3 NET DOMINATOR Practice Plan- Session 2 Theme of this camp is MATCH PREPARATION Davis Cup / Fed Cup- Team Competition Drill Objective Time 1. s Warm-up Coaches to two pick two drills from the session 1 practice and get the players warmed up for session 2 10 min 2. Organize in Teams Organize players in two equal teams. The teams are to come up with a team name, which must have the name of a former American Davis Cup or Fed Cup player. The teams also coordinate a team cheer. 3. Team Line Up Line both teams up like a college dual format. Coaches announce the doubles matches. 4. Doubles The team match starts with a doubles match. Players must serve and volley both on first and second serves. 5. Singles At the completion of the doubles matches, send out the players to compete in singles. The goal is to get each player at least two (2) different opponents. Matches are timed to allow for the coordination of multiple matches 6. Homework Bring the parents to the side of the court and show the homework assignment for the players (see camp curriculum) 10 min 10 min 20 min 40 min 10 min
4 Warm-up Tag Objective: to warm up the players physically and mentally. 1. Groups of 4 players, each on 1 court with a coach 2. Players move twice around court slowly as a group to warm up 3. Tag: the teacher identifies a leader in each group who will be the tagger 4. Define the space within the doubles area of the 60 court for the tag game 5. Play 3-4 rounds 6. Once a player is tagged they have to stand still until all of the players have been tagged by the team leader Change of Direction: ability of players to change direction quickly (links to changing direction quickly and recovery in the game). ability of players to keep head level and eyes forward with a good posture Agility Dynamic Balance
5 Warm-up Skipping Objective: to teach the players the skills that link to technical development. Execution 1. Line the players up on the 60 baseline 2. Skip to the net while facing the net 3. Skip forwards with height at least 10 skips 4. Skip sideways to the net 1. Left / Left 2. Right / Right Coordination of Arms: Both arms close to the body Use of opposite arm to foot Both arms help the player gain height as skip. Athletic position: Head and shoulders level and eyes forward Back straight Quiet feet, with strong push off the ground Athletic position Arms and the legs do not cross the midline of the body (Note that the picture shows the player s knee crossing the midline). Knees and elbows are at 90 degrees to the body. Coordination Dynamic Balance Lower Body Strength Upper and Lower Body Strength
6 Warm-up Side Steps Objective: to develop quality movement skills laterally. Start at the 60 doubles sideline, move across the court to other sideline 1. Side steps with arms held out wide at shoulder height, 2. Move across court and back four times Athletic Position Head and shoulders level and eyes forward Back straight. Dynamic Balance Arms & Feet: Both arms stretched out straight at shoulder height and at the side of the body Both feet pointing straight ahead. Upper & Lower Body Strength
7 Warm-up Carioca and Sprint Objective: to develop quality movement skills moving forwards 1. Start on the 60 doubles side line, facing the net 2. Two carioca stepskeeping the chest facing the net 3. Turn and sprint through the other 60 doubles side line 4. Repeat with players facing the net. Start carioca with other foot and move back to the side they started on Carioca steps head level and eyes forward. chest, shoulders and hips face the net while the legs cross over Sprint: Use of arms to increase the leg drive. (This will increase the speed of the legs.) Coordination Dynamic Balance Speed
8 Warm-up Spider Drill Objective: to develop the players ability to move quickly, change direction and maintain balance Execution 1. Players in groups of 4. Place three balls on the court at junctions of 1. baseline + singles sideline, 2. singles side line + service line, 3. center T 2. 1 st player sprints to pick up Ball 1, 2 and 3 in turn, each time placing the ball on the baseline hash mark before moving to the next ball nd player repeats. but putting the balls back out in position 4. Repeat for 3 rd and 4 th player 5. Repeat whole drill This drill is NOT timed. 1. Players pick ball up and place it down with nearest hand to the ball 2. First step back to the center is with the correct foot 3. Change of direction is straight and quick, without the player circling the ball Coordination Lower body strength Multi directional speed Agility Balance
9 Warm-up Reaction Catch Objective: to improve reaction speed and anticipation skills (Reaction speed is a skill that can be developed at a young age). Drill 1 1. Player A holds a ball in each hand at shoulder height and drops one randomly 2. Player B is 6 ft. away and sprints forward to catch the ball after one bounce 3. Player B moves back after each successful try OR lowers arms nearer to the ground Drill 2 1. Arrange 4players in a circle, with one in the center 2. The center player faces the player on the outside who has a ball 3. The player with the ball tosses it over or past the player in the center to another player. The center player tries to intercept it 4. If successful the center player changes places with the player who tossed the ball 5. If unsuccessful, the player turns around to try and catch the ball tossed by the player who now has the ball 6. Count the number of successful catches by each player when in the center Drill 1 Reaction speed. Reaction and quick movement forwards Catch with hand on appropriate side of body Reaction Speed Coordination Drill 2 Concentration/Anticipation: Ability to focus on the ball, watch the player and then refocus on the next ball very quickly. Anticipation of the flight path of the incoming ball. Anticipation
