2 Page 2 of 10 President s Report Dear JTC members and prospective members Happy new year everyone and welcome to our first JTC newsletter for Firstly, in late November we held our AGM. A number of new and existing members were elected into a range of roles. The new JTC committee is: Peter Terwee President Nick Cram Vice President Gordon Elliott Treasurer Angela Okines Secretary David Horsfall - Club Coach Abby Wigney Junior Officer Gail Cram Social Officer Johanna Crawford Membership Officer Belinda Ross Media Officer Gary Knox - Club Captain Mark Lindbeck Facilities Officer Tony McCosker Sponsorship Officer I am very pleased with the diversity and mix of skills and talents that we have on our latest committee. We have several returning committee members who will help us new members settle into our new roles. Our first few meetings have demonstrated we all have a drive to further improve our facilities and increase the tennis playing options available to our members and the wider community. Late last year we held a dinner where John Talbot the outgoing President was awarded a Lifetime Membership in recognition of 10 years of service as President and 16 years on the committee of the JTC. John s leadership and efforts have significantly contributed to the continual development of the club s facilities, including a new clubhouse and hotshot courts. John and our previous committees have left the club in a healthy financial position and with first rate facilities. My thanks go out to all those who have contributed and made the club what it is today. Next I d like to update you on our grant projects. As you may be aware construction of our three new Hot-Shot courts was completed in October 2018 with the courts being opened by The Honourable John Barilaro, MP. We also received a grant to build two sheltered tables next to the Hot-Shot courts from The Honourable Dr Mike Kelly, AM, MP. There was an amount of grant funds not yet expended so we requested a variation to support us purchasing solar cells, two batteries and 12 led replacement lights for two of our grass courts. The NSW Government, Department of Industry, agreed and we Dr Mike Kelly, Cr Tim Overall, Heather McKay are moving to implement this next phase of the project over the next few weeks please bear with us if there is any disruption to court or clubroom access while the works are completed. I also need to thank Lou Forner for his assistance providing electrical, engineering and design advice, effort and artefacts that form the basis of our future lighting plans. Finally, it is very exciting to be working with such an innovative and energetic club committee. We are formulating plans for future grant proposals, building up our social calendar and looking to increase our tennis playing and coaching options. We ll be drafting a new strategic plan and updating to a modern constitution. Our committee members are all very hard working and sometimes we have more than we can handle. Because of this, I do encourage you and other members to volunteer to help us from time to time. For example we can always use help running social or fund-raising events, maintaining our facilities, and contributing to our improvement projects. Looking forward to an exciting year! The club remains in a sustainable financial position and the general committee s hard work was evident in the successful securing of several NSW and Federal government grants: Gordon Elliott Treasurer - Members will have seen the new defibrillator installed at the main entrance of the clubhouse, - the 2 new sheltered seating units adjacent to the new Hot Shot courts - hopefully these will be useful for parents and players, and - the new hot shots courts, paths and fencing were installed late last calendar year and are proving a very popular addition to the club s offering of tennis options for club members. In the coming months members will see a further project for lighting improvements taking shape which will complete the current grant funding phase. Jackson Roberts Jackson kept the Jerrabomberra Tennis Club flag flying by playing in the U9 Boys tennis tournament held Saturday 27th October in Wyong. Even though he was the youngest in the tournament, after playing 8 matches, Jackson finished 3rd in the singles & won the doubles. It was such a great experience for him & he can t wait for the next tournament. He had to back up & play pennants on Sunday morning back in Canberra. He just loves tennis!! JTC 2018 Club Championship! Congratulations to Pauline Downes & Andrew Warne s winners of the Female & Male Singles of the 2018 JTC Club Championships that was held today! Congratulations also to the runner ups Abbey Wigney & Cameron Dunne.

7 Page 7 of of Autumn Pennant Tennis ACT Dates! The autumn pennant season is underway. Jerrabomberra is represented by 27 players of various standards across 6 teams. Three mixed teams will compete on Thursday nights in men s, women s and mix doubles and three teams will compete on Monday nights in a competition that combines both singles and doubles. Anyone interested in participating in some competition tennis should contact Club Captain Gary Knox on The Walking Clinic Autumn Monday/Tuesday Night Pennant Not only is Harvey Normans Carpet and Flooring Tony McCosker a valued major sponsor of our club (and slightly better than mediocre player), he has also managed to convince Gerry to allow the Jerrabomberra Tennis Club to conduct an all day Sausage Starting Mon 25 / Tues 26 February until Mon 20 / Tues 21 May Sizzle in the car park of his Fyshwick store on his four biggest sales trading days of the year. Each player shall play 2 sets of doubles and 2 sets of mixed doubles. Players must be a financial member of a Tennis ACT affiliated club, with the competition to run on a home and away structure. Supper is now optional and is to be arranged prior to the match by the away and home team. The Walking Clinic Spring Saturday Pennant Starting Saturday 2 March until Saturday 1 June Entries Closed: Friday 8 February - If you would still like to play reserve contact JTC Club Captain! No Play Dates: Saturday 9 March, 20 April & 25 May (Tournaments & Easter) Saturday Pennant will commence at 1pm on Saturday Afternoon. Three players per team with each player to play 1 rubber of singles (best of 2 sets with a super tiebreak) and 2 rubbers of doubles (first to 8 games). Players must be financial members of a Tennis ACT affiliated club e.g. Jerrabomberra Tennis Club and the competition will run on a home and away structure Junior Autumn Pennant ANZ JUNIOR PENNANT Autumn Dates: Sunday 17 March 2019 until Sunday 23 June 2019 Entries Close: Friday 1 March 2019 Three player teams (male, female, or mixed) with each player to play 1 set of singles and 2 sets of doubles. Green dot balls are to be used for the lower divisions. Players must be financial members of a Tennis ACT affiliated club e.g. Jerrabomberra Tennis Club.
