First-past-the-post to win Midweek Shield DOUBLE Bay won the 2007 Zone 11 A1-grade Midweek Pennant Shield for the fourth consecutive year, following its 4-1 (88-60 shots) win over nearest rival, Coogee, in the last match of a six-round competition. With only seven A-grade teams competing this year, the Midweek Shield was decided by first-past-the-post, in contrast to previous years when section play-offs were required. Last year Double Bay s A1 side, after taking out its section, defeated Matraville Bowling Club by seven shots in the play-off final. In 2005 the team also accounted for Matraville (by 12 shots), while in 2004 it had a 15-shot margin against Coogee. This year, The A1s won five of its six games for a tally of 22½ points, with Coogee finishing with four wins and 21 points, with Matraville third on 18½ points. The seventeam competition gave each team a bye. Players who represented the club in the A1 team included Harry Black, Pepe Glick, Jack Kampel, Bernie Garden, Bernard Fridman, Gerald Weinberg, John Wineberg, Les Lilian, James Cook, Julian Engelman and Alan Rosenberg. The club s A2 team won three of its matches, including the last round by 4-1 (83-60) against South Coogee, to end with 14 points, equal with Kensington in fourth ranking. In B-grade the B1 side had to be content with second spot after scoring a 3-2 (73-66) win over Eastlakes, to collect 20 points from four wins from six games, five behind Greenlees Park at the top. The club s B2 side, which had the bye in the last round, took third place with four wins for 16 points. The C-grade competition, which had only five teams, finished with Burwood Diggers on 14 points, two more than Double Bay s C1 side, with the C1 team battling on five points at the tail of the table. Another five of the players who represented the club in the winning A1 Midweek team (from l-r) Bernie Garden, Bernard Fridman, John Wineberg, Julian Engelman and Alan Rosenberg. 3 Members at the General Meeting in the club house on Sunday, August 19 MORE PICTURES PAGE 11 Meeting selects how the selectors will be selected IN a near-unanimous decision at a General Meeting on Sunday, August 19, members approved a motion to change the procedure which appoints the Men s Bowling Club selectors. Only two votes were recorded against the motion, moved by Fred Ginsberg (pictured) and seconded by Les Lilian, which called for an alteration to the club s constitution so that the selectors are determined by a vote of financial members of the Men s Bowling Club; the selection panel consist of five (5) members, one of whom shall be the chairman; at least two selectors represent the lower grade of pennant sides and the first meeting of selectors will appoint, from the panel, a member to act as chairman. Forty six members attended the meeting which took a little more than an hour to make the changes, following comments by the proposers and supporters of the motion. Ginsberg said that apart from the other implications involved in the changes, it will mean that near everything within the men s club committee responsibilities would be voted upon by the membership. Chairman, John Rosen, urged the membership to consider the motion, which was motivated by a certain amount of ill-feeling within the club s selection procedures. The move was supported by Men s Bowling Club president, Rob Hutchins, but former club chairman, Leon Portrate, was unhappy with the wording of the motions, which will become part of a legal constitution. Current chairman of selectors, Werner Kos, said the main issue is that the membership be given the opportunity to vote who sits on the selection panel. Details how the other suggestions contained in the changes can be worked out, he said. Some members suggested that there would be a problem in having selectors for the lower grades. Does this mean that they will not be involved with the other grades and vice-versa? Another concern, which came from treasurer Barry Isenberg, was that the wording about the lower grade selectors was ambiguous in that it should read shall be playing in the lower grades instead of shall represent the lower grades. Speakers on the motion included Jack Stern, Wayne Podger, Eddie Cohen Snr, Peter Gow, Harry Jacobs, Pepe Glick, Phil Gordon Jnr, David Ossher, James Cook and John Michelin. 3

