Whilst we had to put up with some very cold weather, the winter did turn the course a vibrant green and allow the greens team the perfect opportunity to continue their work on course improvement and appearance. The golf course has seen significant improvement, particularly the greens which thanks to the new irrigation system and greens mower have brought them to a level previously unattainable. We hope that many of you have had the chance to get out and play during the winter months, there has been good opportunity with the weather being significantly better than it was last year. As well as golf course improvement we have also sought to enhance the experience of our members in other ways. This has included Friday dinners, rugby screenings, major golf championship events and more. Whilst many have taken advantage of these events we do encourage you all to get involved, we would like you to see the club as a place where members are able to relax and socialize whether they are intending on playing golf and using country club facilities or not. 2 Planting & Native Revegetation As part of Owen and the greens teams improvement program, initial works have commenced on a planting program to improve course appearance. The plan is to increase native species and reduce mowing areas. We will be focusing around the 1 st green, 2 nd and 3 rd tees and along State Highway 2 road frontage and then up to the 3 rd hole pond by the road. This will consist of the removal of unwanted trees and the spraying out of unwanted grass, which will then be sown in an NZ native fescue. This fescue will be used as a nurse plant in the naturalized areas to keep weeds suppressed and in which 1000s of native plants will be placed. While the grass and plants are establishing your care if entering these areas would be appreciated. Upcoming Events All Black Screenings We will be showing four of the upcoming Rugby Championship matches involving the All Blacks. These matches will be shown on the projector and there will be $12 meals and drink specials available. Bookings are essential and can be made through the café (07) All Blacks vs Australia kick off 7:35pm - 24 August All Blacks vs Argentina kick off 7:35pm 7 September All Blacks vs South Africa kick off 7:35pm - 14 September All Blacks vs Australia kick off 7:35pm - 19 October Special General Meeting 3 rd September Golf club meeting to seek members to ratify a new constitution of rules. Working Bee The working bee to construct and paint a new fence down the SH2 side of the golf course will be on the 21 st and 22 nd of September. Further details are in this newsletter. Greens Report On the 9 th of July 2013, David Ormsby of the New Zealand Sports Turf Institute visited Fairview and prepared a Golf Management Report. David made some very positive comments about the huge improvements in the greens, for those of you who have got out on the course and played recently I am sure you will agree that they are playing better than ever. The greens, although quicker and more challenging than before, are now a very even surface, which provides greater reward for accurate reading and putting. Twilight & Business House Will resume when daylight saving commences on the 29 th of September so first Business House Wednesday 2 nd October and first twilight Friday 4 th October. Pro-Am We are now taking registration for the upcoming Pro-Am golf tournament on the 6 th and 7 th of December. Please make any enquiries through Nick Wilson in the Golf Shop (07)

3 Fairview Pro-Am We are pleased to announce that the dates of the 2013 Fairview Pro-Am Golf Tournament are Friday 6 and Saturday 7 December. As those who attended last year will attest the event was a lot of fun for all involved and was a great start to this annual event. The Pro-Am was an opportunity for both our members and locals to play alongside a professional with friends or business associates. It served as a great way for us to display the course to those who were unfamiliar with the huge improvements that have occurred. Since the inaugural Pro-Am Fairview has undergone further course improvement, none being more significant than the introduction and completion of stage one and two of the in-ground irrigation system. This system has been extremely beneficial for the tees and greens and as a result has meant that the course is of a much higher playability than was possible last year. We are thankful that we once again have the support of last years principal sponsors Men s Health Trust New Zealand and Generation Homes, who confirmed their commitment almost immediately following last years successful Pro-Am. Without the support of our sponsors an event such as this would not be possible. We encourage our members to get involved this year whether it be as a hole sponsor or just entering a team. Teams are made up of three amateurs and one professional with hole sponsors able to change their amateur members each day. There will be a dinner function on the Friday night with prize giving on both days at the completion of the rounds. Please find a list of the options and pricing below, we encourage all of you to