1 P.O. Box 64619, 4721 Hwy. # 7 East Unionville, ON, L3R 0M9 (905) Newsletter APRIL 2011 PRESIDENT S MESSAGE The UTC Executive Team has been working extremely hard over the winter season putting the final touches on UTC s 2011 programs and events. Nets up day was a beautiful sunny day and we were able to put up all of our windscreens, so that we can start playing tennis. Our 3 clay courts will be ready very shortly if the weather permits. Thanks to both Zac Manakil, Clubhouse Manager, and Gord Llewellyn, Vice-President/Monitors Director, for making this happen. Back in full swing are the spring lesson programs. This is a great way for both juniors and adults to build up or strengthen their game. These lessons are filling up fast so if you have not already registered, please visit our website at You must be a UTC member before you can sign up for lessons. Once again, it gives me great pleasure to welcome back, and newly appointed as Head Pro, Sally Coles. Sally is Level 3 certified with over 25 years teaching experience. As a player, Sally is a former Canadian #1, in both singles and doubles, having won over 13 National Age Group titles. It gives me great pleasure also to introduce our new Tennis Pro, Daniel Salmon. Daniel has been coaching tennis for 18 years, and is Tennis Canada certified as both a Coach 1 and a Club Pro 2 level. Sally and Daniel will be working together to provide all of our members with a great tennis experience by leading our junior and adult lesson and camp programs which range from beginner to advanced level. Our new Social Director, Nancy Lin and the Executive Team have been busy organizing for the April 30th Opening Day festivities. Lots of information about this exciting event elsewhere in this Newsletter. New for this year, Mayfair is offering a special promotion. If you join Mayfair, they are offering to pay your UTC membership. If you are already a member of Mayfair, you will be entitled to 10 free rain dates. Please read the attached flyer for further details on how to take advantage of this promotion. The UTC Executive Team has faced many challenges and changes this year to which we hope will be an improvement to our club. I am very grateful for the Team that I have this year as they have allowed me to grow from a personal standpoint. Their hard efforts and camaraderie have provided me with the strength that I needed to continue on in the President s role. Thank you everyone. Heidi Strassguertl, President The nets and windscreens are now up. Thanks to Gord and Zac, and all the volunteers who showed up to help! Would Spring weather also please show up?? Inside this issue: President s Message Upcoming Events Opening Day Courts Update Competitive News Friday Night Socials Tournaments Update News For Juniors Summer Camps Events Calendar Mayfair Promotion Our volunteers enjoy a rare sunny day, installing nets and windscreens.
2 OPENING DAY Opening Day is scheduled for Saturday April 30th (if it rains we will try again on Sunday May 1st.). A free BBQ will be served. The event will start at 11am. We are pleased to have Head Pro Sally Coles and our new Pro Daniel Salmon joining us. They will give us some drills and hints on how to play better doubles. The juniors will take part in skills competitions. We want to thank our sponsors, Tennis Central and RCS Racquet Sports, for their kind donations of raffle prizes. So, don t miss this great opportunity to catch up with old friends, make some new ones, play some tennis and perhaps win a prize! More details in the attached flyer! Nancy Lin, Social Director COURTS UPDATE Rejuvenation of courts 8 and 9 began last fall, but cooler temperatures prevented completion. Here we are mid April, and unfortunately, inconsistent weather has again delayed the repair. We are still hopeful that they will be ready by Opening Day. Members who are really keen to play, have been enjoying the fact that the nets for courts 1 to 4 are up. Until the official opening of the club, if a monitor is not on duty, please be respectful of others who may be waiting to play, and limit your time to one hour. Shoe tags should be visible. See you on the courts! Think Tropical!
