DOUBLE BAY WATCH A REGULAR NEWSLETTER OF THE DOUBLE BAY MEN S BOWLING CLUB Vol. 5 No. 1, January - February 2008 EDITOR: MIKE GOLLAND FIVE TEAMS IN 2008 PENNANTS DOUBLE Bay will field five teams in this year s State Pennants, one less than 2007, with three competing in the combined Zones 11, 12 and 13 competition and two in Zone 11 The club will return to Grade 1 status and will continue to have two teams in Grade 2, but will not be represented in Grade 3. In the Zone 11 competition, which is restricted to the Eastern and Western Suburbs clubs, Double Bay will have one team in Grade 4 and one in Grade 5. Following relegation from Grade 1 in 2005, Double Bay last year had two Grade 2 teams in the combined Zones 11, 12 and 13 pennants. The Grade 2 (1) won its section and then the Zone 11 flag by defeating Alexandria-Erskineville in the one-match final to qualify for promotion back to Grade 1 level. However, the Grade 2 (2) side escaped relegation when it finished fourth of the five teams from Zone 11. The Grade 3 team also headed its section and took Zone 11 top spot by winning a three-team round robin final to become eligible for elevation to Grade 2. Club officials aware that last year s results meant that Double Bay would again have two teams in Grade 2, but none in Grade 3, asked the Zone Match Committee to consider placing one of the Grade 2 teams in the lower grade. Audrey Weinberg held Concern that some of last year s Grade 2 (2) team would be benched for this the winning ticket year s pennants because they can only play in one grade lower (Grade 3) in 2008, (BLUE C26) in the prompted officials to apply to the Royal Match Committee for permission to Women s Club s raffle have their eligibility grades adjusted to Grade 4. for a Triax Bicycle, Pennants are due to start on March 1 and conclude with section playoffs in but husband Gerald June took it for a road In the annual Zone 11 Pre-Pennant competition, Double Bay has six test around the greens. teams. 2 Badges confirm club and players status THE club s A1 team won the 2007 Zone 11 Midweek Shield for the fourth consecutive year and players were rewarded with the 2007 Medal (pictured above). Four Double Bay players, Harry Black, Alan Rosenberg, Jack Kampel and Gerald Weinberg were in the Zone 11 team which qualified for the Alphapharm Senior Inter- Zone Championship matches at Halekulani BC in October, Zone 11 won all but one of the matches to finish second overall to Zone 15. Pictured above (right) is the Royal NSW Bowling Association s medal presented to all Zone 11 team members. Promised kept turns into pairs title win A PROMISE made several months ago led to Double Bay s James Cook and Phil Gordon Jnr (pictured) winning the prestigious Turn-of-the-Year Pairs title on Monday, December 31, at Maroubra BC. When Cook was a last minute withdrawal from the Double Bay team of Harry Black and Phil Gordon entered in an outside triples tournament, he promised to play with them in the 2007 Turn-of-the- Year Carnival. However, when Black was named in the Maccabi NSW team to compete in the Maccabi Lawn Bowls Carnival in Adelaide, Cook and Gordon nominated for the pairs event. They combined to win six games and then the final by defeating the Diamond Bay mixed team of Melissa Greenwood and Steve Cohen But it wasn t all plain sailing for them there was drama when Cook received a phone call during a preliminary round at Bondi BC that his negotiations for a lease on a unit had fallen through and he had only an hour-or-so to inspect and decide on another property. Luckily, Gordon found a substitute to continue the match until Cook returned. In the semi-final. the Gordon-Cook duo scored an impressive win over the Manly Vale team of G. Lewis and C. F. Eng, which had earlier knocked out Double Bay s other highly rated team of Jack Kampel and Gerald Weinberg. THE unexpected death of Chloe Bloch, the darling daughter of member Hylton and Michelle Bloch, and the cherished granddaughter of Len and Shirley Simon, was announced just after the previous Bay Watch issue went to press. There is no need to remind the membership of the circumstances and courage which little Chloe had to experience in her five short years. Suffice to say that each and every one of us was saddened at her passing and record, even at this late stage, our heartfelt condolences to the Bloch and Simon families. -The Editor

