Major Singles Generously sponsored by Bev and John Archer The quarter finals were completed on the weekend. Results: 1 John Archer 31 Don Yeates 24 2 Henry Hua 31 Michael Ryan 29 3 Paul Leverett 31 Gary Havron 29 4 Garry McKeough 31 Terry Rae 23 All very close matches. Russell reports: the three games played Sunday were absolutely enthralling. The spectators were full of praise for the precision, consistency and closeness of all the matches. Worth the ticket price to watch.

2 Pennants Teams The winning streak continues! For three consecutive weeks, all three grades have won. After 8 rounds, Grade 3 is 5 th in their Section, Grade 5 is leading in an unreachable position, and Grade 6 is sitting third, only a few points from the lead. Talk of free drinks for participants in such rare occurrences has only been on the wrong side of the bar. What s coming up? Round 5 of the Major Singles Semi Finals 1 Henry Hua V John Archer 2 Paul Leverett V Garry McKeough Match 1 will be played this Friday, 20 May at Match 2 will be played Sunday 22 May, cards to be called at The final is to be played by the weekend of 25/26 June. This is to allow for various other events including Major Pairs, Pennant finals etc. Plenty of notice will be given for the benefit of spectators. Major Pairs The entry form is still on the notice board so grab a partner and sign up. Entries close 20 May for a start on 29 May. 3 Russell s Elimination Game. Equipment required: 2 marker disks or half tennis balls. (Any jack target that will not be displaced when struck by a bowl will do). Four bowls for a 2 player game or 3 bowls for a 3 player game. 1. Scoring: Any bowl that is within 2 mat lengths of the jack scores 1 pt. 2. Elimination: All bowls that are more than 2 mat lengths short of jack are eliminated from the game until the commencement of the next set. All other bowls remain in play for the next end. (A toucher into the ditch or a bowl out of bounds is deemed dead and eliminated) 3. Each set will consist of 6 ends (or until there is only one player who has bowls in play). The game is made up of three sets. 4. Toss a coin to determine who opens the bowling for each new set. Whoever wins an end bowls first on the next end. 5. Winner will be the player with the most points at the conclusion of the match (i.e., after the 3 rd set). (You could play a tie-breaker game to determine an outright winner.) NB you are trying to build up the head with draw bowls without useless short bowls blocking your team s access to the head. This is the purpose of the game. Game Set up: Place a 'jack target' on the "T" at both ends of the rink for the entire drill. The mat is moved up and down to create the required short, medium and long lengths to be played. The set play sequence will be: 1st end short 2nd end - medium 3rd end - long 4th end - short etc. If you have not been bowling for long, then you may want to be a little more flexible with your scoring criteria. Don't set yourself up for failure. Make the scoring criteria easier (eg any bowl within 3 mats of Jack could score. As you improve, make the criteria for scoring, tighter. Even if you are practising with a more skilful partner in this drill, you can still be competitive. Adopt a "golf like handicap" scoring system. E.g. the more skilful player scores within a mat of jack whilst the less skilful player scores within 2-3 mat lengths of jack, etc. If you want to roll up on your own, you can still do this as an elimination bowls drill. See how many ends you can play before all your bowls are eliminated (remember to vary the lengths you play).
