Lawn bowlers take a look at Hakoah s White City MORE than 50 members of Double Bay Bowling Club last week visited the White City site which the Hakoah Club proposes to develop into a social and sporting complex. They were told by Hakoah officials, including its president, Phil Filler, that the proposed merger between Hakoah and Double Bay Bowling Club is a major factor in the project to provide a complete social and sporting venue at White City. Double Bay members visited White City during four sessions, two on Thursday, December 9 and two on Friday, December 10. In each two-hour session, club members were taken through the whole White City site and were shown various locations where bowling greens and a club house could be built. They were told that Hakoah does not envisage a casino type club, but is committed to establishing a social club with most popular sporting facilities. Hakoah representatives were questioned about under which name the new club would function, as well as other issues which concern the bowling club membership. However, most club members said they were impressed with the overall proposal for the site and the bowling club s involvement through a merger, despite the fact that almost all details have yet to be discussed at top management level. 3 Regular Double Bay visitor sparks NSW Open Triples DAFNA Orbach, the sensation of the recent NSW Women s Open Lawn Bowls championship at Wagga, is a regular player in Double Bay s Wednesday Triples competition. She hit the sporting headlines when she skipped an all-unknown team into the final of the triples tournament. Although Dafna plays out of the North Sydney Women s Bowling Club, she has been a regular visitor at Double Bay for a number of years and is a frequent competitor in NSW Maccabi Bowls Guild events staged at Double Bay. In the Wednesday triples she plays with two other visitors James Godfrey (North Sydney) and John Dwyer (Coogee). Her flamboyant, colourful approach to the game attracted media attention when she made her debut in the NSW Open triples with novice bowler, Di McBryde (Turramurra WBC) as the lead and the experienced Vicki Bartrop from Lindfield WBC as the second. But the run ended in the final against Australian squad members Anne Johns and Lynsey Armitage, with St Johns Maryann Parcell upfront. One press report suggested that Dafna Orbach is quite possibly the greatest showwoman the Bowls Australia grand prix circuit has ever seen. Dafna Orbach s next challenge is at international level when she represents Australia against visiting lawn bowls teams in the Maccabi Australia International Games (MAIGS) at the Double Bay Club from December 26. 4 Christmas and contribution to charity at Women s Club party Club chairman, John Rosen, and Women s Club president, Margo Michael (right), present a $6500 cheque to Rebecca Havas, of the Sydney Children s Hospital Foundation. DOUBLE BAY Bowling Club continued its support for children s cancer research when a $6500 cheque was presented to the Sydney Children s Hospital Foundation during the Women s Bowling Club s 2010 Christmas party on Tuesday, December 7. This brings the club s donations to the Children s Hospital in the past seven years to almost $40,000. The money is raised by the men s and women s clubs through organised events and programs. More than $3000 of the cheque was raised by the women s club at its recent combined Friends and Charity Day, while the men s club s contribution is raised by its Wrong Bias Box and the Century Club, which has a regular participation of more than 60 members. In addition the registered club board annually adds a contribution. Club chairman, John Rosen and Women s Club president, Margo Michael, presented the $6500 cheque to the Foundation s Fundraising Manager, Rebecca Havas, during the Xmas luncheon-party in the clubhouse attended by almost 70 members and organised by social chairperson, Lea Portrate and her committee. 5 Red Riding Hood production highlights Xmas frivolity REPORT BY IRIS KAMPEL PARTY games games, organised by Jenny Welton, set the mood for everyone to enjoy the Double Bay Productions Unlimited s wacky adaptation of Roald Dahl s spoof, Little Miss Red Riding Hood and the Big Bad Wolf, with Pam Stein narrating the scenes at the Women s Club luncheon-cum-xmas party. Members involved included Devorah Lees, as the eco-friendly forest, Barbara Shur was the forever yoga-stretched grandma, Iris Kampel had the role of the big bad wolf in mink, and Pat Bryant played the ever-youthful pistol packing blonde, Little Red Riding Hood. The unanimous verdict was that the production was worthy of an Oscar nomination! 6 Division 3 has the 2010 Summer Shield A CLEAN-sweep of all three rinks gave Double Bay s Division 3 team the 2010 Summer Shield at the Western Suburbs Leagues Club on Saturday, December 11. Double Bay defeated Bronte by 38 shots to finish on top of the Zone 11 Round Robin playoff and take home the medals. The club s lower graded members competed in the Division 3 competition where selectors rotated players from week-to-week in a bid to give as much playing to time to each one. Against Bronte the pairing of Terence Joffe and Cedric Amoils won 18-13, Harold Lewis, Eddie Fingret and Jack Rosen won their triples rink and the fours combination of Coen Williams, Peter Solomon, Ken Shapiro and David Ossher scored a win for a total shot aggregate The club s Division 1 and Division 2 teams finished in the middle of their competitions. Handicap Singles slowed by weather and other commitments THREE players have qualified for the quarter-finals of the 2010 Handicap Singles, but it is unlikely if the event can be completed before the end of the year. Recent bad weather and players commitment to the club s Summer Shield competition has delayed many of the early round games in the event which attracted a full field of more than 40 entries. One of the quarter-finalists is defending champion, Jack Kampel, playing off minus three, who scored a win over Les Brem (+2) to continue his way up the board. Also in the last eight are consistent singles players, Mark Sack and Pepe Glick. Sack (+5) upset Harry Black (-1) while Glick (-1) had too much experience against recent newcomer to Double Bay, Jonathan Norris (+9). In a second round clash Len Sandler (+5) knocked out Mark Reisin (+7) In the 2010 Mixed pairs, Karen Levinson and Mark Sack, have won their way into the semi-final with a tie-break win over Barbara Shur and Leon Portrate, who lost the first set 17-2, but came back to take the second 13-3 only to go out on the tie-break ends. The husband and wife team of Audrey and Gerald Weinberg also needed a third set tie-breaker to account for another family combination in Margo and Phil Michael 14-2, 6-13, 2-0. The Weinbergs now come up against Barbara Shotland and Pepe Glick, who overcame the challenge of Flora Cohen and Clive Wolff in straight sets. Kampel in Maccabi Australian open singles semi-finals DOUBLE BAY S 2010 Major Singles champion, Jack Kampel, has won the NSW division of the first Australian-wide Maccabi Open Singles tournament. He defeated North Sydney Bowling Club s 28-year-old, Jayman Lewis, in straight sets 8-7, 8-4, on Sunday at Double Bay. He now competes in the semifinals against the interstate winners from Victoria, Western Australia, and South Australia at the Double Bay Club on Friday, December 24. The tournament is unique in that it is open to men and women. All four semi-finalists are expected to represent Australia in the Maccabi Australia International Games (MAIGS) Lawn Bowls tournament over the Xmas-New Year holiday period.
