1 Maroondah Magic Basketball Club Newsletter February 2014 From the President. Well Christmas & New Year have flown by and we are well and truly back into the summer basketball season. The summer season has proven a little difficult weather wise with multiple games cancelled at Lilydale Stadium in early February, due to extreme heat. (please see the Heat Policy over). The Club is very well positioned both on and off the court. On the court we have field 116 teams during the summer season (the largest club within KMDBA). This is an amazing effort and a credit to all players, coaches, team managers and of course the committee. The Club continues to strive to coach and play the game with sportsmanship as a central value. Off the field the committee is working extremely hard to strengthen our Club and work closely with the Association to ensure we provide a quality product to our members. We have strengthened our Coaches thru education and training. While improving our coaches is an important strategy for us we also emphasize retaining good coaches. These strategies are the core of our growth over the next few seasons. The Committee is always looking for assistance and I encourage anyone with an interest to approach myself or any other committee member to discuss options. Good luck to all teams as we head towards the end of the summer season. Remember to show outstanding sportsmanship to all players and coaches and referees and oppositions!!!! UNIFORM SHOP DORSET PRIMARY Monday pm Term 1 HEAT POLICY s The Kilsyth & Mountain District Basketball Club follows the following Heat Policy The Club will be running 3 free basketball clinics, for new play- ers:- 1. Kalinda Primary Gym on Friday 21st March 2. Dorset Primary Gym on Friday 28th March 2. Dorset Primary Gym on Friday 4th April The Uniform Shop will be open for parents to purchase uniforms & accessories, Friday 4th April. If you know of any siblings or friends who would like to play, please pass on these dates and encourage them to come along to have some fun! We will also be running basketball clinics at other schools in the local area for Preps to Grade 2 children, so look out for those as well! This is a great way for our future stars to get involved in basketball. CALLING ADULT COACHES your help is greatly appreciated for 1 or 3 of these nights. Session Running Sheets will be provided for your use. Thank you in anticipation of your help. K&MDBA Heat Policy With the expected hot weather during January & February, we would like to make everyone aware of the K&MDBA Heat Policy. It is recommended that all players ensure they are sufficiently hydrated both before, during and after their games. Special Rules for Games During Hot Weather (Junior & Senior Comp) These rules are to be implemented when the court surround temperature is 30C as read on the thermometer. 1. Referees are to encourage coaches to use their time out in each half. 2. Regular substitutions are to be made to ensure the safety of the players. Coaches, do not leave players on for the whole half. 3. At the half way point of each half, the referee shall call a special time out so that players can have a drink and wipe their faces etc. 4. All players should drink as much water as possible during and immediately after the game to prevent dehydration. 5. Should the ambient temperature reach 40C then the game shall be cancelled.

3 One of the more common points of discussion heard around the club is about team selection why is that player in there/ I do not like this coach / my child is better than others are and deserves to be in a higher team/ etc. The process of putting teams together is a long, involved and carefully considered one and begins at least two months before the new season. It starts with finding out who is playing next season (via the intent to play forms currently being filled in) and who will be available to coach. Players who play representative basketball also need to be factored in each rep player carries points and there is a maximum amount of points allowed per team. In addition, new players and player transfers also need to be catered for. The second step is to consider the players their strengths/ability and what their needs are for development (do they need to consolidate their skills before going into an a grade team? Are they too intimidated by other players in their current team ). We also aim - particularly in the younger age groups - to keep children in the same half year (birth date) together where possible so they get used to playing with each other (although this is not always possible because of ability, number of players and coaches etc.). Other factors that are taken into account include friendships, personal likes and dislikes, training time availabilities, are they playing other sports that impact on training availability, etc. When all of the above are taken into account, age coordinators spend a lot of time juggling player needs, club needs and last minute changes! Last minute changes are the biggest hurdle to overcome as it takes a number of phone calls and team revisions just to accommodate one last minute player not playing or someone who decides they now want to play - that is why Intent to Play forms are very important. If you have any concerns/ considerations about your child/children and team placement, please discuss them with your age coordinator as soon as possible. Whilst everything is considered, we cannot commit to catering to all requests. Sometimes this means that they play many seasons with children that are older but at the same skill level or alternatively, play in the Under 9 competition, even though they may still be eligible for miniball. It is about how they can be challenged, making them better players in the long term, but also allowing them to play, just to enjoy the game, if they wish. Any questions about where your child may be placed next season should be discussed in the first instance with our Miniball & Under 9 Co-ordinators, well before the end of the current season. New players should also discuss team placement with our Miniball Co-ordinator.

4 K&MDBA AWARDS On Monday 11th November 2013 K&MDBA held its Annual Junior Domestic Awards Night at Club Kilsyth. Maroondah Magic was present to receive nominations and awards. Dinner and company was fantastic!
