1 Poor Weather Session HANDLING
2 Warm Up Game Keep Ball Objective To learn how to make correct decisions and accurate passes under pressure. Players should make accurately weighted passes. Players should use good agility and evasion techniques. Players should strive for good off-the-ball running and exploitation of space. How to play Pass the ball to a player on one team. This player is not allowed to move with the ball and must pass to another member of the team, trying to keep it from being intercepted by a player on the other team. All players except the ball carrier may move. The players on the team without the ball may not interfere with the other team s players; they must only attempt to go for the ball. Only rugby passes are allowed. Once a team with the ball has achieved a number of passes (e.g., 10), it scores a point. Variations The ball carrier is allowed to move with the ball for a specific time or number of steps; have advanced players use left-hand, right-hand, overhead passing; use a 20-by-20- metre grid and introduce a kick. 4 x 1 min Equipment Up to three balls, cones, stopwatch. Mark out a square 5x5 to 20x20 metre grid, depending on the age and skill level of the players with a cone at each corner. Split 4 to 12 players into two equal groups, or overload the attacking team. Mobility exercises (e.g., high knees and heel kicks) Mobility and strength part 1: Mobility and strength part 2: Players work in groups of four or five along a 10m x 10 grid. On the way up the grid the players move using speed drills. At the end they shift into an adjacent grid and return jogging.
3 Game Hit the Cone To learn how to make correct decisions and accurate passes under pressure. Players should make accurately weighted passes. Players should use good agility and evasion techniques. Players should strive for good off-the-ball running and exploitation of space. Each team has a designated cone at one end. Players on the team that catches the ball work to knock their cone over with the ball, but they may not enter the exclusion zone to do so. The players can run with and pass the ball in any direction. Players who are tagged by opponents must stop and pass to a team-mate. If the ball is intercepted, the other team immediately attacks its cone on the other end. If the ball is dropped or passed inaccurately, but not intercepted, the other team gains possession of the ball and you restart play at a side line. After a team scores (i.e., knocks over the cone), the other team gets the ball, and you restart play behind the opposite end line. Mark out a 10-by-20-metre to 20-by-40-metre grid with cones, depending on the age and skill level of the players. Place a larger cone approximately 2 metres from each end, surrounded by a 1-by-1-metre to 2-by-2-metre exclusion zone. Split 8 to 12 players into two equal teams. Mobility exercises Mobility and strength part 1: Mobility and strength part 2: (animal crawls and lateral body movements) Bear/Tiger Crawls: Crawl on all fours hands and feet Crocodile /Spider Walks; Start prone with the palms of the hands flat on the floor and crawl low to the ground with the lead leg in horizontal abduction and external rotation, allowing the inner thigh to brush the floor, and the knee to come up outside the elbow Crab Walks: Body in supine Yoga Table position Hermit Crab Walks: Prone in press up position move laterally crossing arms but not legs Players work in groups of four or five along a 10m x 10 grid. On the way up the grid the players move using animal movements. At the end they shift into an adjacent grid and return using drills such as lateral shuffles and cariocas
4 Main session Game Offside Touch (Set up two games of these running parallel) Players should strive for accurate passing and catching. Players off the ball should work hard to get into free space To begin the game, throw or bounce the ball into the centre of the grid. After a player has caught the ball, that player s team works together to pass the ball into the scoring zone at the far end, using various passes up the field. The ball carrier may not move with the ball. The team in possession is allowed three touches (or fewer or more as you decide); otherwise, the other team gains possession. After touching the ball, a player must pass to a team-mate. If the ball goes to ground, you can either allow play to carry on, or impose a turnover, in which the opponent gains possession of the ball and play restarts from that location or a sideline. The game is played for a specific period of time, normally four to eight minutes. One ball, eight cones Mark out a 20-by-30-metre to 40-by-60-metre grid with cones, depending on the age and skill level of your players. Set up two 5-metre scoring zones along both ends of the grid using cones or lines marked on the ground. Split 10 to 16 players into two equal teams. Players position inside the grid. 5 Wrestling on Knees Two players face each other on their hands and knees. Each player tries to wrestle the other to the ground and achieve ta chest to chest position. The coach must ensure that both players have a least one knee on the ground at all times. Players evenly matched for size and maturity. Have the players face each other with enough space between groups to allow for safe execution of the drills, but close enough to allow observation and control. Game Sideline Touch Objective To learn how to fix or drag a defender, make quick decisions, and accurate passes; to learn how to work off the ball, identify space, and run the correct lines to teach attacking players to support the break and make correct decisions; to encourage defenders to work as a unit and communicate whilst fatigued and also to fill in around the breakdown. The ball carrier must have good vision to be able commit defenders and pass to players in space. *The support runners must choose their lines of running well *The attacking players must execute two on one situations efficiently, especially when face with players returning from the cone Cool down Cool down: How to Play To begin, the attacking team receives the ball from the coach or from the defenders via a drop kick from the half way. When touched, defenders sprint sideways and go around the nearest cone on the sideline immediately behind the defensive line. The touched player restarts by placing the ball back on the ground in an appropriate manner. The attacking team has unlimited tackles with the ball. When an infringement occurs, the attackers sprint back behind the start line and immediately collect another ball to attack (all attackers must get behind this line before the ball can be played). If a player scores, all attacking players must get behind the goal line before the team turns and attacks the other way. The game lasts for a specified amount of time, usually two to five minutes.
