DOUBLE BAY WATCH A REGULAR NEWSLETTER OF THE DOUBLE BAY MEN S BOWLING CLUB Vol. 4 No. 12, -November - December, 2007 EDITOR: MIKE GOLLAND BRANDON CONWAY OUT-DRAWS SHERRIFF IN SINGLES SHOWDOWN Double Bay s Major Singles champion, Brandon Conway (right), congratulated by Aron Sherriff after their match in the State Champion of Club Singles Champions. STORY PAGE 2 TO ALL MEMBERS A Merry Christmas and a Happy and Healthy New Year

Brandon Conway s ditch-to-ditch play ditches favourite in top singles match BRANDON Conway, literally outdrew the high profile star Australian representative, Aron Sherriff, when he won the first round match in the State Champion of Zone Singles Champions at Rosehill Bowling Club on Monday, November 5. Conway, Double Bay s 2007 Major Singles title-holder and Zone 11 s Champion of Club Singles Champions was given the daunting task of playing the 21-year-old Sherriff, who is being touted as one of Australia s most promising lawn bowlers of international standard. Sherriff, who has gained national television popularity with his patriotic yellow hair colouring, is a member of the current NSW State Fours championship team, was in the side which finished runner up in the State Triples and played the coveted singles role for Australia at the World Bowls Championship in January. He qualified for the State Champions of Club Singles Champions, by taking the Major Singles at his Halekulani Club and going on to winning the Zone 15 Champions event. His current form at zone, state and international level meant that he carried the favourite s tag into the NSW Champion of Champions event. With almost 600 bowling clubs in NSW, to reach the State Finals is a major achievement in itself and Brandon was not over-awed by the prospect of playing such a well-qualified opponent. He played his natural draw game to cause a major upset with a win.. It was the most exhilarating result in the lawn bowls record of the ex-south African, who settled in Sydney from Johannesburg in In South Africa he won the Killarney Bowling Club Major Singles in His first Sydney club was the (now defunct) Rose Bay BC where he was Major Singles runner-up to Jack Kampel in 1997, while at Double Bay he won the 2006 (Division 1) Handicap Singles from James Cook. Against Sherriff, Brandon s draw play was brilliant in windy wet conditions as he played his opponent ditch-to-ditch. One club member who saw the match told Bay Watch: He played Aron ditch-to-ditch and on the day, you would not have been surprised if one said that Brandon was the one who plays for Australia. His old fashion bowls held their line better in the wind. A number of times Aron had full drives to try to extricate himself from his unfavourable position, which only showed how well Brandon was drawing to the head. The final seven-shot margin held by Brandon was a true indication of the play, he said. In the second round against Joshua Andriska, the singles champion of Dubbo Railway BC and the Zone 4 title-holder, Conway was obviously mentally and physically fatigued from the Sherriff encounter, but kept in touch early until mid-game when Andriska got a break to take the result at FOOTNOTE: Brandon s performance has done much to put Double Bay and Zone 11 on the State lawn bowls map. He received congratulations from one-and-all after the Sherriff encounter and Zone 11 selectors reacted immediately by naming him in the team which defeated Nepean District on Sunday, November 18, at Penrith Bowling Club, where he joined Double Bay s Les Lilian, Bernard Fridman, Pepe Glick and James Cook in the line-up. Gerald Weinberg withdrew from the side on medical advice. Ken Shapiro, Sid Glick and John Wineberg featured in the Development Team, but Michael Beaumont was a late withdrawal from that squad. 2

