1 Pennant Hills Men s Bowling Club Newsletter 18, 16 June 2016 A précis of what s happening at the Men s Club What happened? Major Singles Generously sponsored by Bev and John Archer This match was washed out last Sunday due to some unexpected rain. John Archer and Paul Leverett, who have built up a formidable pairs combination over the past couple of years, had to put aside team loyalties and battle it out for personal glory. John has had the honour of being our Champion in past years, but for Paul, this was his debut singles final. Paul "shot out of the blocks" and was 11-0 after six ends, but the wily campaigner who does not know how to give in won the next six ends to be down only after 12 ends. Paul then went to a lead after 19 ends, and ends were traded but to Paul's advantage. A nine shot lead after 27 ends was whittled back to four after 31, but Paul picked up a 1 and a 2 over the next two ends to claim his first title. He can now boast that he has a complete set of championship badges - singles through to fours. The match was a dour affair, as was expected, and credit to both players for their sportsmanship during the game. We also wish to thank John and Bev Archer for their continued sponsorship of the event, and for Bev being in attendance to present the "rewards". John said when presented with his runner-up prize that this was the first time he had been able to get money from his wife. Report: Ken Byatt.

2 Paul and John after the Singles final. Major Pairs Sponsors Travel By Design One of the second round games was completed on Saturday. Cliff Fairbrother and Len Ward (2015 Minor Pairs champions) were matched up against Matthew George and Gary Havron, the latter (on paper) expected to win. However, Cliff and Len had other ideas, and it was a neck-and-neck tussle all the way. Matt and Gary needed one shot on the last end to send the match to "overtime", and the situation was such that the umpire was called in to decide. The result - Cliff and Len won the end, to win the match Congratulations, and well played Matt and Gary. Report: Ken Byatt. See the board for all matches of the next round. Players please note that warm-ups are not to take place on the rink allocated for you match. Upcoming match times are being influenced by various events, including, but not limited to, the State pairs schedule and some Pennant s finals. Players have been notified, and the rest of us should be entertained until at least early July. For any player that has not entered this competition, the match committee would appreciate if you can nominate as a substitute. There are still many games to play and someone is likely to be unavailable over the course of the competition. Call Russell and he will post a list for players to contact.

3 Queen s Birthday Carnival was cancelled due to fine weather. What s coming up? Ian Millar has ed eligible Rookies about the 2016 Singles & Pairs competitions, advising that entry forms are now online with a closing date of July 30. From Bowls NSW: Who can play? The Bowls NSW Rookies is open to players who have been playing bowls for less than 30 months. To be eligible to enter you must not have been a bowler with any club (anywhere in the world) before 1 April Also you can only play in the Rookies twice anyone who played in both the 2014 and 2015 Rookies is ineligible to enter in Previous State winners are ineligible to enter. What you ll play You will play under the laws of the Sport and the Conditions of Play for the Rookies. This means (simply) that you can t kill the end; the jack is re-spotted on the 2m mark. In Singles you use four bowls and the first player to score 17 shots will win the game. In Pairs each player uses three bowls (lead plays three then skip plays three). Pair s games are 12 ends. Where & when you ll play In both singles and pairs, the initial stage of play will be round robin in sections at local venues Singles - Sat 27 & Sun 28 August Pairs - Sat 17 & Sun 18 September Zone Finals (if needed) will be played on Sat 24 & Sun 25 Sept This event is all about playing so we try to ensure that everyone gets at least two games. The best performed teams then progress to the knockout stages. Zone winners proceed to the State Finals at Raymond Terrace on 8-9 October. Zone winners may apply for travel assistance to help towards their cost of attending the State Finals. The singles and pairs are played at different times, so have a crack and enter both! Entry fees are $25 per player, per event. Entries Close Friday 30 July 2016 Notes Sul Verde will cease operations soon. If anyone has a discount voucher make sure you use it now. In the meantime, the restaurant will operate in reduced hours: - Open for lunch and dinner on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday - Open for dinner only on Saturday

6 Memo from BA, found in rnswba.org.au/news, May 29 COMMUNICATING THE RESULTS OF A MEASURE The measurer and/or umpire should always make a decision when called. A tied end is a decision. Having measured, the measurer should only indicate the shot bowl/s without moving it or any other bowls as the player/s may wish to call an umpire for confirmation. The umpire s decision being final. If the player/s is not wanting to call the umpire, the measurer should then turn out the shot bowl(s) telling the players the decision. If two bowls are equidistant from the jack, both bowls should be turned out together. Advise the players verbally of the decision e.g. 1 Shot to red or Tied shot. No score. Having turned out the shot bowl(s) nothing else in the head should be moved by the measurer or umpire as this may lead to confusion amongst spectators and players as to the outcome of the measure.