I would have liked to have taken my place in the final and was surprised when I was told that the match had been played and won, Les told Bay Watch. Les was on holiday on the Gold Coast when he received a text message that he was now the club drawn pairs champion. It was a real surprise, as I had told organisers that I had made previous holiday arrangements and would not be available for three weeks, he said. However, organisers substituted Ginzberg in the semi-final and again in the final which was decided a few days before Ginzberg was due to finish his holiday. I m disappointed that I didn t have the privilege and honour of playing in a final. It would have been a great experience, Les said. While I m pleased that James won for the team, it is something like a Clayton s victory. Hopefully, there will be more championship finals ahead for me, he added. SEE ALSO PAGE 6 James Cook 3

Alan Rosenberg the nuts and bolts man of lawn bowls future IT is not widely known that Alan Rosenberg, who last year was elected to the prestigious post of Vice President of the Royal NSW Bowling Association, has had more than 30 years experience in hardware. Not the computer associated hardware, but the nuts and bolts kind, because Alan s early commercial life was within the family business, Hancock Hardware, at Randwick, which set the pace for the emergence of the super-market type now taken by Bunnings and others. It was Alan s marketing and promotional ability that propelled him up the company s executive ladder, until the business was sold in 1992 In more recent times Alan has retained the connection with hardware, this time the computerkind, as the managing director of Vertifix, a company specialising in computerised colour printing (including Bay Watch) and print brokering. Sydney-born in 1943, Alan attended Rose Bay Primary and Randwick Boys High schools, where he played most sports, with particular passion for cricket, squash, swimming, rugby and water polo. When only 16 Alan was elected to the committee of the NSW Jewish Amateur Sports Association (JASA) Swimming Club and later took on the responsibility of treasurer of the JASA Cricket Club. In 1961 his administrative and marketing skills were put to the fore when he led the reformation of JASA Squash Club and was named its president. Alan was also heavily involved with the leadership of the roof body of NSW Jewish sport, JASA, which he served as a vice-president, as well as being assistant manager of the NSW team at the 30 th Interstate School boy Alan Rosenberg Carnival in Brisbane ( ) and assistant carnival manager in Sydney, Later when lawn bowls was added to the Maccabi Carnivals at the 38 th event in Melbourne ( ) the need for a Maccabi Lawn Bowls Guild was evident and Alan was among the first to be part of its make-up. He served on its committee for more than a quarter of a century where his input earned him the honour of a Life Membership. In all, Alan represented NSW at 11 Maccabi Interstate Sports Carnivals and in 1981 wore the Australian colours in lawn bowls at the 11 th Maccabiah Games in Israel. In 2003, Alan s work for the Guild deservedly won him the NSW Jewish Board of Deputies Administrator of the Year Award and in 2005 he shared the NSW Maccabi Masters Sportsman of the Year Award (with club-mate Eddie Fingret on the back of their historic win of the inaugural ClearView State Senior Pairs Championship). Alan was appointed as convener for the first Maccabi Australia Inc (MAI) National Lawn Bowls Carnival on the Gold Coast (December, January, 2002). The following year he was convener of the MAI-sanctioned event in Sydney (at the Double Bay Club) and now has a record of being convener for seven national lawn bowls carnivals. 4 Royal vice-president, Alan Rosenberg Alan Rosenberg the bowler

Alan Rosenberg youngest president at 43 years of age FROM PREVIOUS PAGE Alan took up bowls at Dover Heights Bowling Club in 1972 after attending a father and son promotional day and by 1977 was part of the club s administrative panel. It was his marketing foresight which prompted him to initiate the Dover Heights Invitation Triples which, for 22 years, was to become one of the district s most successful tournaments with top bowlers from around the state participating. At Dover Heights he held various executive posts including vicepresident and senior vice-president before becoming the club s youngest president in Again, it was Alan s foresight that consolidation within the eastern suburbs lawn bowls community was vital for the future of the game, which prompted Dover Heights to open negotiations with Rose Bay Bowling Club leading to the merger of the two clubs in However, the problem of lawn bowls clubs fighting to stay viable was still a worry for the Rose Bay executive, of which Alan was a member. He was the obvious choice to become involved in discussions with various clubs in the area (Waverley for one) with a view to amalgamate. Eventually these led in 2000 to the successful marriage with Double Bay, where he has been the deputy chairman ever since. It was as a Double Bay representative on the Zone 11 committee that Alan was elected as Eastern Suburbs District vice-president and after two years became a State