FOURS FINALISTS: (left) Ray and Harold Jankelowitz (insets) Harry Black and Sol Shuster. TRIPLES FINALISTS: (above) Bernard Fridman, Alan Treisman and Jack Kampel. Teams make Zone triples and fours finals TWO Double Bay teams battled their way into the finals of Zone 11 State events last month, but found the combinations from Alexandria-Erskineville too capable on the day. Both the triples and fours combinations from Double Bay fell at the final hurdle to the teams led by the talented Ray Pearse, who collected the Zone s Grand Slam in taking out the singles, pairs, triples and fours titles. Although playing on home turf the Double Bay triples unit of Alan Treisman, Bernard Fridman and Jack Kampel were completely outplayed by a blend of experience and youth in the shape of Peter Davies, the veteran of the side at 40-something, 18-year-old Aaron Tobey and Ray Pearse, who, although in his early 20s, is considered one of the Zone s outstanding prospects. They cruised past the Double Bay trio to take the title in only 22 of the designated 25 ends. In the fours final the Double Bay challenge came from Harry Black, newcomer and ex-south African Sol Shuster, Harold and Ray Jankelowitz, but they couldn t contain the accuracy of Pearse and cohorts Aaron Tobey, Gary Pearson and Dean Smith, going down In the triples semi-final Kampel s side scraped through with a last end collect of three shots against another Alexandria-Erskineville challenge from Darren Hardy, Jay Law and Nathan Henke. The Jankelowitz-led fours team was in top form in its semi-final sailing past the Bronte team of S Wilson, B McCall, R. MacDonald and David Carder. After a slow start, during which they were 0-6 behind, they went on to overwhelm the opposition to the tune of Shapiro and Engelman challenge for State Senior Pairs title Double Bay s Ken Shapiro (pictured) and Julian Engelman will represent Zone 11 in the ClearView-sponsored State Senior Pairs on September 12 at Roselands BC, where they will clash in the first round with Zone 10 s Malcolm Campbell and John Farr, from Northmead. Shapiro and substitute Alan Rosenberg (for the flu-victim Engelman) won the Zone 11 final from the Coogee pair of W. Vaughan and Bruce Nottage. It was Shapiro s first open competitive match as the skip. 4

Get to know the rules says club s top umpire EVERY lawn bowler should have a working knowledge of the Laws of the Game, Paul Isenberg, (pictured) told Bay Watch this week. However, this does not mean that when a situation arises that requires an interpretation of a point law, an umpire or a qualified member of the controlling body should not be consulted, he said. Isenberg is Double Bay Men s Club Convenor of Umpires and was commenting on Gerald Weinberg s letter in the August issue of Bay Watch, which revealed (among other revelations) that his team had been disqualified as runner-up in the club s 2007 Major Fours Championship because of a breach of the substitution rule. My advise to our members is that every time there is a reason to invoke one of the Laws of the Game, such as using a team substitute, the approval or otherwise of a responsible official is sought before starting a game, Isenberg said. Weinberg s team was disqualified from the 2007 Major Fours Championship after the final because the constituted player, who was substituted for that match, was in attendance at the club for some time while the match was being contested. Under Law 19, the constituted player should have been made to take his place in the team and play (the remaining ends). Isenberg s accurate knowledge of the Laws of the Game was highlighted in Weinberg s letter about the club s 2006 Major Fours event when his team was found guilty of playing an illegal substitute in a successful second round match. It was Isenberg who alerted Weinberg that he had breached the substitute law because he had substituted a player who was not a member of the club at the time of the draw for a competition. The match committee ruled that the match should be declared null and void and ordered it to be replayed. Weinberg s original team lost the replay. Isenberg said that generally speaking laws and regulations are open to interpretation, but in lawn bowls the rules which concern the every-day bowler are mostly clear cut. Every member should have a general understanding of the laws of the game under which they play social and competitive games. Copies of the new Laws of the Game are available from the bar at $3 each, he added. Our umpires at Grade 1 State Pennant games PAUL Isenberg led a four-man team of Double Bay umpires to officiate at the 2007 BCiB State Grade 1 Pennant Championship at Alexandria-Erskineville on August 4 and 5. Isenberg, Leon Portrate, Rob Hutchins and Sam Abrahams, volunteered to officiate at the event following a request from Alexandria- Erskineville officials. 