1 WEEKLY BULLETIN EDITION 1 APRIL 2016 by Peter Glass Welcome to our weekly bulletin. It has been created at the suggestion of the Board to keep members (particularly those who haven t got ) of what s happening around your club. This bulletin will be a weekly issue during the pennant season and will provide details of all pennant matches, including any special performances of note. During the offseason the bulletin will be issued on an as required basis. It will not however replace the quarterly Newsletter that Peter Blythe so professionally presents to members. If, in the future, any member wishes to include an item in a particular issue, please provide Peter Glass with the necessary information. WHAT S HAPPENING AT AVENUE BOWLING CLUB NEW MEMBERS At the April meeting of the Board Brian Trevena s application to re-join the club was accepted. Most members know Brian and I m sure you ll make his return to the club most enjoyable

2 Geoff Thorpe s application was also accepted. Geoff is an experienced bowler and will be transferring from Lara. He has already participated in a few social bowls events as well as last Saturday s Tournament. If you see Geoff on the green, please introduce yourself and make him welcome. HEALTH & MOBILITY TOURNAMENT LADY SKIPS The club ran a successful Tournament on Saturday 16 April and hosted 14 teams. Visitors came from Moonee Ponds, Bacchus Marsh, Lara, Fitzroy, Heathcote, Gisborne and Highton Bowling Clubs, as well as a good representation from our own members. Hopefully more teams will enter next year, as our second green will be fully functional by then. Winners for the day were a team comprising Wayne Turner (lead) Roy Davies (2 nd ) Sam Boslem (3 rd ) and Beryl Ham (skip). Runners up were a team comprising Graham McDonald, Jarryd Davies, Alex Porously & skipped by Marion Pokrovsky. Congratulations to all winners and to everyone who attended on what was an excellent day s bowls. The club is most appreciative of Health & Mobility becoming a sponsor of the club, and that they ve sponsored this tournament.

3 LORNA LUCAS GREEN Re-surfacing was completed late last week and now requires the rinks to me marked. There is still some work to be done on the surrounds, but it is looking great and everyone is looking forward to trying out the new surface. For those members who don t know, we have been awarded a $25,000 Grant from the Shire of Moorabool towards the cost of the re-surfacing, and we are hopeful that a further contribution will be received from the State Government, however any funds may not be received until the 2017/18 financial year. BAKER S DELIGHT CUP v GISBORNE This game was scheduled for Saturday 23 April 2016, however seeing it s a long weekend a decision was made to defer the game until September (probably as a practice match). Due to the deferment of the game, the usual Saturday Scroungers will be back this weekend. It is a fun competition which encourages bowlers to draw and not drive. It is not as easy as some may think. It is proposed to run the competition up until the practice matches start, so if you haven t yet had a go, put your name on the weekly nomination form at the club. Apart from the weekly prizes, there is a 4-weekly prize for the highest point getter during that time. Modesty prevents me from telling you all who won the initial prize this season.

4 MIDWEEK SOCIAL BOWLS Tuesday & Thursday social bowls are now in full swing, with numbers being good. You can nominate a team (pairs) for Tuesday, or enter as a single entry. Thursdays is a single entry format. Starts at am hot lunch available. Also don t forget the weekly jackpot on these days. As at time of writing this, the jackpot stands at $300, from a selection of 22 numbers. It s got to go off soon. Join in the day and give yourself every chance of winning big bucks. NOT SO WELL MEMBERS Jim Kenny and Jack Fernihough have recently been hospitalised, however the good news is that they are home now and back to normal (poor Shirley & Jean). COMMUNITY SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT Australian Hearing, which has an outlet in Melton have offered the club, as part of their Community Promotion, FREE hearing tests for our members. The proposed date for these tests is Thursday 2 June 2016 and any member wishing to have their hearing tested by suitably trained staff should put their names on a sheet that will be at the club.
