Bowls Australia recently announced the confirmation of disciplines and each player s respective positions. The players will compete from April 5 to 13. Aaron has enjoyed a rich vein of form in recent times, being voted Australia s International Bowler of the Year. Aaron will also skip the pairs with Australian Vice Captain Brett Wilkie and will try to replicate the World Bowls Championships pair s title they secured in Aaron will be striving to emulate the feats of Rob Parella (1990) and Kelvin Kerkow (2006) to become Australia s third Commonwealth Games men s singles gold medallist. Aaron reacted on being selected by saying I am feeling extremely privileged to be selected for the 2018 Commonwealth Games and being among so many great players in the squad. Now I am looking forward to playing in the Singles & Pairs, leaving no stone unturned, and doing my best for the green and gold. Aaron was not the only local player to be selected. Cabramatta s Karen Murphy, who will be going to her 5 th Commonwealth Games and St Johns Park Kelsey Cottrell. Rebecca Van Asch, who will be playing at St Johns Park in 2018 was also selected along with Cabramatta s Kay Moran who will be representing Scotland. Congratulations to all players on your selection. 2 ZONE CHAMPIONSHIPS The first of the Zone Championships commences this weekend with the State and Reserve Fours Championships with the winner of State Fours progressing onto the State Championships in September. Last year s Zone State Champion team from Cabramatta is the same with this year having Carl Healey as skip with Billy Johnson, Corey Wedlock and Ray Pearse ready to defend their title on home soil. The Runners Up from St Johns Park are back with Josh Berry Mathew Pietersen, Nathan Wise and Ben Twist trying to go one step further. With both teams in a different section, there could be a repeat of last year s final. There are numerous teams, 31, that have entered the Championship, an increase from 24 on last years, which will ensure from the first round that all games will be of the highest quality. Games will be over 3 days starting at 9am on Saturday 3 rd February at Cabramatta BC with the Final on Saturday 10 th February commencing at 10am. The Reserve Fours will be contested at Mount Lewis BC with an increase number of teams also entered this year from last years. With a few byes in the First Round and a wide range of Clubs entering the event, with the winner a deserved champion as the competition will be fierce. The second event is the State and Reserve Triples Championships to be contested at Revesby Workers and Birrong Sports BC with the winner of the State Triples progressing onto the State Championships. Last year s Zone State Champions from Cabramatta in Billy Johnson, Carl Healey and Corey Wedlock have entered again. An increase of teams entered, 40 this year compared to last year s 28, has made the task of a repeat a lot more difficult. Games will be over 3 days starting at 9am on Sunday 11 th February at Revesby Workers BC with the Final on Sunday 18 th February commencing at 1pm. Important note from the draw is 4 afternoon matches that were scheduled for Sunday 11 th at 1pm have been brought forward to the morning time of 9am. The Reserve Triples will again be contested at Birrong Sports BC over 3 days commencing on Sunday 11 th February culminating on the final being held on Sunday 18 th February at 10am. Last year s champions from Cabramatta, Kevin Shanahan, Troy McGregor and Adrian Vidaic are defending their victory from last year. Good luck to all the players that have entered both events. A full wrap of the both events will be in the February issue of In The Zone. The Zone Match Committee will post the results of the day s play on Facebook, Zone website and Zone App after the day s play and will provide updated scores during the later stages of both events. ENTRIES OPEN FOR THE BIGGEST EVENT IN AUSTRALIA The countdown is on to the world s richest bowls event. Entry registration for the Australian Open, the World s Biggest Bowls Festival, can be obtained from the Bowls Australia website. Entries close on 15 April The event will be contested on the Gold Coast from 9-22 June Bowlers can enter any one of the open disciplines on offer (singles, pairs and fours) or enter age-specific U/18, Over-60s or Bowlers with a Disability event. For further information on the event, please go to the Bowls Australia website and clink on the above photo. 2
3 BANKSTOWN SPORTS BOWLS - PLANS FOR THE FUTURE In late 2017, Bankstown Sports Bowls decided to take on a bold plan about their immediate future so as to encourage bowlers to come back to the club. The trigger for this came from Bankstown Sports Club s undertaking of major renovations to their two greens. With no major renovations undertaken for over 10 years, the redevelopment of the two greens was an enormous task with Green 1 s grass completely removed and new grass planted as shown below. Bowls Committee member Glenn Hellyer commented Our greenkeepers have done a wonderful job in bringing back our number 2 green and the playing surface has impressed both members and visitors. We are looking forward to the return of our number 1 green in early April. The members are excited to see the hard work being put into our greens and cannot wait to play on both greens in the future. Another initiative that the new Bowls Committee will be undertaking in 2018/19 will be a huge membership drive to obtain new members whether it will be for social or Pennants. The first of these events will be the Legacy Barefoot Bowls day on Anzac Day. Beginning at 9am, the day will include the Anzac Service at 11am, lunch and a great opportunity to learn about and play the great game of lawn bowls. Bankstown Sports Bowls will be holding tournaments later this year with entry forms on the Zone website. Merv Cook Graded Triples (Grade 4-7) Sunday 29 July Bernie Green Graded Triples (Grade 4-7) Sunday 26 August John Murray Graded Triples (Grade 4-7) Sunday 23 September Renovations underway on Green 1 LIDCOMBE HOSTS ANNUAL SCOTLAND V AUSTRALIA As part of their Australia Day celebrations, Lidcombe BC held their traditional Scotland v Australia challenge on Saturday 27 th January. With the event always being held on the Saturday closest to Australia Day and Burns Night, the game is followed by the traditional Burns Night supper of haggis, neeps and tatties with a Scottish bagpiper. The competition started in 1994 with Australia winning the challenge in each of the first eight years before Scotland finally managed a win in This was the 25 th meeting and Australia won (5 rinks to 1) although Scotland still leads overall. 3