try and get involved and pass the word out to friends in what is sure to be another fantastic tournament. This will be for the purpose of building and painting a new three-rail post and rail fence along SH2. This fence along with the planting program will enhance the look of the course from the road and ensure the improvements from the planting program are able to stand out further. This will be particularly beneficial for the upcoming Pro-Am and summer season and will highlight the continued progression of Fairview. This is an opportunity for you as members to support the club by lending the already very busy greens team a hand. Shane Ward We are pleased to confirm that Shane Ward will soon begin his green keepers apprenticeship. Shane has been a great asset to the Fairview greens team and has been a key part of the vast course improvements. He has come along way since beginning his work at Fairview and we are sure that the skills he will learn during the apprenticeship will put him in great stead for the future. Golf Club Winter Green Fees On the 3rd of September the committee will be having a Special Every Sunday and Monday during General Meeting to adopt a new Constitution of Rules. the winter months Fairview is offering discounted $25 green fees. 5 Property We are pleased to announce that Generation Homes are now selling property direct out of the show home at 18 Turnberry Close in the Fairview Estate subdivision. Having initially started as builders for us, Generation have recognised that there is a good opportunity for them to get behind Fairview and further enhance the way our property is being marketed. Stefan McNeely will be in the show home Wednesday through Sunday 10am-4pm or by appointment. Brian Hainge is still selling Fairview Park for us and he can be found in the Property Office in the clubhouse Thursday through Tuesday 10am-4pm (though you will usually find him there earlier and later) or by appointment. Fairview Estate Management has purchased a brand new Hyundai i-max van, although the van belongs to Fairview Estate Management and will be predominately used by Liza Munro, it will be made available for a variety of uses. Subject to availability and prior arrangement. Pennants teams will be able to use the van for away matches. The van may also be used to drop home a number of people after certain functions. Every Monday and Thursday the van will be going into Katikati town, leaving from outside the Golf Shop at 2:30pm and returning from the war memorial at 3:30pm. We invite our residential Country Club members to take advantage of this and use it as an opportunity to meet friends, fill a script or do their weekly shopping. Nick Wilson will be able to pick up his junior golfers for after school clinics. Any use of or services involving the van will be subject to availability and prior booking and some services may become available depending on demand.

6 Reciprocal Rights Green Fees We are excited and pleased to announce that we have gained a reciprocal rights arrangement with nearby clubs Omanu, Omokoroa, Te Puke, Tauranga and Mount Maunganui. As a Fairview member, effective 1 July 2013, you are now able to play these four courses at the discounted 18 hole green fee rate of $20 by presenting your membership card or number. Prior booking is advised. The above arrangement follows strong canvassing by Nick Wilson with both Bay of Plenty Golf and the participating clubs where we sought to expand their arrangements to include Fairview. We are well aware of the work Nick has put into this over the last year and our special thanks go to him for his success. We hope and trust that you will enjoy being able to take advantage of these arrangements, by playing the five courses at a heavily subsidized rate and/or inviting friends from those clubs to enjoy our own course and facilities. Fairview s admittance to the reciprocal rights arrangements between these clubs is also acknowledgement of the huge improvements we have made as a club, both in our course and facilities, and the reputation we have built following the hosting of local events and our initial Pro-Am tournament. Since this deal was introduced Fairview has experienced a high number of members from those five clubs taking advantage of the discounted Fairview green fees, we encourage our members to do the same and remind you that we also have a reciprocal rights deal with Whangamata so there is plenty of courses for you to choose from. Towards the end of June, Nick Wilson was approached Akarana Golf Club in Auckland. Akarana expressed interest in a reciprocal rights deal with Fairview allowing members $20 green fees at the others club. We are pleased to announce that as at 1 July this deal is in effect and our members are welcome to take advantage of this rate whenever around the Auckland area. This deal is available any weekday and after 2:45pm in the weekends (prior to 2:45pm Akarana reserves the course for members) subject to course availability. Akarana is a great course and offers members with a perfect opportunity to get out for a less expensive game of golf whenever they are in Auckland.