6 Jack Jarman retires from the board AFTER almost 25 years on Double Bay Bowling Club s board of management Jack Jarman has decided to call it quits. He revealed his intention in a letter to the board in late July because at 88 years of age he is finding it difficult to fulfil his duties as a director. However, he will remain as the club patron and continue working with the board s finance committee. In his letter of resignation, Jack said it was with regret that after many happy years of being involved with the club management he tendered his resignation. At the same time he expressed his appreciation and congratulations to the chairman and board for the continuing efforts in striving to make the club a better one. May they be successful both on the green and with club development, he said. One of Jack Jarman s last commitments as a member of the Registered club s board of management was to assist the auditor prepare the financial report for the upcoming annual general meeting. He is pictured (above left) with auditor Trevor Wise in the club s office checking financial documents. Chairman s praise for the man who inspired the club management Club chairman, John Rosen, said this week that Jack Jarman had given many years of unselfish and inspirational service to Double Bay Bowling Club. We offer every one s unconditional and sincere thanks to him for his untiring efforts over so many years, Rosen said. His advice and counsel has at all times been well presented and always in the best interests of the club and the membership. We are sorry that Jack feels it is time to take things easier, but we are happy that he has agreed to continue to assist the finance committee and that we will still have his charisma as club patron, he said and added: Thanks, J. J. SEE ALSO PAGE 7 6

Jack Jarman taking it easy watching a game on a recent Saturday afternoon Making way for younger execs EIGHTY-eight-year-old, Jack Jarman, who has announced his retirement from the club s board of management, says his decision will allow younger members to take on executive responsibilities. Jack, who has been a member of Double Bay Bowling Club for 37 years, told Bay Watch last week that at 88 years of age I don t want to take a job away from eager, younger fellows. It was in February, 1970, that Jack joined Double Bay BC and was soon a leading member of the executive. Over 24 years on the board, he served six years as chairman, was treasurer for eight and a board member for another 10 years. Jack s commercial life is etched as part of Sydney history, as he revolutionised the retail liquor industry as documented in the Centenary History of the Liquor Merchants of Australia, published in If it wasn t for Jack s entrepreneurial spirit and tenacity, the whole liquor trade might still be in the dim old days of the 1960s when it was against the law to sell beer or wines by the single bottle. Much of Jack s involvement in the liquor trade was detailed in the Bay Watch issue of March The two-page article also highlighted his lawn bowls prowess, recording that he has won a major singles title (1991) and was runner-up four times, has won the major pairs no less than eight times (and was a finalist on eight other occasions), was a member of the winning major triples team for eight years and just missed for a ninth title, appeared in seven major fours finals, winning the crown twice, has won a handicap singles event, two mixed pairs and three mixed fours. It is no wonder that in 1993 the No. 3 green was named The Jack Jarman Green to honour his longstanding and excellent list of achievements in the boardroom and on the playing field. And in 2003 Jack was again honoured when his fellow executives asked him to take on the responsibility of Club Patron a post he intends to retain, while he also has offered to continue assisting the finance committee for as long as is required. Fred joins the board FRED Ginsberg (right) has been co-opted as a director of the Double Bay (Registered) Bowling Club, following the retirement of Jack Jarman from the board. Ginsberg s appointment was revealed by board chairman, John Rosen, last week. Ginsberg will sit on the board until the upcoming 65 th annual general meeting when it is expected he will be nominated to retain the post. At last year s annual meeting Ginsberg failed to gain election to the board as one of three deputy chairmen. He and sitting deputy chairman, Paul Isenberg, were the two unsuccessful candidates of the five deputy chair nominees. 7

One win and a draw for Grade 2 in State pennant finals Great effort DOUBLE BAY S Grade 2 side, representing Zone 11, to make finished second in its section of the State BCiB 2007 Pennant Finals contested at Gymea Bowling Club on the finals the weekend of August 4-5. Drawn in Section 4, the team on the Saturday got off to a good start with a solid win over Zone 8 championship club, North Albury. Then it found the all-round talent of EBP Sports (Zone 12) too good, going down On Sunday, Double Bay needed a solid win over Zone 4 representation from Forbes, but had to settle for a tie on 66- shots, to end its pennant hopes on three points and nil shot aggregate to EBP Sports four points plus 22. The final tally was, played three games, won one, tied one and lost one for three points. TEAM: Harry Black, Les Lilian, Jack Kampel, Gerald Weinberg; Alan Treisman, Michael Beaumont, Harold Jankelowitz, Ray Jankelowitz; John Wineberg, Pepe Glick, Bernard Fridman, James Cook. Reserve: Jonathan Moses. 