5. The Central Victoria Academy Program Objectives The objectives of the Junior Academy Program will be as follows: Increase the depth of talent within the BJFL, BFNL, LVFL, HDFL and NCFL Junior competitions through exposing more players to a higher level of training, participation & coaching. Increase the standard of competition within the various junior leagues through up skilling players, giving them confidence to play at a higher standard of competition. At representative level we strive to influence the on-field behaviour & values of young players. Through the Academy we hope to extend this influence by providing a high quality training and playing environment. Extend and improve the quality of coaching within the BJFL, BFNL, LVFL, HDFL & NCFL Junior competitions by involving more coaches in the Academy than can typically be catered for at club level. In doing so we aspire to Expand the opportunity for more players to be considered for representative football. Develop an elite talent pathway link for prospective inter-league players. The Academy is designed to complement the various Inter-league programs in the same way that the Inter-league program complements the elite programs within the TAC pathways.

5. The Central Victoria Academy Program Objectives.Continued. 1. Provide a forum for coaches to be exposed to and mentored by more senior and experienced coaches, ideally influencing their behaviours in a positive manner when coaching at local or representative level. 2. Provide a forum for coaches to interact and build relationships between clubs so that the competitive nature of coaching can be tempered by the experience of coaching together. Collaboration and co-operation is a better outcome than conflict. 3. Provide an environment that promotes appropriate behaviour from coaches to players. 4. Develop strong links between Central Victoria Australian Football Coaches Association (CV AFCA) to academy coaches & to local community club coaches.

6. AFL Central Victoria Academy Philosophy Academy Philosophy: Young participants play football for a variety of reasons but primarily for fun, enjoyment and a sense of team. It is a privileged position to assist young players to achieve these goals. This is not a role to be taken lightly as their experience at your junior football club or in the case of the AFL Central Victoria Academy will have a strong bearing on whether or not they will have the confidence and skill to progress to senior football at some time in the future. The Coaching Philosophy at the AFL Central Victoria Academy is all about player development & enjoying the process of this development. We must continue to build upon these foundations through maintaining a positive & enjoyable learning environment at all times. Team sports have long been recognized for their ability to help mould the values and work ethic of young people for future years. Whether or not children continue to play team sport as an adult, it is often the lessons they learn about team work as a young participant in sport that stands them in good stead for the workplace and life in general. It helps teach the importance of never giving up irrespective of the circumstances, always striving for one s personal best. As a region we define success not necessarily in our win/loss ratio, but in the endeavours of our players and the support structures that clubs put in place around each of their teams. We define success in terms of skill mastery as well as making a contribution to the broader personal development of our players. AFL Central Victoria Academy goals are for each player to exit our academy program a better player & a better person! Academy Philosophy & Values 1. Team 1 st 2. Encouragement & Team Spirit 3. Responsibility (ready to train/play) 4. Achievement (best effort/performance) 5. Enjoyment 6. Respect & Discipline 7. Work Ethic (assists achievement) 8. Continual Improvement

6. AFL Central Victoria Academy Philosophy Continued.. The Next Contest: Control the Controllable Outcomes The principle of the Next Contest is all about focussing positive energies on what outcomes the player can in fact influence. A player cannot change an event that has just passed. Whether that is a dropped mark, a missed shot at goal, a duffed handball or a poor umpiring decision - history cannot be changed. The only positive influence a player can have after an event is the Next Contest. It is an extension of the principle of Respect - no player deliberately goes out and tries to make a mistake, nor do umpires. So any energy spent abusing team mates, umpires or being distracted by supporters is simply wasted energy. Sadly too many coaches, players and supporters focus on a mistake and seek to place blame either on a team mate or invariably an umpire. In junior football, this is just not on. This is a behavioural outcome that AFL Central Victoria is aiming to chance for all participants in the Academy Program and the wider football community. Whenever a mistake is made the catchphrase we want to encourage players to adopt is Next Contest. If a team mate or an umpire makes a mistake we want the coach and his team mates around him to encourage him with the catchphrase Next Contest. Ideally if coaches adopt this mantra, players will start to adopt this mantra, then so too will his team mates. The intention is to take the focus from an error to a positive outcome. PLAYERS RULES & VALUES Continued. When a coach is speaking all players are actively listening: Eyes and Ears Swearing at any level is not acceptable Respect is a cornerstone of Junior Football We can only influence the Next Contest Prepare in advance of every session We rest past the cones not before When the whistle blows players run in to the coach Always encourage and support your team

