If you wish to nominate for any of the committee positions, please contact the Club Secretary, William Wallace for a nomination form. Congratulations ACT Men s Fours Championship Men s Club Fours Championship This year s Men s Club Fours was played over the weekend of 12 th, 13 th September. Five teams took to the Greens in fine form. The final came down to the teams of L. Stuart, M. Brookman, J. McDonald, and B. Howard against D. Kimber, G. Freebody, M. Dulihanty, and G. Pickup. Breeze s team lead in the early stages and looked as if they might be able to go all the way. But they hadn t banked on a couple of excellent deliveries by Greg Pickup halfway through which saw his team take the lead and hold on until the end to take out this year s title. Well done everyone and good luck in the CoCC in November. Mixed Winter Pennants ACT Men s Fours finalists M. Brookman, J. McDonald, C. Pike, B. Howard Canberra N. Savino, E. Elijas, D. Morgan, S. Marquet- QRSLM Canberra took out the ACT Men s Fours for It has been a long time since our Club has had this level of success in the men s ranks, the Women achieved their equivalent in The team of C. Pike, M. Brookman, J. McDonald, and B. Howard took out the coveted title on Sunday 20 th September at our Club. They defeated a team from QRSL in the Final. Well done guys. The Canberra White team in the Mixed Winter Pennants won through to the Grand Final, which was played at the Weston Creek Bowling Club on Monday 14 th September. Unfortunately the Canberra team went down to

2 the Belconnen team by 2 points overall. Thank you to all the members who represented our Club over the season, especially the members who stepped in when regular team players were either sick, away, or unable to play for personal reasons. It is this type of team work that makes our Club continue to be a great place to belong. ACT Women s Triples Championship Congratulations to the team of J. Ogle, M. Bannerman, and R. Moxon on making it to the Semi Final in the ACT Women s Triple Championship. These ladies narrowly defeated a City team on the last end after clawing their way back from 8-20 in the Qtr Final, but after leading for most of the Semi, went down by 2 points to the Queanbeyan team Skipped by L. Donney. The competition was won by a Yowani team consisting of E. Riding-Hill, M. Jackson, and N. Blunden. Doran Bowl 2015 J. Paten, P. Willett, J. Lilley, J. Cox, and M. Walsh This year s Doran Bowl was contested at Canberra City Club on Saturday 19 th September. The format was altered this year to allow a team to consist of four players who played two games of 15 ends. Our Club was courageously represented by P. Willett, M. Walsh, J. Paten, and J. Cox. The weather wasn t very nice, although the rain held off until after proceedings had concluded. Our team was hit by sickness and a lack of preparedness due to availability of players and the weather leading up to the day. The ladies conducted themselves marvelously but sadly didn t win on the day. A special thanks to J. Lilley for stepping in to help complete a scratch team made up of ACT juniors. This team rounded out the number of teams entered to enable the tournament to go ahead. Well done ladies. The Bowl was won by Tuggeranong this year, so we hope to get a team together and enter again next year. The Capital Grants submission for the assistance to install the new green has been forwarded to the Government for their consideration fingers crossed.

3 ACT EVENTS Mixed Sports Day snaps Our Sports Day was a great success again this year. It always proves popular with players from other Clubs mainly due to the effort that is put in by members and the friendly and welcoming atmosphere that is part of our club culture. A special thanks to Helen Cody and all the ladies who worked so hard in the preparation and delivery of the lunch, plant prizes, raffle, and the opportunity table.

4 The other big advantage of web based is when you travel. Then you can remain in contact no matter where you are in the world. It also allows you to do the reverse, set up a forwarder in your ISP to your web mail so you get everything in one box. There is also another bonus of cloud storage. This means you can scan copies of your passport, house insurance, land titles,drivers licence, Medicare, wills etc and store this in the cloud that comes with your account. In windows 8 and beyond Microsoft offers free cloud storage for your documents on the address you provide. so does Google mail. For those who worry about getting hacked, then you can further encrypt those documents by third party software before storing them in the cloud. But it offers insurance if travelling overseas and your wallet or passport gets lost or stolen. Any cafe or hotel with a wifi connection can bring digital copies back down onto your device when needed to prove who you are. Computer Tip this month This month is a bit of advice on and the things you can do to make good use of it when travelling. I notice a lot of members who use their ISP (Internet Service Provider) mail address as their contact . While this is perfectly ok, if you want a permanent address it is far better to have a web based address. This way you can chop and change ISP's as much as you like and your address never changes. It also provides great filtering on spam mail which you will get a lot of once your address is exposed to the world. There are also plenty of providers out there you can trust such as Gmail with google or Microsoft live, or hotmail, Yahoo mail etc. Once you create an account with one of these providers you can easily set up a forwarder inside those accounts to forward every to your normal ISP address without anyone knowing it. Also when manually typing in web address into your browser's top text window. (the place where a web address is normally displayed). You don t have to type into that window when manually entering in a web address. Just clear whatever text is in the window by highlighting and delete then type in your address such as "canberra.bowls.com.au, or canberratimes.com.au, as an example and the web page will be displayed. The browser automatically assumes the rest. Greg Bourke Test Your Knowledge Q. A delivered bowl comes to rest on the green and in contact with the jack which is in the ditch. It is claimed, that, as the bowl is a live bowl and is in contact with the jack in the ditch, it is a toucher. Is this correct? A. No. No bowl shall be a toucher by playing onto, or coming in contact with the jack when the jack is in the ditch. Law 24.3.

Jensen On the weekend of 29 th, 30 th August, Bill Stevenson, Greg Bourke, Michael Jensen, Ken Derbyshire, Arthur Wyatt and Warwick Peirce travelled to Eden for a 12 end triples tournament at the Eden Bowling Club. The South Coast had plenty of rain prior to the weekend and at first it looked bleak with more rain to come. However, the clouds dispersed and it turned out to be a fine weekend, although cool and very windy at times. The two teams only managed one win each from their three games played on the Saturday. The tournament organiser s used the results of all 24 teams that took part on the day to grade them into 5 separate pools for a Sunday 3 game competition. Bill, Arthur and Michael were drawn to play in pool D, while Ken, Warwick and Greg were drawn to play in pool C. Bill s team recorded one win from their three games. While Ken s team was more successful with a close win against Merimbula 14-13, a 13 all drawn in their second game against the Eden Girls, and another close win against Bombala 10-9 for the third. The result was enough to win their pool and take home the money. Warwick Peirce

6 Canberra Minor Triples Carnival L. Barton, M. Nelson, M. Bates 3 rd place getters with R. Moxon H. Cody, N. Siaus, G. Young, R. Moxon, M. Sewell The Minor Triples Carnival was in doubt of being held this year. Thanks to the members who formed teams to ensure that this important event continues to appear on the Bowls Calendar. The weather wasn t the best but at least the rain held off. It was a CBC team who took out the prize this year after some very exciting games. N. Siaus, M. Sewell, and G. Young scraped in by a single shot in their last game to hold poll position, ahead of a very close Tuggeranong team who came 2 nd for the second year in a row.
