1 Newsletter Issue 27 February 2019 Evening Winners Announced Volunteer of the Year Award announced 5-a-Side Played at Warilla Welcome Welcome to your February newsletter and the special Bowls NSW issue. Congratulations to all the nominees and winners from the night. Trevor Turner of Forster Bowling Club was named Volunteer of the Year. Trevor was nominated by his club for his services as Welfare Officer. Trevor was supported at the evening by his five daughters and their families. In this issue we also wrap up the 5-a-Side that was held at Warilla in early February, this is the second year of the 5-a-Side competition and it is proving to be a popular club event. For more information on Bowls NSW Events contact us on The Bowls NSW is the pinnacle event of the yearly bowling calendar, a night that we celebrate the achievements of our players from the previous season. This year s Evening was held on 20 February at the prestigious Kirribilli Club in Lavender Bay. Hosted by MC Pete Graham, former 2UE radio presenter and attended by 250 guests including Bowls NSW Patron His Excellency the Hon. General David Hurley AC DSC (Ret d), Governor of NSW, Patron of Women s Bowls NSW Mrs Linda Hurley and the Hon. Natalie Ward (representing The Hon. Stuart Ayres Minister for Sport). The night was elegant and the fitting setting to present the top honours of our sport to our talented players. Congratulations to all the award recipients and nominees. The Bowls NSW Player Awards are held every year in February. Information on the evening can be requested by contacting marketing@bowlsnsw.com
2 Volunteer of the Year Trevor Turner - Forster Bowling Club Trevor Turner and Andrew Eisenhauer from NeuRa Trevor became a member of the Forster Bowling Club in 2003 and the following year he accepted the position of Welfare Officer, a position he still holds today. During Trevor s sixteen years as Welfare Officer he has carried out his duties with reverence and respect to the club s members. He often visits unwell club members at home to see if he or the club can be of assistance. Trevor was instrumental in setting up a transport system to enable club members to travel to medical centres and hospitals. In recent times Trevor himself has been in ill health but he has carried on his welfare duties regardless. Many members of Forster Bowling Club have stated you can always have a welfare officer, but no one will ever do it as good as Trevor. 7 5 - A-Side Gorillas Show True Strength in Final The Warilla Gorillas are the winners of the 2019 NSW 5-a-Side. They secured three wins in the singles, pairs and fours against the Engadine Cougars in the final. The Gorillas were a consistently strong side throughout their campaign and it was no mistake they found themselves in the final, as the best team overall. The first session of the final had the spoils shared, with Warilla taking the pairs However they dropped four shots on the last end to lose the triples Four shots separated the two sides moving into the remaining disciplines. It took a huge comeback from Corey Wedlock (Warilla) to win the singles. Wedlock had only dropped one singles match across the four days but he didn t leave without a tough final contest. He trailed Engadine s David Ferguson early on and it looked like the tie was over. He then took 9 unanswered shots to win the singles The final was a great tussle between two of New South Wales Blues representatives with the final drawing an abundance of applause for both players throughout. In the fours, it was again Engadine who started most promising. However, with the support of a vocal home crowd, the Gorillas stormed home to win the disciplines 3-1 and take the champion s crown. Bowls NSW would like to take this opportunity to thank all the participating clubs. There was certainly some exceptional bowls played over the four days. A big thank you to our hosts Warilla Bowls and Recreation Club for their high quality facilities and their homely hospitality.
8 Peet Kay Series Tasmanian trip 2019 The Peet Kay players have been going to Tasmania since This year was no exception - 47 tourists flew in to smoky Hobart, toured the west coast and resided in Devonport to play the test series in the north west region. Clubs chosen by Tasmania were South Burnie (Welcome Day), Ulverstone, Wynyard and Port Sorell. The PK trophy was won by NSW 2 tests to one. The Taswegians will return to Sydney in August to contest the trophy. Wanted - Junior Bowls Lake Cargelligo Bowling Club is looking for donations of smaller sized bowls. The Lake Cargelligo area is gripped by drought and the club has had a lot of interest from new lady bowlers and junior bowlers. They are very keen to play, as it gets them off their farms and away from the stresses of feeding stock etc for a few hours. Sizes required are from 3 down. Lake Cargelligo is struggling financially and cannot afford to pay for sets for the bowls, they are happy to help with freight costs. If you have any bowls that you could donate please contact ; Kerry Davis or KMDavis@westserv.net.au Upcoming Events World Cup Warilla 4-13 March Australian Sides Championships Ettalong Memorial 0-14 April To advertise your club tournments send your flyer to Bowlsnsw@bowlsnsw.com.au For more upcoming events go to Social Media for @bowlsnsw Contributions to the Newsletter If you have a story and or photo that you would like to appear in the newsletter please it to; tricia@bowlsnsw.com.au Alltories will be considered for publication, no guarantee can be made as to if or when the story will be published.