4 THE ACRES INAUGURAL HANDICAP PAIRS Greenacre Bowls at the Acres club ran its inaugural Australia Day Weekend Handicapped Pairs this year with a satisfactory entry of 10 teams for each of the qualifying sessions on Friday 26 th & Saturday 27 th January. Teams played 4 games of 9 ends with the top 6 teams from each session progressing to the finals on Sunday 28 th January. Friday session was evenly balanced with no team winning all its games. Saturday was a fiercely competed session with final qualification spots going down to the very last bowl in two games with one composite team missing out by just 1 shot. The final on Sunday was played over 3 games of 10 ends with some high quality play, as was to be expected given the calibre of the teams, of the 30 games played over the finals 28 were decided by less than 5 shots and three teams finished undefeated on the day. The winners were M. Vassallo / J.Warnes (Composite) with 3W+14, C. Tindall / P. York St. John s Park 3W+ 8 and P. Goodyer / D. Farr Ashfield 3W+5. The players and Committee would like to extend their thanks to the greenkeeper for the excellent standard of the green over all 3 days, the staff and management of the Acres club and all teams that entered without the support of bowlers tournaments cannot succeed, we hope to make this an annual event so watch out for the 2019 flyer. 5 BULLANTS SECURE VICTORY AT INAUGURAL NSW 5 A SIDE Cabramatta have secure the inaugural Bowls NSW 5 a side tournament with a come from behind victory against the locals, Warilla. Twenty clubs entered the $30,000 event played over four days at the picturesque Warilla BC. With the Commonwealth Games squads in attendance, this event a was fantastic warm up for both the Men s and Women s squads. The format was Singles / Fours then Pairs / Triples. After three days of play in a round robin format, Cabramatta finished second on the ladder behind Warilla with Engadine and Belrose taking up the other semi-final places. Cabramatta played Engadine in the semi-final and won both the Pairs and Triples to take a 12nshot margin into the Singles and Fours. With the Fours close, Engadine conceded the Singles at 19 all and the Bullants won 3-1 (61-51). With Warilla easily winning the other semi against Belrose, the final was set for a cracking contest. And the spectators, both at the venue and on live feed, were not disappointed. Cabramatta Triples team of Ben McCall, Billy Johnson and Corey Wedlock led 9-0 early and finished on top Warilla were always in front in the Pairs but the whole final was turned on its head with Cabramatta s Ray Pearse and Carl Healey scoring a maximum 6 on the last end to only go down After a short break, State team mates Aaron Teys and Ray Pearse battled out the Singles with Teys winning the contest Warilla were leading the Fours 15-6 with 4 ends to play and with one hand on the $15,000 first prize cheque. Then dramatically the Bullants Fours team scored 13 shots over the next 3 ends (4, 5 and 4) to lead and lead the overall contest. A single on the last end to the Bullants secured the title. ZONE 12 PLAYERS MAKE STATE SQUAD Zone 12 was represented by 7 players at the annual NSW v ACT 3 test series that was contested in late January at Tuggeranong BC. Mathew Pietersen, Chris Herden, Ben Twist, Ray Pearse, and Carl Healey were joined by two debutants in Cabramatta Aaron Wilson and Corey Wedlock. Congratulations to Aaron and Corey. The First Test was a close contest until the second half when David Ferguson s rink and then Ben Twist s rink skipped away to convincing 26-8 and 21-8 victories to offset Aaron Wilson s rink loss and a victory to NSW. The Second Test was a dominating performance from NSW. On the back of Ben Twist s 35-8 rink win, the other two rinks were also victorious to lead NSW to an victory. With the series locked up, the Blues found the men from the capital determine to save some pride in the last test. This was the case as all 3 rinks had fantastic battles and it was only over the last 15 ends to the Blues take full control and win the test 70-46, 3 rinks to nil. It was a great series for the Blues as the U/25 s and Women s sides also won their respective test series. After the success in the ACT, the same teams were selected for the test series against Queensland this 3 test series will be held on February at Raymond Terrace BC. U/25 QUAD SERIES The U/25 Quadrangular Series was the first representative fixture of the year for Zone 12. This was the fought out in mid-january at Taren Point BC against Zone 13, Zone 10, Zone 16 and Zone 5. The selectors had a difficult task of putting together a side, as a few players were unavailable for the event. The team selected was Zac Corr-Johnson; Jess Hogan Beau Prideaux (Cabramatta), Ben Glasson (Mt Lewis) and Josh Lord; Mark Roppola; Luke Grainger and Ethan Mills (St Johns Park). With the format being Pairs, Triples and Fours, the overall result of each game decided the winner. Unfortunately, the team started with a loss against Zone 13 (2/4) but bounced back in the next game against the strong Zone 16 side with a great 4/2 win. After a bye, the team again showed their skills against Zone 10 with a comfortable 5/1 victory. Going into the last game against Zone 5, a victory would see the shield in the hands of Zone 12. Despite their tremendous efforts, the team were defeated 4/2 and finished 3 rd in the event. Zone 12 would like to thank the players for their attendance and Corey Hedges (St Johns Park) for filling in at the 11 th hour. JUNIOR METRO SQUAD SERIES Congratulations on the following players who have been selected to represent Zone 12 at the Junior Metro Squad series to plat at Taren Point BC on Sunday 25 th February against Zone 13, Zone 5, Zone 10 and Zone 16.