8 In his report manager, Barrie Brickman (pictured), said that the team should be congratulated for a great effort in making the State play-offs. He said the Jankelowitz-led team played extremely well in both Saturday games, as did the James Cook rink where John Wineberg had an outstanding tournament. However, the team, skipped by Gerald Weinberg was very disappointing on the Saturday when it lost both matches by big margins, but to their credit fought back on the Sunday morning for a solid win. Brickman said it is his opinion that attention in the coming 12 months needs to be focussed on looking amongst members who have potential to play in the higher grades with special emphasis on reassessing the skips positions. Zone president s thoughts on Midweek comp. LETTER Whilst in attendance at the recent final of the Zones State Triples event at Double Bay BC I read your club s Newsletter (Vol..4 No 8 July-August, 2007) particularly the article on the Midweek Triples event. The entries to this [year s] competition was a great disappointment in the lack of entries from other clubs in the Zone. I must say that without the support by your club over the years, maybe this event would not have continued as it has. Your Club has always supported all Zone events, in addition to the sponsorship of The 2007 Triples event which is greatly appreciated by the Zone. However, I must make note of two matters in the article on the Midweek Triples. With two sides having a bye on the same day, it involves a maximum of 20 players not 37 and that Zone 13 is also a participating Zone in this competition in addition to those already involved. The future of this event will be the subject of consideration when discussing next year s Programme of Events and with the other Zones that are currently involved. If the Zone could get some constructive alternatives to this competition, or a means to make it more attractive, we would be grateful of any input. Herb Bradman President, Zone 11

Shot that killed Grade 3 s chance for a State pennant PHOTO BY EDDIE FINGRET GETTING READY FOR STATE GAMES: Members of Double Bay s Zone 11 Grade 3 team pictured on arrival at The Entrance BC for the BCiB State Pennant Finals, with manager, Peter Goldman (arrowed) with Harry Stein, David Carroll, Sid Glick, John Rosen, Peter Levy, and Phil Gordon Jnr. Over-confidence is to blame OVER-confidence and a period of distraction during the Sunday morning game, rather than the opposition s bowling ability, probably cost the Grade 3 team its hope of winning the State BCiB Pennant at The Entrance on the weekend of August 4-5. This is the opinion of several team members and a similar comment was included in the report to the bowls committee by team manager, Peter Goldman. It is difficult to fathom how we missed by one shot to qualify for the semi-final when, after two of the three sectional round-robin games, we were standing on four points and a huge plus 39 shot margin, one player, who asked not to be identified, told Bay Watch. This followed Saturday s results of a win over Tuncurry (Zone 6) and a sensational massacre of Huskisson (Zone 7). All we had to do was to concentrate that we didn t drop too many shots on the Sunday morning against North Sydney (Zone 9) which, up to that stage, had not collected a point from its two games. Somewhere along the line we lost it by one shot, the team member said. CONTINUED NEXT PAGE 9

Fetherston told Bay Watch last week that he expects the green to be brought in before the start of the 2008 pennant season in March.. Hopefully we ll be playing on it by mid-february, but there are so many variables with weather conditions that it is hard to predict accurately, he said. The chaff will be purchased from Tifeagle s sole Australian distributor in Queensland, The Tifeagle will land on the green in October GREENKEEPER, Rob Fetherston (pictured), has set Wednesday, October 17, as the day he will seed the Jack Jarman green to restore it to a grass surface. He will spread chaff of the Tifeagle grass variety over the surface which has been laying fallow since early August, when the green s synthetic carpet was pulled up and work was carried out to prepare the area for its return to grass which should guarantee a pure strain of the grass. We will order a sufficient quantity to cover the Jack Jarman green and returf the grass bank surrounds in a bid to avoid crosscontamination of the grass from the other greens, Fetherston said. Tifeagle grass is now one of the most popular strains used in America, particularly on golf course greens. Locally, St Johns Park has a Tifeagle green. Grade 3 s disappointment at Pennant finals FROM PREVIOUS PAGE On the Sunday Double Bay made a solid start and on nine ends was ahead 19-0 when the wheels fell off as one rink dropped 26 shots in 11 ends, putting added pressure on Double Bay s other two rinks. Whilst this was being monitored by opposition managers, North Sydney was being encouraged not only by its own supporters, but