10 Skill Evaluation Up the River Down the River Objective: to get the players to compete and enable the coaches to evaluate game skills Execution s 1. If preferred, create two full 60 singles courts using throw down lines (lines run along the net post to create the new singles sidelines) 2. Start with a 5 minute match warm up 3. Play games to 7 points, playing down the line 4. Give 2 points if the player wins a point at the net 5. Once 50% of the teams finishthe lead coach will yell bump (winners up, challengers down) 1. Grips, Preparation, Swing Paths 2. Are the players willing to move forward? 3. Who is looking to take the ball at the top of the bounce? Balance Coordination Agility Balance Coordination Lower and Upper body Strength Ball Recognition (not an athletic skill, but very important to observe)
11 Technical Development Volley to Volley Objective: to establish good continental grip skills for quality volley technique. Execution P P P P 1. Players A & B stand across from each other at the net 2. Each player s grip is choked up on the racquet 3. The non dominant hands are behind their backs 4. As each player progresses the hand can slowly be brought down from the throat to the handle. Hands (GPS): Grips- close to continental Preparation- racquet above the hand Swing Path- control of racquet towards target Feet: Athletic base with split step before volley Set the outside foot behind the ball and step with the opposite foot. Eyes & Mind: Play the ball above the height of the net: do not let the ball drop. Coordination Upper Body Strength Balance Lower Body Strength Reaction Speed Anticipation
12 Technical Development Volley Progression 2 1 P3 P4 P2 Objective: to focus on good volley technique with a continental grip and teach the players to volley in shot combinations. 1. Players start just behind the service line, ready to move forward to volley 2 nd player is on deck waiting 2. As player moves up and splits the coach feeds the 1st ball. 3. Player volleys FH DL to deep target 4. Player then moves up and splits to hit 2nd volley to a short angle 5. The other two players are on the opposite side working on volley to volley and playing a game to 11 points volley to volley Hands (GPS): Players are using a continental grip Wrist is firm at contact. Feet: Players can maintain a platform stance throughout and keep good balance Complex Coordination Upper Body Strength Dynamic Balance
13 Game Development Half Court- Approach Pass P3 P4 P2 Objective: to teach players how to transition to the net, to find the top of the bounce on the approach and control the volley to a target in front of them Two approach players and two passing players on either side of the net 1. Place a target just inside the service court at the passers end of the court The passer feeds the ball to the approaching player 2. The approaching player approaches down the line 3. The passer looks to play the pass to the target 4. The two players play the point out down the line Top of the Bounce: Recognition of short ball Movement forward to take advantage of the ball s position Contact at the top of the bounce. GPS Control of racquet head above the hand Movement of the bottom edge of the racquet to the target Reaction Speed Anticipation Footwork Upper Body Strength
14 Game Development Progression of Aggression Objective: to apply the technical skills to support decision making skills when volleying. The players should learn to recognize when they hit a big ball and hurt their opponent, they should try to move forward and take a little P4 ground. 1. Coach racquet feeds a lateral FH and the player takes the ball off the court CC 2. Coach racquet feeds a shorter ball in the court: the player takes the correct angle- takes the ball at the top of the bounce and looks to move forward 3. Player 1 is hitting, Player 2 is on deck, Player 3 is clapping at the top of the bounce, and Player 4 is trapping the DL ball at the top of the bounce P2 C P3 Court Position Recognition that the big ball has hurt the opponent. Take ground on the next ball. Ball Recognition Movement Footwork 1st step is out, allowing the player to open up the hip When covering the lateral ball, the 2 nd step is a cross-over step 3 rd step is load Agility Coordination Dynamic Balance

The players should learn to recognize when they hit a big ball and hurt their opponent, that they should move forward to take ground. 1. Coach racquet feeds a inside out FH for the player to take inside out 2. Coach racquet feeds a swing volley for the player to move up and take the ball out of the air, CC off the court. 3. Player 1- Hitter 4. Players 2-4: on deck (coach can vary this to suit ability of group) C Progression: After the players have progressed to a swing volley, then the volley short angle as the third shot should be added. P4 P3 P2 Court Position: Recognition that a big ball has hurt the opponent. Ability to take ground on the next ball. Ball Recognition Anticipation Movement: Movement sequence is out to the ball with a good first step out, a cross-over, and a load behind the ball Dynamic Balance Lower Body Strength
16 Game Development Swing Volley- Progression of Aggression (Live Ball) P4 C P3 P2 Objective: to apply the technical skills to support decision making skills in volley combinations The players should learn to recognize when they hit a big ball and hurt their opponent, they should look to move forward to take ground. The coaches should be working with the players to get them to recognize when to move forward. 1. Coach racquet feeds an inside out FH and the player takes the ball inside out 2. Coach racquet feeds a swing volley and the player moves up and takes the ball out of the air, CC off the court. 3. Player 4 defends the swing volley and looks to pass down the line 4. Player 2, 3: on deck (coach can vary these players task)