MY MAT YOUR TITLE Pepe Glick (right) congratulates James Cook after their Handicap Singles final Cook breaks singles duck with close victory in Handicap final JAMES Cook, the club s administration officer, chalked up his first club singles crown when he accounted for Pepe Glick in the Handicap final by one shot on Sunday, November 11. Cook, who joined Double Bay in April 2005, had previously won a host of major singles and other club s events, including the 1999 NSW State Singles, but until now had to be satisfied with two Major Singles and two Handicap Singles runners-up prizes. With Cook playing off scratch to Glick s + four shots, the match was one of the tightest seen at the club for many-a-day. In near perfect weather conditions, neither contestant would give anything away without a battle. Pepe Glick s record in the Handicap Singles since joining the club from Lindfield in 2004, is near perfect, having won the trophy in 2004 and It took 33 ends before this year s match was decided. Cook hauled back his four-shot handicap deficit by the sixth end when the scoreboard was posted at 6-all. Nonetheless, Glick continued to be ahead until the 20 th end when the score was again all square at It wasn t until the 26 th end that Cook hit the front for the first time at and then added five shots from the 29 th and 30 th ends to hold a three-shot (24-21) margin, only to be back to 24-all on the 32 nd and setting up a last end cliff-hanger, when Cook had the benefit of the best bowl and the title. FOOTNOTE: Cook did team with Karen Levinson to take out the 2006 Mixed Pairs trophy.

IN A bid to retain the number of members competing in the Wednesday One green splits Wednesdays to morning and afternoon play intra-club contest when there is only one of the three greens available, the Men s Bowls Committee has revamped the competition s format. The club boasts an average of 85 players in the Wednesday competition, but this number cannot be accommodated on one green. The solution, devised by the committee, is to stage the competition in two sessions, one from 9.30 am to pm and the second from 1 pm to (latest) 4 pm. To do this, the format for the two-bowl triples is to reduce the ends from 31 to 25 and to place teams on a handicap system in the morning and afternoon divisions. The new setup started on Wednesday, November 21, with 14 teams opting to play in the morning and 12 electing for the afternoon session. Selectors have issued handicaps for every player, which is displayed on the notice board, but the handicaps were not based on current pennant gradings. Each team will play every other team in the section once. The decision to bring in a handicap competition means that the results of the just completed Wednesday competition will be suspended until all three greens are in use, possibly by early March. The promotion and relegation results from the leagues which ended on November 14 (detailed below), will be taken into account when the Wednesday competition returns to normal. Late charge takes Boof s trio to win Wednesday Blue IN the BLUE Division, the trio of Harry Stein, James Cook and Paul ( Boof ) Brandon made a late charge to take out the title with 13 points (+15 shots) from Mike Golland, John Wineberg and Les Lilian, who were challenging for top spot throughout the competition, but faltered in the last round, to finish second with 12 points (+35). Set for relegation were the sides of Ken Shapiro, Les Brem and Harry Stern along with Audrey Weinberg, Abe Cohen and Gerald Weinberg. Rob Fetherston and Danny Cohen teams set for promotion PROMOTION to the Blue Division awaits the two leading teams in the ORANGE Group where Jack Rosen, Leon Portrate and Rob Fetherston took top spot on 18 points and a huge +87 shot margin, while the Clive Wolff, Paul Isenberg and Danny Cohen trio collected 14 points and a record 103 shots advantage. Listed for the Red Division are the teams of Carol Engelman, David Carroll and Julian Engelman as welll as Sam Ginges, Brian Grill and Ces Albert. Points to spare as two top teams move up a division THE two leading teams in the RED Division had a clear points margin in the race for promotion to the Orange League. The Peter Gow, Mauri Gubbay and Jonathan Moses trio collected 17 pts (+92) one point ahead of Ted Jackson, Monte Lewis and Jack Stern on 16pts (+90) which was two points more than the third team.

Eddie Fingret (left) and Rod Davies scan through the album of press cuttings and other memorabilia collected by the late Roy King. 54-year-old album reveals historic early heydays of Double Bay BC STORY NEXT PAGE The letter from Roy McConnell, nephew of late Roy King, which accompanied the album 5