7. Academy Benchmarking & Player Assessment Benchmarking & Testing The focus of the AFL Central Vic Academy skills program is kicking, Marking, Handballing, Clean Hands, Pace & Agility. To Assist the coaching & development of these areas the following testing and benchmarking will be part of the Academy Program. Fitness Testing Fitness tests will include; 20m Sprint Test, Agility Test, Push-Up Test and Time Trial to gage where each players fitness strength & weaknesses are at. This testing is also completed as a developmental experience to prepare for later elite talent pathway testing. Skills Testing Skills tests will include (if possible); The Buckley Kicking Test, The Clean Hands Skills Test (handball) Set-Shot & Running Goal Kicking Game Day Footage As a teaching tool, footage will be taken and cut using the Sports-clip-maker of players individual performance during games (if available to be used). AFL CV will notify parent if & when individual footage can be collected as not all players will have footage. This technology will also be used for analysing team components including; kick-ins, stoppages etc.. Feedback & Goal setting An important part of the Academy program will be feedback and goal setting. Coaches and players will set goals and review after skills testing and games. Some of this feedback will be informal, however all players will receive a formal feedback and goal setting report at the conclusion of the program. 26 Appendix 1 Academy Benchmarking & Assessment Agility Test A specific slalom-type agility test has been developed for AFL, which involves running in and out and around obstacles over roughly 40 meters in total. This test is part of the Australian Rules Football (AFL) draft camp. o purpose: this is a test of overall agility, including speed, quickness, flexibility, change of direction and body control. o equipment required: timing gates, measuring tape, masking tape, a flat non-slip surface, 5 obstacles made of PVC piping (10-12 cm diameter) with a 25cm base and approximately 1.1m high. The obstacles are weighted internally at the bottom of the piping to increase stability. o procedure: A zig-zag course is set up in and around five obstacles, as illustrated in the diagram. A set of electronic timing gates are placed at the start and finish. Masking tape should be placed on the floor at two corners of the obstacle so it can be accurately re-positioned if it is knocked over. After a short warm-up, the players should have a practice trial at 50% effort to familiarize themselves with the course. When ready, they start from a stationary, upright position with one foot on the starting line, aligned with first timing gate. The player then weaves in and out of the obstacles and should avoid touching or moving the obstacles in any way. If this occurs the test is stopped and restarted. Two trials are allowed, with 2-3 minutes recovery between trials. o scoring: The time to complete the test in seconds (to two decimal places) is recorded. The score is the best time of two trials. o target population: This test used to be part of the AFL draft camp, though it would be suitable for athletes involved in many team sports where agility is important such as other football codes, basketball, hockey, and rugby.

Appendix 2 Academy Benchmarking & Player Assessment Continued Nathan Buckley Draft Camp Kicking Test The test involves 6 targets ranging from 20-40m with kicks performed on both sides of the body. You are also scored on speed, accuracy, ball spin and trajectory. The highest rating you can get per kick is a 5 and the lowest score you can receive is a 1 with different criteria for each score. You receive the ball with your back to the markers and as you receive the ball you are given a particular marker to kick to such as left short, right medium, left long etc.

Appendix 3 Academy Benchmarking & Player Assessment Continued Clean Hands Skill Test Setting Up The Test The test should be conducted on a grass oval and in boots. The receive line for the take is 2m across the front. The release line is a further 3m in front of the receive line. The turn cone in between handballs is 3m back from the receive line. The Caller/Feeder, who feeds and calls which target each handball must go to is 8m from the receive line for rolled balls and 10m for kicked balls. The distances should be measured from the release line. o : 6m handball is measured at 45 degrees from corner to cone o : 8m handball is measured from corner to cone (in line with 6m cone) o : 10m handball is measured from corner to cone (in line with 6 & 8m cones) The player must release the ball and execute the handball by the release line, which is 3m from the receive line. The target players will be on the cones at 6m, 8m and 10m from the receive line. The scorer should stand at around 5m behind the Feeder/Caller, to best assess each take and handball. Running the Test 1. The test comprises of 6 takes and 6 handballs 2. Each player receives the ball and handballs to the respective targets at the call of the Feeder, 6 times to complete the test. 3. Every distance must be covered in the test. 4. The Caller/Feeder, feeds the ball in with the first 3 rolled (below knees) and the final 3 kicked. The aim of the receiving player is taking the ball cleanly at the receive line in all 6 trials. 5. The six calls will comprise of Short Left or Right (6m) Middle left or Right (8m) and Long Left or Right (10m) 6. Each take and handball is called randomly by the feeder/calleras the ball is released from the feeder/caller. 7. The player must concentrate on the call, take it cleanly and release the ball in the release zone, to the appropriate target with the appropriate hand. 8. Once the handball is executed, the player will jog back to the initial starting cone, 5m back from the receive line. 9. There is little need for rest and each test should take around 60 seconds. Scoring the Test 1. A target player stands on each cone at 6m, 8m and 10m 2. Each take and handball will be judged on the following criteria : 5 Points Excellent Clean take, quick execution with perfect spin & target not moving receiving ball at chest height. 4 Points Very Good Clean take, quick execution and good spin with target moving slightly to receive. 3 Points Good Clean take, satisfactory execution with target able to take the ball after moving. 2 Points Marginal Fumble but recovers to reach target with good technique. 1 Point Poor Fumbles and gets ball to target with poor technique
