Black switches to a Forest Green for bench paint job Harry Black is all smiles as he puts a second coat of high gloss paint on one of the 42 bowling club seats IT S doubtful if members know how many seats are placed around the club s three greens, but if they did want to find out, they only have to ask Harry Black. As a member of the licensed club s board of directors, Harry has taken on the responsibility of looking after the amenities around the greens and this includes the care and maintenance of the 42 seats strategically placed around the greens. In recent months, the club has received a number of quotes to replace the current seating, but the cost was way outside the budget. So, Harry decided to give the seats the once-over. He found that the structures are secure and the timber planks in reasonable condition, with most only needing a coat of paint to freshen up the appearance. For the past month, Harry has spent two days a week preparing the woodwork for two coats of high gloss Forest Green paint. Members, who have complained that their white/cream trousers have been stained by the previous acrylic paint, are assured that high gloss will not cause the same problem. 2

Drawn(out) Pairs final(ly) decided! IT all started way back in November when the first round of the 2008 Drawn Pairs Championship was played. On the 5 th day of April, 2009 the event was finally decided when the evenly-graded pair of Bernie Garden and Solly Shuster overcame the challenge of Max Klein and Brandon Conway in the final Klein, graded in the club s No 5 team and Conway, a No. 1 pennant regular, proved to be a formidable combination going down in the decider on the last end when they gave Garden and Shuster, who play Grade 2 pennants, three shots. Until then Conway s experience was vital in the early part of the encounter. By the 8 th end he had the score in his side s favour at When Klein and Conway had the 11 th end score at 14-4, they hit a brick wall as Garden and Shuster found their line and length to win the following six ends to square the match at 14-all. On the 19 th end Klein-Conway added four shots to have what looked like a matchwinning lead on 19-14, but Garden-Shuster got the four shots back on the next end to trail and continued the run by collecting three shots on the 21 st end for the match and championship For Garden it was his first club title at Double Bay. He had finished runner-up to John Wineberg in the 2007 Minor Singles, while Shuster, a recent arrival at Double Bay, is showing his ability by winning his way into the 2009 Major Singles semi-final. Annual holidays and other commitments caused the delay of the final. Although the club has a play or forfeit policy for championship events, organisers are loath to award a walkover for a final. 4 Anzac Day also a reminder for peace and harmony ANZAC DAY should remind us to use every effort for the promotion of peace, love and harmony throughout the world, chairman John Rosen told more than 40 members at the club s ceremony on Saturday, April 25. At this time of the year it is the custom to remember the servicemen and women who gave their lives in the service of this country. Today we again pay tribute to their memory, he said. The Last Post was sounded as the Australian Flag was lowered to half-mast and Rosen recited the Ode to the Fallen. Members observed a Minute s Silence (pictured left) before Reveille sounded and the flag returned to the mast-head. Assisting in the ceremony were Past Chairman, Leon Portrate and club manager, Graham Armstrong. A special guest was club patron, Jack Jarman (pictured right) Pictures by Carole Brickman and Eddie Fingret Keeping the singles record straight WE ALWAYS like to keep the record straight, so that in years to come the club s history can be easily compiled. This goes, not only for what is reported in this magazine, but also for the weekly news and results which are downloaded on the club s website under the heading Hot Off The Press as well as those published by the local newspaper, The Spectator. The Hot Off the Press (and Spectator) column of March 31, headlined the marathon match between Jack Kampel and Gerald Weinberg in the 2009 Major Singles quarter-final. In the preamble to the report of the marathon (150 minutes) match (won by Kampel 31-22) it commented that both Kampel and Weinberg are renowned singles players, having between them won, in recent times, at least six Major events at club level. And that is where there is a matter of fact to be amended. The report said Weinberg was last successful in the Major Singles at Double Bay in 2006, was runner up in 2005 and was the champion in 2004, while at the Rose Bay Club he won the title from Kampel in 1999, who was the singles champion in 1997 and In fact Kampel had also won the Rose Bay crown in 1993, 1994, 1995, and was runner-up in 1996 and 1999 (both times to Weinberg) as well as winning the District Singles Championship in 1997 and So that sets the record straight! 4

