1 AUXILIARY SERVICES DIVISION UNIVERSITY OF GEORGIA GOLF COURSE Summary of Major Accomplishments The University of Georgia Golf Course underwent an extensive golf course renovation during Fiscal Year Love Golf Design of Sea Island, Georgia was the project manager and Greens Construction of Tifton, Georgia was the contractor. The renovation began May 4, 2006 at the driving range when a new short game practice area was constructed. Two new Bermuda grass greens and a bunker were installed. This practice area was grassed and opened on September 1, The golf course closed May 15, 2006 and reopened December 1, Major golf course construction projects included redesigning and rebuilding all golf putting greens and bunkers, adding nine forward and 11 championship tees and renovating fairways at holes 4, 5, 7 and 9. Roughly two-thirds of the existing cart paths were resurfaced during the renovation. The cart paths on holes 4, 7, 12, 14 and 15 were relocated to take them further out of play and to improve the aesthetics of the golf course. In November and December, all interior trees on the golf course were limbed up. This was done to improve air flow around the greens and to improve the overall look of the golf course. The planting beds surrounding affected trees were redefined, and new mulch and pine straw were distributed. The clubhouse, golf cart structure, storage shed and on-course rain shelters also were renovated while the golf course was closed. The exteriors of the aforementioned buildings were repainted, while concrete walkways around the clubhouse were refinished. The interior of the clubhouse received new flooring, paint and upgrades in bathroom fixtures. The Greenside Café was updated with more efficient cabinetry storage areas and a new point-of-sale kiosk. Additionally, a new patio was put in at the back of the clubhouse, and a new glass door was installed to access it. Old shrubs around the clubhouse were removed, and a new landscaping design was implemented. In addition, new signage was placed throughout the facility. Directional signs were added at the golf course entrance and around the clubhouse. Hole signs and tee yardage markers were placed on the golf course. A new pay by time system was initiated at the driving range in September Customers sign in at the front desk upon arrival and check out when done, paying for the amount of time spent at the range. Driving range balls are placed on the tees and around the short game area for customer use. The first 20 minutes currently costs $4.00, with each 10-minute increment thereafter costing $1.00. Customers took to the new system quite well, with only a few minor complaints logged. Even with the golf course closure, FY 2007 driving range income was up $27,754 from the $193,508 recorded in FY D-64

2 To accommodate the new payment system at the range, modifications were made to the driving range building. Fences were added to enclose the entire driving range facility. A new glass storefront was added to the entrance of the driving range building to facilitate customer check-in and check-out. In June 2007, the golf course replaced its old gas-powered golf carts with new electric carts. The cart storage building had to be modified to accommodate the chargers necessary for the golf cart batteries. Sand divot mix bottles are now on every cart in order to speed up the divot healing process on the golf course. The new electric golf carts are a great enhancement to the overall image of the facility. Golf course member tournaments were held in March and April. While the feedback was very positive from those that played, the overall attendance and support of the membership was lacking. Customer service expectations were raised by the addition of dedicated first tee starters, golf course rangers, bag drop attendants, and beverage cart personnel. A new marketing brochure was assembled and distributed on campus and throughout the Athens area. A more aggressive media campaign began with the golf course reopening in December Newspaper, magazine, Internet and radio advertisements were placed on a more consistent basis in an effort to gain public awareness for the University Golf Course. A small University Faculty Golf League was established in May League members met every Tuesday evening to enjoy nine holes of fellowship and competition. All of the feedback was positive and the league was a big success. Most of the league members were unable to continue playing once fall semester began, so the league ended the first week of August Summary of FY 2008 Goals The primary goal for FY 2008 is to continue the successful grow-in period for the new greens and other immature areas of the golf course. FY 2008 should complete the anticipated two-year grow-in process from the renovation of the previous year. Other important plans for FY 2008 include: The creation of more University-related golf leagues. The ability to purchase advance tee times and gift certificates via the golf course s online store. The addition of permanent signage at the driving range listing facility policies and rules. Purchasing new two-way radios for the golf course in order to improve employee communication between the golf shop, starters, rangers, cart staff and driving range staff. The hiring of an outside services manager in order to further elevate the level of customer service and improve employee training and education practices. D-65

3 The UGA Amateur Golf Tournament, absent during the renovation period, will return to the golf course s tournament schedule. Desired physical improvements, including building a starter s hut in between the practice putting green and first tee, permanent front-desk furniture and fixtures at the driving range, and the installation of three flag poles and a large street clock on the northeast side of the practice putting green. Installing greenside electric fans at the practice putting green (two fans) and on holes 2, 3, 5, 8, 11 (two fans), 12, 13, 15 and 16. New underground power lines will be necessary to provide electricity at those locations. To improve the overall appearance of the facility, the old landscape areas around the golf course will be renovated and filled in with pine straw or mulch. This work will include the cleaning out of overgrown wooded areas that line the outside edges of the fairways. The removal of trees that are dead or ones that obstruct sunlight and air movement to putting green sites. D-66