by those from Tuncurry, which was battling to win against Huskisson. The end result was that North Sydney turned the tables on Double Bay to the tune of 69-56, while Tuncurry scraped into the semi-final against Section 4 winners Bathurst (Zone 5) by one shot with a victory against Huskisson, to give it four points and a plus 27 shot margin against Double Bay s four points plus 26. Against North Sydney the Jonathon Chapman, David Carroll, Les Ferguson and Werner Kos rink lost by three shots, Bernie Garden, Harry Stein, Eddie Fingret and Phil Gordon Jnr side went down by six shots and the Sid Glick, John Rosen, Ivor Cohen and Peter Levy unit dropped four shots. Goldman said he was very happy with the commitment and attitude of most of the bowlers who played above themselves and gave a 100% effort. He was pleased to see the way they supported our players on adjoining rinks. He thanked reserves Paul Brandon and Daniel Hoenig for their help, but was critical that the team had only five supporters at the games, whereas opposition teams had bus loads, no matter from where they came it may have made a difference; we all know you play better in front of a crowd, Goldman added. Tuncurry went on to make the final with a semi-final win over Bathurst City (Zone 5) to clash with Zone 4 champions, Narromine, for the Pennant Flag, but went down by three shots

THEY SUPPORTED CHANGE TO SELECTION PROCEDURE Pictured here is a selection of members who spoke during the General Meeting on Sunday, August 19, which approved a constitutional change for the appointment of the Men s Club selection panel. Seconder of the motion to change the selection format, Les Lilian (left) and men s club president Rob Hutchins, (right), who supported the proposal. WEDNESDAY INTRA-CLUB RESULTS Kampels top of the Blues HUSBAND and wife, Iris and Jack Kampel, with Bernard Fridman, took out the Winter (Blue Division) Wednesday Intra-Club twobowl triples competition by a two point margin (14 pts + 75 shots) over the trio of Mike Golland, John Wineberg and Les Lilian (12 pts + 47) just ahead of the Audrey Weinberg, Abe Cohen, Gerald Weinberg team on 12 points + 45 shots. James Cook s team moves up JAMES Cook, with Peter Goldman and Paul Brandon, topped the Orange Division by one point over the Rod Davies, Les Ferguson and Eddie Fingret team, which scraped in on a better shot aggregate from third-placed Harry Stein, John Rosen and Alan Rosenberg. Current chairman of selectors, Werner Kos (left) and registered club chairman, John Rosen. Pepe Glick (left) and Jack Stern (right) Eddie Cohen Snr leads the way EDDIE Cohen Snr teamed with Alf Wall and Harry Scott to take the Red Division honours by a point from Ces Albert s unit of Sam Ginges and Brian Grill, with the Jack Stern, Monte Lewis and Ted Jackson combination in third place. Monday honours to Fingret s team THE Monday Winter competition went to the strong threesome of John Wineberg, Leon Portrate and Eddie Fingret, but only on a significant plus 31-short margin from Gerry Cardash, Alf Wall and Spike Meyerson, with Peter Solomon, Harry Black and Danny Cohen taking third place. 11

PHOTO BY BERNIE GARDEN THE picture below (right) was snapped by our president, Rob Hutchins, during a recent visit to Raymond Terrace Bowling Club. It clearly shows the outdoor synthetic green completely covered by an expensive roofing construction which provides a near-perfect all weather protection. It is no secret that our board would have considered such a project for our synthetic green, had it been confident that the carpet would have been re-laid to everyone s satisfaction IF YOU RE wondering why there is no picture from the Grade 2 team s efforts in the State pennant finals at Gymea, just phone James Cook for an answer. James took the pictures on his new mobile phone camera, but had a malfunction when he downloaded the images onto his computer for ing to Bay Watch. OUR Grade-3 team which contested the State pennant finals at The Entrance would have appreciated a little more spectator support, but they did have the moral backing of the club s (unofficial) mascot, Manny the Monkey, which team member, Bernie Garden, was thoughtful enough to take with him. Along with manager, Peter Goldman, and reserve players, Daniel Hoenig and Paul (Boof) Brandon, the mascot was part of the smallest cheer squad of the 16 competing teams, but attracted the most attention when Paul hoisted it on his shoulders and paraded around The Entrance Bowling Club, as evidenced by the picture at left. FORMER member, John Lennox (Rob Hutchins brother-in-law) who now plays at Mosman BC, has an eye for a good picture and took the one (right) during a mixed triples match at his club. It is not often there are three resting touchers and despite the fact that two were from the one team, the umpire (rightly) declared it a tied end! In case you are wondering -- John s bowl wasn t one of them! 12
