1 MTC Newsletter March 2018 Club Improvements The club recently won a grant to replace the lights on courts 2,3,6 & 7 and add lights to court one Big thanks to John Rheinberger for his efforts in putting together the grant application The new lights are set to be installed in Apr Big summer of Tennis from Logan and Paige Two Merimbula Tennis Juniors Logan Staight and Paige Poso competed at national events during January Logan was in Adelaide at the Foundation Cup playing for the NSW Country team He was undefeated in singles helping NSW take out the title for 2018 Paige meanwhile was in Melbourne park at the Super 10`s event featuring the top 4 Ten year olds from each state In her seven singles matches she won two tied one and lost four She had plenty of great experiences during the event which is played alongside the Australian Open Her favourite was getting to meet the Australian Davis and Fed cup players including Daria Gavrilova A big thankyou goes to the Merimbula Tennis Club for supporting the juniors and providing assistance for them to help fund travel to these prestigious events The local tennis action picks up in February with the Merimbula JDS event on the 25 th featuring juniors from across the South Coast Coach James Poso, Paul j Warren, Logan Stai Logan with his winning trophy and Paige meeting Daria Gavrilova at the Australian Open

2 Club Announcements We were all sad to hear that one of our favourite social players, Jean, lost her husband to a long illness recently Our thoughts and sympathies are with Jean and her family On a lighter note The infamous Virginia celebrated her 82nd birthday this week and was asked by 6 old Zoe how old she was Chris informed Zoe that Virginia was 28 who promptly said that that was not true as her Mum was 35 and she didn't have nearly as many wrinkles as Virginia!!! Sunday 18 th & 25 th March Entries are in the clubhouse for this years events We have changed it up this year with 3 new events 110 Combined Ladies Doubles 110 combined men's doubles Over 45 men's singles Our aim is to encourage more social players to enter the championships Thanks to all who volunteered in the Kitchen, court supervisors and those who helped to set up for the recent JDS event

3 MTC Newsletter COUNTRY WEEK TENNIS FOR LOCAL PLAYERS Players from the Merimbula and Bega area again attended the Victorian Country Week Carnival of Tennis hosted by the Swan Hill Tennis Club The club has 51 permanent pristine grass courts and another 44 especially prepared on the adjoining soccer field curated and prepared by one groundsman There was not a weed or bare patch to be seen on the 95 courts 1200 players took part this year in some 200 teams (120 Ladies and 80 Gents teams) playing 24 grades The Merimbula Bunnies team consisted of Stefan Bertella, Dennis Love, John Gardiner, John Rheinberger and father & son pair of Bob & Paul Warren A loss by three games against Bendigo/Horsham out on court 90 started the week but the Bunnies rebounded in the afternoon with a win against Kyabram by five games Paul & John Gardiner paired for the afternoon match against Camden and recorded two victories Dennis & Stefan paired to gain valuable games for the team and record a 3 game win for the Bunnies Wednesday morning saw a strong south westerly wind making conditions difficult for all the players however Bob & John Rheinberger were able to play well in the conditions and record an 8-6 first match win Paul & John Gardiner followed up with 8-6 & 8-4 sets to give the Bunnies a three set to one and two game victory over Wodonga Thursday s match against West Wyalong was drawn on court 20, right in front of the clubhouse and gave the match some extra atmosphere Bunnies came away with the first three sets and the fourth set was unfinished at 4 games all This final win enabled Merimbula to move into first place going into the semi finals with Bendigo in second, Wodonga third and Dubbo fourth after losing their first four matches All semi finals were scheduled for 4pm and each match allocated two courts John Rheinberger & Bob Warren took on Dubbo s second pairing and played tentative tennis with John dropping all three serves while Bob served well to hold his two servesbut they went down 2-8 Meanwhile Paul Warren & John Gardiner played a very aggressive high level match and skinned their opposition 8-2 to square the match The cross over doubles was no better for John & Bob and they lost 1-8, Paul & John continued their high level of play and won 8-2 however it was not enough to cover the deficit and Dubbo advanced to the finals on Friday morning Victorian Country Week of Tennis is the largest grass court event in the world ; 1200 players taking part, 4700 games played 1728 tennis balls used 1040 lines were marked using 180 litres of line marker The curator Daniel Gardner walked over 100 kms during the event 1000 egg and bacon rolls were eaten by weary morning participants, 500 scotch fillet steaks were consumed

4 MTC Newsletter Local Success at Merimbula JDS Well done to all the Locals who played our JDS in Merimbula Hollie and Luka both took out their age groups Great to see 3 new players to these events Micah, Cooper, Liam and Khai have a crack Also thanks to all parents who helped out court supervising and in the kitchen Money raised $217 will pay for entries to the next tournament AUSTRLIAN NUMBER 1 HEADING TO TOWN Australian number 1 and former World Number 8 wheelchair player is heading to merimbula to play in a TEN15 event devised my coach James Poso Adam will take on some of the top players in the region with the only difference being he gets two bounces they get one I hope it shows how these events make tennis a more inclusive game, it should be really exciting Mark in your calendars Sat April 14 th More details will be announced soon You can follow the Facebook page ten15tennis
