online component. I thought what better way to get started than to jump right in after completing it and conduct coaching sessions at the School Holiday Program with the children!! Sounds crazy I know!! Did I survive? Yes! Was it fun? Yes!... and my what a great learning curve it was! I definitely have the coaching bug now and can t wait to coach more!! You may already know, but if you don t, I grew up playing badminton from a small child hitting with my family on a Sunday night to representing Tassie at senior level and received an Australian ranking at junior level. For as long as I can remember I have always had a keen interest in giving back to this sport that gave me so much. The moral of this story is if you too have ever had any inclination to give something back to the game, be it time or even to coach, now is a great time to get in touch with me as we have so many new junior programs and opportunities on the horizon and good people are always needed to assist in some way. Please me at development@southerntasbadminton.com.au And finally. We look forward to seeing you and your children at the new and very fun Saturday Afternoon Badminton Kids sessions commencing this Saturday 10 February. Good luck to our State Senior Team players who will compete at the National Carnival at the end of February. Come Play!