A crowd of 3000 packs Double Bay greens for Australian singles final A SCRAP book of press cuttings and memorabilia dating back to 1953 has been presented to Double Bay Bowling Club. The album arrived by parcel post from Victoria in late October accompanied by a letter from Roy McConnell, who discovered it when going through some of the possessions of his late uncle, Roy King. Mr McConnell said he only recently discovered the album which contained records of the early history of the club and its members. It was the work of his late uncle, Roy King, a former secretary and bowling member of Double Bay Bowling Club. I pass the album to you in the hope it will be of benefit to the club and its current members, Mr McConnell wrote. Club member, Rod Davies, who is considered an authority of recent history of eastern suburbs lawn bowling, was one of the first to examine the album. The album contains some very interesting facts and figures, Rod told Bay Watch and there are several pieces of memorabilia which must be retained as part of the club s history. One of the most astonishing items is pages of press clippings of the Australian Open Singles hosted by Double Bay in July, The late Roy King pictured at the opening of the Double Bay Clubhouse in 1954 The report estimated that the final was watched by a crowd of 3000 spectators, which packed the Double Bay surrounds to overflowing.the item was illustrated by a photograph of the multitude of people straining to watch the final. Another piece of history is the invitation to attend the opening of the Double Bay clubhouse by the NSW Governor, Sir John Northcott, on September 18, The building, including basic fittings cost 27,000 ($54,000) which was partly financed by members taking out debentures bearing interest at the rate of three per cent. There is also a photograph of the Double Bay Bowling Club membership standing to attention during the 1954 Anzac Day ceremony. In 1958 King moved from the eastern suburbs to Manly and became a No. 1 pennant player at the Warringah Bowling Club and gained Metropolitan team representative honours. Restoration and then clubhouse display? THE 54-year-old album of historic documents and memorabilia, which has been presented to Double Bay Bowling Club, will need professional restoration before it can be put on display in the clubhouse. Although it is in reasonable condition, some of the pages have deteriorated and much of the press clippings and other paper material show the signs of aging. The club executive has agreed that the album should be repaired and a recommended restoration expert in Bowral has been contacted for a quote. It is planned that if the album is restored it will be displayed in a glass case within the clubhouse and a new page revealed to view each week. 6

Green grows the grass LOOK INTO THE FUTURE RESTORATION of the Jack Jarman Green from its synthetic carpet surface to grass continued in October with the spreading of Tifeagle grass runners. The main picture above shows the growth of the new playing surface after only four weeks. Head groundsman, Rob Fetherston, said this week that weather conditions had been near perfect for the initial seeding period. Plus there has been many hours spent by the ground staff in watering and weeding the area, which is expected to be ready for a grand opening in late February or early March. The inset is a digital-enhanced picture of how the Jack Jarman Green should look when ready for the 2008 pennant season. Double Bay Bowling Club Proudly Sponsored 7

ON SUNDAY, October 28, the club staged a Friends Day, a promotion aimed at introducing the game of lawn bowls to likely new members. There was a reasonably good turn-out, as evidenced by the photo (below) snapped by Eddie Fingret. And even more pleasing was the fact that seven of the visitors expressed sufficient interest to arrange coaching lessons from James Cook. But we re wondering was James demonstrating his soccer skills of trapping the ball (inset right) or giving a lesson on how to clear the bowls at the end of an end? A SKIP and his team were playing in the Pennant playoffs final. On the last end they were all level 21-21, and the skip had his last bowl to play. As he was lining up for his shot, a funeral procession passed by. The skip put down his bowl, took off his hat, placed it over his chest, and waited for the funeral procession to pass. After it passed, he picked up his bowl and returned to the mat and drew the winning shot. One of his team said, "That was the most touching thing I have ever seen. I can't believe you stopped playing, possibly losing your concentration, to pay your respects. "The skip turned to him and said, "Well, it was the least I could do. We were married for 45 years!" DOUBLE BAY bowler was sitting around the dinner table and casually commented that he and his partners had just won the trips. "Where to?" was the reply from a non-bowling dinner guest. RETURNING from a bowls game, a father was greeted at the door by his four-year-old daughter. "Daddy, who won the bowls game?" she asked. "You or Uncle?" "Your uncle and I don't play bowls to win," he replied. "We just play to have fun." "Okay, Daddy," she said, "who had the most fun?" THE TV weatherman tells you that it is going to be "mostly" or "chances are" So when playing bowls and the skip asks the position, are you entitled to reply: "Nearly two with a 20 percent chance of it being five? 8