Councillor at the Royal NSW Bowling Association, which led to his recent election as its vice-president. He says that one of his greatest pleasures in bowls was when he set up the Touch 24 Committee to raise money for the Spastic Centre. His committee included Australian representative Rex Johnston, Brett Duprez, Cameron Curtis, Wayne Turley and Steve Glasson, The project raised $100,000 over a two-year period and Alan received The Ball and Chain Award from the Spastic Centre. Alan has played for Fund raiser Alan Rosenberg with Cameron Curtis (left) and Rex Johnston many years in the top grade teams of his club. He has been a No. 1 pennant player for more than 20 years. He represented Eastern Suburbs District from 1980 and has represented Zone 11 on more than 30 occasions. The only club event he has not won is the singles, after reaching the final on four occasions, but his name is on the Honour Boards a number of times for pairs, triples and fours achievements He says that there is such a great interest in the game at the moment. Each week more than 600,000 people tune to Channel 2 s lawn bowls program. Also there are many people playing Barefoot Bowls (another of Alan s marketing projects) as part of the enrolment campaign. The responsibility of the vice-president s role at the Royal NSW Bowling Association means that he is under the watchful eyes of 600 NSW lawn bowls clubs and the 64,000-or-so men members. Whether it s hardware or hard work, Alan is the preverbal nuts and bolts man, who can be counted on to press the right keys to success. 5 Alan Rosenberg Dover Heights BC president Ball and Chain Citation Finding new and innovative means for raising funds is an extremely difficult task. Every idea needs a person to champion its cause and every committee needs a leader to convert ideas into action - someone with commitment and integrity who will take responsibility for converting the myriad of tasks into a successful outcome.

LES Ginzberg admitted that he had the luck of the draw when he was teamed with the club s top-rated player, James Cook, in the 2007 Drawn Pairs Championship, but considered himself only an outside chance of figuring in the event s honours list. However, Ginzberg, who has been playing lawn bowls for less than 12 months, displayed his potential and turned in exceptionally good performances as he and Cook scored commanding wins in the first two rounds, then scraped into the semi-final with a one-shot decision. It was at this stage that Ginzberg told club officials that he would be unavailable for a few weeks, as he was committed to a previously arranged holiday booking. So, it was somewhat of a new experience when he returned to Sydney to be congratulated on winning his first club event! In a bid to complete all annual title events before the end of 2007, officials decided that a substitute should play with Cook in the semi-final and, if required, in the final. In the semi-final Paul Brandon helped Cook overcome the challenge of Alan Simmons and Doug King and Max Pazaky substituted for Ginzberg in the final against Harry Jacobs and Sam Brick (pictured right). It what was a surprisingly one-sided encounter as the Pazaky- Cook combination overran Jacobs-Brick When the pairings were drawn, it was obvious that Jacobs and Brick would be in the event for a long wa,y as they are regular team mates within the club. Brick, has a fine record as a skip; he was runner-up in last year s Drawn Pairs (with Eric Weinstein), while Jacobs was lead in Brick s 2007 Major Fours Championship-winning team and they also are a top-rated combination in the club s Wednesday Intraclub competition. The final was virtually decided early, when Cook collected a total of 10 shots on the fifth, sixth and seventh ends to run to a 14-2 lead. By the 11 th end the title was in the bag for Cook as he and Pazaky turned the score-board to By the 18 th end, when Jacobs and Brick gave away a five, the match was declared at 33-5 with Ginzberg about to have his name on the honours board in his initial entry in a club championship event. Cook gets the right mix in pairs final again! SECONDS after he played the last bowl when retaining the 2007 Mixed Pairs title, James Cook turned to his partner, Karen Levinson, and said: We ll make it a hat-trick next year; okay by you? The Cook-Levinson combination dominated the Mixed Pairs final, defeating the highly-proficient husband-and wife combination, Jack and Iris Kampel It was the second consecutive year that Cook and Levinson have captured the crown and Cook was eager to ensure that Levinson would be his partner in the bid to make it three-in-a-row. With most of the mixed pairs entries coming from family combinations, the available nonaffiliated women s club members are hard to find, Cook said. Needless to say Levinson didn t hesitate and quickly agreed that 2008 could make their pairing into triple winners. Just once, early in the final, were Levinson and Cook behind on the scoreboard and only after Jack Kampel had killed three consecutive ends to lead 7-6. From then on it was Cook s and Levinson s match. 6 Drawn Pairs winner s Luck of the draw Karen Levinson and James Cook after their 2007 Mixed Pairs win