ON THE GREEN EDITOR: ALMA GOLDMAN Double Bay wins way to Group final DOUBLE Bay Women s Club s No. 3 (1) pennant team has qualified for the Group playoffs in May. This follows the team s win in its section and now comes up against the district winners from St George, Canterbury and Sutherlandshire in a round robin competition at Taren Point on Wednesday, May 13 to Friday, May 15. Audrey Weinberg, Devorah Lees, Jenny Welton and skip Carole Brickman Carole Brickman and Jan Hutchins skipped the two rinks for the team which took out section honours. Brickman s side was Audrey Weinberg, Devorah Lees and Jenny Welton, while Hutchins had Gail Black, Barbara Shur and Florrie Cohen. The club s No. 3 (2) combination performed well and for many of the team it was their first experience of the pressure which comes with playing twice-a-week in a tough, very competitive six-week competition. Gail Black, Barbara Shur, Florrie Cohen and skip Jan Hutchins Finals at Coffs Harbour The winner of the Group playoff will qualify for the State finals at Coffs Harbour on July Last year Double Bay s No 2 team won the group and competed in the State final at Tamworth. 5

Know-how plays major factor in Singles Final EXPERIENCE, as much as anything, paved the way for Barbara Shotland to regain the club s Major Singles crown, which she last won in 2007, when she clashed with up-and-coming Mary Newin in this year s final on Thursday, April 16. Although Barbara Shotland was not last year s champion (the title went to Jan Hutchins with Pam Stein the runner-up) she won the Eastern Suburbs District Singles Championship and went on to play in the State finals experience that money can t buy, while Mary Newin, in comparison, is a rookie in the experience department. So, the scene for the 2009 championship round was set between an odds on favourite and a long shot challenger Mary Newin, who had tasted the tension of a club final when she took out the 2007 Minor Singles event. Heavy rain early in the week did not put a "damper" on the final, thanks to groundsman, Rob Fetherston, who had the green running at an even pace, plus there was a mild breeze to keep the players comfortable. Mary Newin started strongly and took an early lead, but Barbara kept in touch and the score seesawed for several ends with only one or two shots separating the pair. Both players were in top form and were producing excellent bowling. ON THE GREEN After almost two hours Barbara applied the pressure and pulled away, but Mary clawed her way back to narrow the margin to two shots with some excellent saving draw shots. At the three-hour mark the game was locked at 21-all with the championship up for grabs. Now experience played its part and Barbara showed her skill in reading a change in the speed of the green and the effects of a slightly freshening breeze. She gradually got to lead 25-21, but once again Mary fought back to bring the margin to When the match reached the three-and-a-half hour mark, Barbara scored a three to rake the title 31 to Story by Iris Kampel with Mike Golland Barbara Shotland (left) and Mary Newin

DOUBLE BAY WOMEN DOMINATE DISTRICT PAIRS EVENT Third time for Iris and Jules JULIETTE (Jules) Friedlander and Iris Kampel won their third District Pairs title when they defeated club mates Sonia Davis and Jan Hutchins at Double Bay on Friday, April 24. They now chase a spot in the State Finals when they clash in the Group playoff against St George Canterbury on May 28, with the winner meeting Sutherlandshire to qualify for the last 16 in the State. Double Bay women continued to dominated the District Pairs event. This year the club had nine entries with seven teams making the second round where Karen Levinson and Marie Thatcher won on their last bowl on the last end against their Matraville opposition. In the quarter finals, Lily Brick and Pat Bryant beat fellow members Mary Newin and Sandra Ballard by one shot on an extra end and the game between Sonia Davis and Jan Hutchins playing Barbara Shotland and Lorraine McLaughlin went down to the wire with Sonia and Jan finishing strongly over the last ends. Jules Friedlander and Iris Kampel had a ding-dong battle against a Matraville pair, but finally held on to win by two shots. ON THE GREEN In the semi-finals, played at Coogee, Jan and Sonia proved too solid for Lily and Pat taking the honours 27-14, while Iris and Jules battled until they picked up a five at the mid way stage which seemed to give them the "tonic" needed and despite some wonderful counter attacks by both Marie and Karen, the "old firm" produced some long lost magic and ran out winners The early part of the final saw Jan and Sonia favouring shortish ends and edging ahead by a couple of shots. After gaining the mat, Iris rolled a full length jack and the momentum of the match changed. Keeping this ditch-to-ditch length Jules and Iris combined well to edge ahead. With the green slowing down and the wind picking up it was difficult to be consistent and all four players found it frustrating to control the weight and fight the swirling breeze. Despite the conditions Jules and Iris played some good conversions to wrap up the match and take the District crown, which last year was worn by Double Bay s Rayna Rosenberg and Jenny Welton. 7 Iris Kampel (left) and Juliette Friedlander after their win in the 2009 District Pairs championship

