Tournaments We are now well into the tournament season, and it s very pleasing to see so many from the south attend this weekend s event in Launceston. The most pleasing aspect is that we had many first timers attend. Although they weren t as successful as they hoped, the experience gained will be very beneficial, especially our members recently successful in gaining selection in the State U19 team. The team consists of; STBA: Isaiah Sadiq, Mathew Sojan, Darcy Webster-Jones, Thomas Green, Yvette Duhig, Tara Thiessen, Rebekah Thomas, Alia Haider and Natasha Leitch NTBA: Sharad Rai NWBA: Kayden Gardner We wish them all the best when they take on the mainland states from the 7 th to the 14 th of July. Under 19 State Team Recently the Tasmanian Under 19 team was selected to participate in the Under 19 Australian Championships incorporating the CP Maddern Teams Event.

2 Under 19 State Team Recently the Tasmanian Under 19 team was selected to participate in the Under 19 Australian Championships incorporating the CP Maddern Teams Event. This tournament is being held in Hobart from the 7 th to the 14 th of July this year. Congratulations to the following players who were selected: Isaiah Sadiq Mathew Sojan Darcy Webster-Jones Thomas Green Sharad Rai Kayden Gardner Yvette Duhig Tara Thiessen Rebekah Thomas Alia Haider Natasha Leitch We wish them all the best when they take on the mainland states. Attention Players with Greater Experience! The premiere badminton event of the 2018 calendar for people who are 35 or over is coming on the 16th & 17th June. Entries have now closed for this event. The tournament is a team s format where players get at least 12 matches spread across 2 days. In the interest of promoting drug free sport there will be a limit of no more than 12 medications per player, however, you can wear as many prosthetic braces as you wish. There will also be a social gathering on Saturday night at a local watering establishment where you can eat some good food, drink some good beverages and tell magnificent lies about how well you played. So block out the 16th and 17th of June in your diary and come and play some badminton! And always remember that the older we get the faster we were!

3 Recent Results Roster 1 Results Congratulations to the winners of Roster 1! GOSEN Teams Championships and Bellchambers Cup The 2018 GOSEN Teams Championships and Bellchambers Cup was held on the 19 th and 20 th of May. It was a fantastic tournament with support from local, intrastate and interstate players. We would like to thank Brent Munday, Mathew Gillie and Robert Brockman for their efforts in making this event possible. This year Launceston took out the Division 1 title for the first time and also took out Division 2.

2018 Thomas and Uber Cups The 2018 Thomas and Uber Cups were held in Bangkok, Thailand from the 21 st to the 27 th of May.

They are badminton s oldest trophies, with the Thomas Cup being first presented in 1939 and the Uber Cup being first presented in 1956.

The main results were as follows: Greg Meaghan attended the event and made the following observations; To watch the World Cup of badminton, live at Impact Arena in Bangkok, was simply an amazing

The Thomas Cup is for the Men s World Team Badminton Championships, and the Uber Cup is for the Women s World Team Badminton Championships. They are badminton s oldest trophies, with the Thomas Cup being first presented in 1939 and the Uber Cup being first presented in Since 1984 the two championships have been held together biennially. This year Australia came 13/16 in both the Thomas and Uber Cups. The main results were as follows: Greg Meaghan attended the event and made the following observations; To watch the World Cup of badminton, live at Impact Arena in Bangkok, was simply an amazing experience for a badminton tragic like myself. The best male and female players in the world representing their countries were displaying their talents to a sell-out, very vocal live audience and a massive television coverage. The lengths of the rallies were breathtaking, with most individual matches usually taking hours to achieve a result. The singles clash between Victor Axelson of Denmark and Lin Dan of Malaysia was awe inspiring to witness with Victor prevailing in a tight contest. There were so many highlights on the court, but my off-court buzz moment came when I was able to meet and talk to No. 1 Men s player from Denmark, Victor Axelson. Greg Meaghan
