2 Showjumping is an international sport enjoyed by thousands of people worldwide and is one of the popular events of the modern Olympic Games, attracting many high-profile people, both in Australia and overseas. It is one of the few sports where men and women compete on equal terms, both in individual and team events. The Mount Gambier was formed in the late 1970 s by a group of enthusiasts wanting to promote the sport within the region. The Club has flourished since its inception and is now considered one of the most innovative equestrian clubs in Australia. Every Easter the Club hosts its annual Showjumping Festival in the Velodrome at the Blue Lake Sports Park, in Mount Gambier. The Velodrome is an exceptional arena for jumping as it acts as natural amphitheatre, providing spectators with the chance to view the showjumping action from above. This is a wonderful experience that is unique to the Mount Gambier events. To compliment the Easter Festival, the now 20-year-old Junior/Young Rider Carnival was introduced at the same venue in 1998 this is generally conducted on or around the first weekend in January. This event has gone from strength to strength, and is one of very few events in Australia that is specifically tailored for our up and coming Junior/Young Riders. The Easter Festival is one of the elite equestrian events held in Australia with horses and riders who have represented Australia, together with those who aspire to represent Australia, at national and international level, all enjoying the excellence of this event. The Junior/Young Rider Carnival has become equally popular and attracts competitors and their families from most states of Australia. This event is now listed as a must attend for riders vying for inclusion on the Elite Squads in South Australia and Victoria. In 2004 the Club hosted the Australian Showjumping Championships. Jumping Classes were conducted inside the Velodrome and on the adjacent football oval. At the time our small club reset the benchmark for hosting the National Showjumping events, with the reputation continuing. Accolades for the Club and its ability to run high profile events with exceptional success are recognised by the Sport s governing bodies and regularly appear in equestrian magazines and on the web. For the past 20 years the Club has been manufacturing its own International standard equipment. The Club can equip two arenas with these magnificent showjumps, designed and built by John Wilsher and David Johnson.

3 Our showjumps have been utilised by many high-profile showjumping events, including the Australian Showjumping Championships (Mt Pleasant Mt Gambier), Hermes International Showjumping (Sydney), Asian Pacific Games, Werribee Victoria, Royal Adelaide Show, Gawler Three Day Event, Adelaide International Horse Trials and Busker s Festival (Mortlake). We support the local Agricultural Shows in the South East and Western Victoria by providing the showjumping equipment. Besides the two annual events held at the Velodrome, the club also holds Training, competition days and clinics with Elite coaches (e.g. Russell Johnstone) during the year, attracting participants from across the Green Triangle and Western District areas. Many past and present members of the Mount Gambier Showjumping Club have gone on to compete at both national and international level. Kristy Bruhn, local rider, Club Secretary and Life Member, started her jumping right here in Mount Gambier and has achieved much success on the National Circuit. She is a World Cup Qualifier winner, multiple State Champion and in 2016 won the Australian Speed Championship. Further to her success, Kristy is a wonderful role model for all of our Club members. Dr. Denis Goulding BVS, a former Committee member, has been the official Olympic Vet for Australian equestrian teams travelling overseas and was officiating when Australia won gold medals at the Barcelona, Atlanta and Sydney Olympics and the silver medal at the Beijing Olympics (Hong Kong). Whilst no longer a Committee member, Denis plays a very active part within the Club as the resident Groundskeeper. Current Club President, David Johnson is an Equestrian Australia approved Course Designer, and is the resident Course Designer for the Junior/Young Rider Carnival and the Green Triangle Winter Series. David has designed many courses across South Australia and Victoria. The Club: The Club is serviced by a group of elected Committee members, Various members along with supportive parents and friends who all aid in the further development and growth of our Club. The membership year runs from Jan1 Dec 31 and over the last 5 years has sustained a membership of over 60. In 2018 we are already looking like realising our target of 75 members. At the last Junior/Young Rider Carnival we saw over 20 local riders competing with some of the best Juniors and Young Riders in the Southern States. Worth noting is that 16 of these riders did so for the first time.