Harry Stein (left) receives the Bernie Garden Recognition Trophy from the Award s donor at the recent Maccabi NSW annual meeting. Harry Stein s award for many years of service ONE of Double Bay Bowling Club s long-time officials has been honoured for his dedicated service to another lawn bowling club. Harry Stein was awarded the Bernie Garden Recognition Award at Maccabi NSW Lawn Bowls Guild s recent 38 th annual meeting. Stein has served Maccabi s lawn bowls administration for 19 years including six terms as Maccabi NSW Lawn Bowls Guild president. He was re-elected unopposed at the meeting for his seventh presidential term, having served previously from 1998 to All but two of the Maccabi leadership are Double Bay members. They are Louis Platus (vice-president), Sam Abrahams (secretary), Bernie Garden (bowls secretary), Sid Glick, Fred Ginsberg, John Wineberg and Les Lilian (committee). Diamond Bay s Phil Jaffe is the executive treasurer and Rod Silber, of the Lindfield Bowling Club, is a member of the committee. Stein has a long serving record in lawn bowls administration. Prior to the merger with Double Bay, he was Rose Bay Bowling Club s vicepresident and a director on the board of management. He was elected Double Bay Men s Bowling Club bowls secretary at the first annual meeting after the 2000 merger with Rose Bay. He held the position until last year when he did not seek re-election. FOOTNOTE: Rod Davies is now the Double Bay men s bowls secretary, 8

Woollahra Council concept to improve Kiaora Road parking IT is unlikely that there will be any additional parking space in Kiaora Road, despite a recent Woollahra Council-sponsored public meeting to discuss the problem. The meeting with Council officers on Wednesday, April 1, was attended by representatives from Double Bay Bowling Club and residents/owners of properties with a frontage to Kiaora Road. Since September, 2007, Woollahra Council has been developing a streetscape plan to address parking and traffic issues in Kiaora Road, Double Bay. At the meeting a detailed design for Kiaora Road from Forest Road to Clarence Place was displayed and met with general approval of the meeting. A club spokesperson told Bay Watch that one of the main concerns expressed at the meeting was that space on the eastern side of Kiaora Road is taken up by longterm parking by boat trailers, caravans, motor homes and other long-load vehicles. Currently, council has no authority to have these vehicles removed as they are registered by the Roads and Traffic Authority. However, the Concept Street Plan displayed at the meeting calls for parking bays with a restriction on the length of a vehicle. The club official said that taking all points into consideration there is little hope that there will more parking space along Kiaora Road, but what will be available will be well marked asphalt, concrete or grass parking sites, including restricted disabled parking bays. The areas at the rear of the proposed parking bays are to be landscaped, according to the concept design displayed at the meeting. The club official said that the meeting was constructive and only one complaint about the parking of bowling club members cars was voiced. A caravan parked under the trees along Kiaora Road 9 One of the many boat trailers which park along Kiaora Road for long periods Council will now put the plan before its various sub-committees for approval or otherwise.

THE possibility of Double Bay championship pairs teams competing at the Sydney 2009 World Masters Games, is being talked about by top echelon members of the bowls club executive. Club champs in Sydney 2009 Masters Games? THE bowls competition of the Sydney World Masters Games will be staged at the Birrong Club from Saturday, October 10 to Sunday, October 18. Double Bay Bowling Club committee members have received a five-page information guide about the event and have discussed the likelihood of sponsoring the winners of the club s 2009 Major Pairs into the tournament. Some officials are keen for the club to sponsor the 2009 men s pairs title-holders, as well as this year s women s pairs champions and possibly the 2008 mixed pairs winners. The World Masters Games is planning three pairs events for lawn bowls in three age categories. The men s pairs, women s pairs and mixed pairs will have divisions for competitors aged from 35 years to 44, 45 years to 59 and 60 years and over. In each case the age of the youngest player will determine the age category of the pair. All players must be financial members of a bowling club affiliated with a National Association which is a member of World Bowls. Entry fee per competitor has been set at $220, which includes an allocated seat at the Opening Ceremony, entry to the Closing Ceremony and other events, including the Games Health and Lifestyle Expo. Each competitor at the 2009 World Masters Games will receive a Certificate of Participation. Depending on the number of team entries, organisers may announce additional venues for the events. Double Bay s 2009 Major Pairs Championship should be decided well before the launch of the World Master Games. First round matches were set for late April with the final expected to be played in early July. The current Double Bay pairs champions are Les Lilian and James Cook, who defeated Brian Ginsberg and Pepe Glick in the final, but with Cook now aligned with Bondi Bowling Club, Lilian will defend the title with Harold Jankelowitz. The women s club s Major Pairs title-holders are Jenny Welton and Karen Levinson, while the 2008 Mixed Pairs crown was won last month by Iris and Jack Kampel. 10 Pepe Glick (left) and Brian Ginsberg the 2008 Pairs finalists.

