1 AUXILIARY SERVICES DIVISION UNIVERSITY OF GEORGIA GOLF COURSE Summary of Major Accomplishments Rounds played were up 10.1% for the year at 30,031. All revenue streams showed an increase in Fiscal Year The most notable of those increases came in the golf shop, which was up 13% to $198,211. The golf course started the fiscal year in excellent playing condition and ended in even better condition due to the well-directed efforts of the maintenance staff. The UGA Golf Course had numerous highlights throughout FY 2009, with the biggest occurring on June 3, when University President Michael F. Adams announced the University s commitment to host the 2010 Nationwide Tour Athens Classic at UGA. The Nationwide Tour is operated by the PGA Tour as its talent feeder system and is arguably the third best golf tour in the world (PGA Tour and European Tour preceding it in stature). In the previous four years the tournament had been held at Jennings Mill Country Club in Bogart and was sponsored by the Athens Regional Medical Foundation. The University of Georgia is proud to be the host of the Athens Classic at UGA and especially glad that the tournament will stay in the Athens area, said Dr. Adams. This has been a great event for the community, and we look forward to teeing off next April and raising money for need-based scholarships. The improvements made by the golf course staff since the 2006 renovation will provide one of the best tournament sites that the Nationwide Tour players will see on their schedule. The tournament dates are April 29 - May 2, The University s contract with the PGA Tour calls for the tournament also to be held in 2011 and In the golf shop operational area, the staff worked diligently at providing top-notch customer service. The new G-Pass became available to customers in April and has proven to be a huge success. It allows customers to buy multiple rounds at a significant discount. A large portion of the increase in rounds played was seen in the April - June period and can be attributed to the G-Pass. Pace of play continues to be a main focus of the golf shop staff. The golf course pace of play policy calls for keeping 18-hole rounds to 4 hours and 12 minutes or less. The driving range saw some substantial improvements during FY The driving range roof was repaired and the classroom inside was renovated. New check-in counter fixtures were installed to clean up the appearance of the public area and provide employees and customers with a more efficient workspace. The artificial tee line was extended to the second and third tees. A concrete slab was laid and artificial turf mats were placed on top to help manage the natural turf better. With the new mats, the driving range can now operate at 100% mats only, preserving natural turf when necessary, without closing down. This will be extremely beneficial during wet periods, when natural turf usually experiences excessive damage from normal customer use. Golf cart paths were also installed at the back of the practice tees to allow customers better access to the driving range. D-58

2 Several landscaping projects were completed during FY Three flag poles were installed adjacent to the practice putting green near the clubhouse. The United States, Georgia and PGA of America flags now are being displayed. New brick pavers and shrubbery were installed at the driving range entrance. Extensive work was done on the eighth tee to remove the old lattice work and replace it with new trees and plant material. The area to the right of the practice putting green also was landscaped. A new starter building was built in between the clubhouse and practice putting green. The starter building was connected to the golf course s network via fiber optic cable, and plans have been made for the starter to have a handheld computer linked to the golf shop POS system to keep staff aware of any tee sheet changes that might occur. Checkins, cancellations and tee time additions all will be available to the starter in real time, without manually communicating with the golf shop. This new system should increase efficiency, reduce mistakes and allow the golf shop employees and starters focus to remain on the customer. The University Golf Course maintenance staff successfully overseeded the tees, fairways and green approaches with annual ryegrass in September. This cold weather grass kept the golf course green through winter months when bermudagrass was dormant. The University Course is the only one in the Athens area that overseeded this past winter and, in so doing, created a strong distinction over its competitors. Other maintenance projects included repair of the drainage area to the right of the #8 green, reconstruction of the steps to the left of the #8 green that lead to the ninth tee, and golf cart path replacements at the #3 tee, #14 green, #17 tee and #18 green. The path work at #3 also included a new path that takes customers closer to the tee. Summary of FY 2010 Goals Successfully host the Athens Classic at UGA Nationwide Tour golf tournament. The tournament will be held April 29-May 2, The University s contract with the PGA Tour is over a three-year period. Upgrade and beautify the front entrance to the golf course. This project will include a combination of stone walls and wood rail fences on both sides of the front entrance road to attract more attention to the golf course. New signage will be attached to both of the stone walls, making the entryway clearly identifiable to drivers traveling in either direction on Riverbend Road. New landscaping and irrigation also will be installed around the walls and fence work. Renovate the golf shop walls and fixtures in an effort to maximize and improve display space, creating a better experience for customers. D-59

3 Purchase a new POS System to increase golf shop employee efficiency, create better inventory controls and create an online tee sheet for customer convenience. Plans call for new POS hardware to be purchased at the same time. Install an awning/cover at the patio next to the scoreboard. This will provide much needed shade for customers and groups. Acquire a few key pieces of equipment, including a skid steer, four-wheel drive tractor, fairway aerifier and greens aerifier. D-60