Audrey Weinberg and the prize bicycle Whose bike is it? LEADING club official, Gerald Weinberg, is keeping his fingers crossed that wife Audrey will give him the bicycle she won in the Women s Club raffle to replace the one he s had for more than 20 years. In fact, Gerald brought the bike with him when the family came to Australia in 1987 and for many years he exercised by riding around Centennial Park, some times accompanied by Audrey. Following Gerald s by-pass operations, the bike has been unused and stored in the Weinberg garage, while in more recent times Gerald followed medical advice to continue his workouts on a gymnasium bike. Now that I can to return to outdoor cycling, I went to get the bike out of the garage only to find some of the spokes are rust-corroded and need replacement before it is safe to ride. Hopefully, Audrey will let me have the bicycle she won at the club, Gerald told Bay Watch. The Women s Club raffle for the bike, which was part of its annual Charity Day program, was heavily supported by the male membership and raised more than $570.towards the $3500 which will be donated to the Sydney Children s Hospital, Randwick, together with the men s club contribution, yet to be finalised. The Triax bicycle won by Audrey is a men s lightweight aluminium-framed model with 21- gears, compared to the 10 of Gerald s antique bike. Double Bay foursome beat heat for Maccabi gold THE four Double Bay players, Louis Platus, John Wineberg, Harry Black and Les Lilian, who made up the NSW team at the Sixth Australian Maccabi Lawn Bowls Carnival in Adelaide, had to overcome continuous near-40 C heat to win the Fours Gold Medal. The heat was such that Black spent three hours in hospital recovering from heatstroke after a pairs match. The fours team was undefeated throughout the nine-day carnival and took Gold with a six-shot margin over the WA team skipped by Mike Brown. In the pairs Black and Lilian went through to the medal rounds undefeated with their aggregate qualifying for the bronze medal match where they went down to a Victorian pair by six shots. Platus and Wineberg lost only their opening pairs game to the WA duo skipped by leading Perth player, Mike Zusman, but it cost them a spot in the medal play-off. Team manager Les Lilian said he was very proud of the boys. Louis and John were especially outstanding and made skipping very easy indeed. Harry generally bowled consistently, but was suffering from heatstroke over the last three days, he said. 7 Medal presentation by Maccabi Lawn Bowls Carnival manager, Gary Benveniste (centre) to the NSW Fours team Les Lilian, John Wineberg, Harry Black and Louis Platus

MOST OF our members are old enough to remember the early days of radio and then the introduction of television into our homes. It was a time when radio stations and TV channels explained any problem with their broadcasts as a slight technical hitch and that s what Bay Watch is calling the error on page 3 of the previous issue where the headline under the picture of Handicap singles finalists, James Cook and Pepe Glick was nowhere to be seen (above left). But the club s computer program wizard, Les Lilian, who is a professional Technical Writer by profession (amongst other things), solved the problem and the text appeared on our Website version of Bay Watch as indicated. AFTER almost six years Margo Michael has plated her last meal for the popular Margo s Munchies kitchen. Soon after the club s contract caterer moved out some seven years ago, Margo was asked to fill in for a few weeks until the club secured another chef. However, the membership was so partial to Margo s homestyle meals (many of which she did prepare at home!) that she (and hubby Phil) carried on until last month. I enjoy cooking and it gives me Above: The club s appreciation to Margo Michael and her Munchies was applauded when chairman John Rosen made a presentation to her. Margo had to be called from the kitchen to receive the presentation and (right) expressed her thanks with a fond embrace. Footnote: John (and Sandra ) Rosen have been close friends of Margo and Phil Michael since their early teen years. satisfaction when members tell me how much they enjoy their meals, but it was hard work, Margo said. Margo and Phil plan to take things a lot easier. They will be on the bowling green more often and will be able to spend more time watching their sports-talented grandchildren. 8