Weinberg s knack for club titles GERALD Weinberg, the club s chairman of selectors, obviously has the knack of picking a team when it comes to club championship events. His record at Double Bay includes no less than three fours championships, three triples and two pairs titles. WINNING SELECTION; Bernie Garden, Peter Levy, Jonathan Chapman and Gerald Weinberg. Garden, Jonathan Chapman and Peter Levy. They had wins over teams skipped by Jack Kampel and Walter Jacobs on their way to the final against Barrie Brickman s unit of Sam Abrahams, David Ossher and Rob Hutchins. And it was the Brickman outfit which looked the goods in this year s final as it skipped away to a 6-1 lead after the first six ends. Then the tide turned for Weinberg s side which added 10 shots on the next seven ends to take a one shot advantage at on the 13 th end. That was the last time Brickman s challenge was a worry to Weinberg, as his selection reeled off five of the remaining eight ends for 10 shots to stand at on the 19 th end, while Brickman finished on a high with two shots on each of the 20 th and 21 st ends to bring the tally to MAJOR FOURS FINAL Jonathan Chapman, Bernie Garden, Peter Levy, Gerald Weinberg 21 defeated Sam Abrahams, David Ossher, Rob Hutchins, Barrie Brickman 15 Plus, there s been more than a couple of times in which his chosen selection collected a runners-up prize. And not once did he have the same team, although Les Ferguson (six times) and Peter Levy (five) featured in the most championship sides. Other s to have been in Gerald s line-ups include Walter Jacobs (three events), Doug King (twice), Pepe Glick (twice), while Sid Glick, David Carroll, Abe Cohen and Harry Stein have all tasted a championship win with Gerald Weinberg. For this year s Major Fours event Gerald elected to go with Bernie RUNNERS UP: Sam Abrahams, David Ossher, Barrie Brickman and Rob Hutchins 11

SO what has the recent blackouts got to do with an item in this column? Just ask a few of our pennant players who live in the Double Bay, Rose Bay, and Vaucluse areas what happened when Energy Australia s power failed on Saturday, April 4 and they couldn t operate the garage doors. Those who were playing at Double Bay were on the phone trying to get a lift to the club, while those who were playing away had double trouble, because the majority had their bowls in the boot of their cars. For them it was a frantic couple of hours checking with other team members in a bid to borrow a couple of bowls for the match. Overall the results were not too bad, considering some of our guys used unfamiliar running bowls. MARCH was a pretty important month for club stalwarts, Jack and Iris Kampel. On Sunday, March 5, they won the 2008 Mixed Pairs championship and two weeks later, on March 29, they celebrated 50 years as champions of the Matrimonial Stakes. Congratulations! DID YOU HEAR the story about the man who had two of the best tickets for last year s Rugby League Grand Final. As he takes his seat at the stadium, another man comes along and asks if anyone is sitting in the seat next to him. "No", he says, "the seat is empty.""this is incredible!" said the man, "who in their right mind would have a seat like this for the Grand Final, the biggest sporting event of the year, and not use it?" He says, "Well, actually, the seat belongs to me. My wife was supposed to come with me, but she passed away. This is the first Final we haven't been together since we got married." "Oh... I'm sorry to hear that. That's terrible. but couldn't you have found someone else, a friend or relative or even a neighbour to take the seat?" The man shook his head..."no. They're all at the funeral." THIS FELLOW'S wife was constantly nagging him to teach her how to play lawn bowls. Finally, one morning, he relented and off they went to the club for a rollup. "Now, watch me and do the same thing, he says. He rolls down the almost perfect bowl finishing two centimetres from the jack. The wife steps up to the mat and rolls the bowl down the green on the wrong bias with such force it crosses onto the next rink, hits a another bowl coming the other way and then crosses back to the original rink, hits another bowl and finishes up as a resting toucher beating the husband s bowl. The husband looks at the chaos she has caused and says, "Okay, now you know how to play, let's go home. 12
