Basic Handling & Shot Stopping Playing in and around the penalty area, a goalkeeper and two defenders line up with the defenders on each post. A server plays the ball into any of the three attackers at the edge of the area. The defenders become live on attackers first touch. The attacking player who receives the ball cannot shoot first time but must pass to a team mate. If the defenders win the ball they return it to the server. Progression If a ball gets cleared behind the goals by defender or goalkeeper, the server can throw a ball in for a header. After three attacks, rotate positions Starting position Communication Movement into/down the line Set position Technique of save / recovery saves Decision to hold, deflect or parry Copyright 23 Shooting

Basic Handling & Shot Stopping Two goalkeepers work at the same time. GK1 moves into line with S1 and receives a shot. At the same time GK2 moves into line and saves from S3. GK1 then moves to S2 and GK2 moves to S4. Each goalkeeper performs drill twice. Progression Change angles of servers Starting positions in relation to the ball Set as player is about to shoot Choice of save hold/deflect Copyright 24 Shooting

Progression GK1 plays for four attacks the players change positions S1 and D become attackers Attackers become defenders and server Goalkeepers rotate Starting position in relation to the ball Into line as the pass is played Set as player is about to shoot Choice of save hold/deflect Communication with defender Copyright 27 Shooting

Basic Handling & Shot Stopping Goalkeeper lines up behind a small goal 4 yards wide with two balls a further 2 yards wide and slightly in front. The server throws/volley s the ball at head height for GK to save. After making the save the GK must move left or right and dive at ball. Progression Server now plays ball towards outer balls for GK to save before it hits the ball. Starting position Footwork into line Set as server shoots Technique take the ball early step towards the ball Secure the ball Copyright 28 Shooting

Basic Handling & Shot Stopping Six cones are placed one yard apart. Two flags are placed eight yards apart to form a small goal between cone and flag. GK starts at the back of the cones and first moves into line with S1 to receive a shot. He then side skips into line with S2 for second shot, then into line with S1 and so on. Service should be to feet for a scoop save. Progression Vary height and pace of service Make GK dive and save Starting position Footwork into line Set as player shoots Technique take the ball early Choice of save/catch Secure the ball Hold/ deflect safe areas Copyright 29 Shooting

Dealing with Crosses Same set up as previous but now the GK starts with the ball. The GK throws to S1 and then moves towards him. The server then delivers the ball over the GK s head for him to move his feet backwards to catch the ball. Repeat to S2. Progression Vary height and pace of delivery Starting position Assess flight of the ball Communication As GK retreats, adopt a side-on position with footwork becoming a lateral side stepping movement Take off one footed inside leg for take-off Catch, punch or deflect the ball Copyright 30 Shooting

Intercepting and throwing GK stands in the goal A and B stand on the wings, each with a number of balls GK2 stands in the field GK3 stands next to the goal Sequence A plays a cross in front of the goal (1) GK1 throws to GK (2) GK2 catches the ball and throws it back to A (3) Repeat the sequence on the other side with B Afterwards, GK switch roles and positions Progression GK2 receives and controls the ball, then plays a flighted ball back to the wing GK1 drop-kicks to GK2 Copyright 36 Shooting

Intercepting inside a cone jungle Setup is same as in Exercise 1, except GK1 stands at the far post, there is a cone in the middle of the goal line, and there are numerous cones ( cone jungle ) in the goal box Sequence GK1 jogs toward the cone on the goal liner, touches it, then runs out to jump up and intercept a high ball thrown in by the coach GK1 throws the ball back to the coach and moves to the back of the line Variation: Instead of the cone jungle, GK2 and GK3 move around inside the box Training peripheral vision: GK s must remain aware of nearby obstacles while focusing on an incoming ball Copyright 37 Shooting

Intercepting and starting a counterattack Setup A crosser (coach) stands on the wing with a number of balls GK1 stands in the goal (see notes on the proper basic position) while the other keepers stand by the far post, outside the field. Set up another set up another standard goal and one small goal in diagonal positions as shown. Sequence The crosser plays a cross into the goal box GK1 intercepts the ball and either throws it at the small goal (1) or volleys/drop-kicks it at the standard goal (2) Rotate GK s Which keeper can score the most goals Variation: GK2 and GK3 interfere with GK1 s interception Copyright 38 Shooting

Coordination plus interception Setup is same as exercise 9 except: The coach stands at the corner of the penalty box, and five poles are placed in a row in front of the goal, slightly elevated and parallel to the goal line Sequence GK1 runs sideways over the poles, facing the coach, then runs out to jump and intercept a high ball thrown in by the coach GK1 throws the ball back to the coach and moves to the back of the line Switch sides every few rounds Progression GK takes a specified number of steps between poles Lay out just three poles. The coach throws the ball farther, forcing the GK to run backwards and deflect the ball to the corner (to GK2 and GK3) Copyright 39 Shooting

Corner kick/throw-in at near post The GK must instantly decide whether or not to leave the goal, move toward the ball, and jump behind the other players The danger is that attackers will play the ball directly into the near corner or relay it to the far post You can make the GK more uncomfortable by placing an extra attacker between the keeper and the other players Copyright 40 Shooting

Cross between goal box and penalty spot Players rarely bunch up in this situation, but the keeper still has to decide whether to move toward the ball and leave the goal open, or to rely on his teammates and his own reactions Put a little spin on the ball (cross) Forwards should keep shooting positions open as long as possible and move in behind their opponents Copyright 41 Shooting

Dribbling diagonally into penalty box First, the GK has to cover the near corner, to keep attackers from scoring directly (blue) This should force the shooter to play a cross or back pass to teammates in front of the goal (orange) The keeper tries to anticipate the attack quickly as possible, and either moves toward ball or moves to the middle of the goal line to block the ball there (orange) Fake a cross, for example by clearly looking at the area in front of the goal Meanwhile, watch the GK s movements and be ready to shoot directly Copyright 42 Shooting

Basic position on crosses Feet are shoulder-width apart Knees are slightly bent, weight is on balls of the feet Stance is loose ( dancing in place) Arms are bent and close to the torso; hands are open Eyes are on the ball Position 1: GK stands about one yard away from the near post, almost on the goal line, covering the near corner Position 2: GK moves backwards toward the centre of the goal and away from the goal line, toward the midfield Position 3: GK stands even further away from the goal line, in the back third of the goal Copyright 43 Shooting

Ball is played into run of moving player for a 1 v. 1with GK After player leaves grid, new player steps in and new 4 v. 2 starts Keep low Come off line quickly Cut off angle Stay feet GK always ready to come and intercept pass or position in front of goal Introduce defender to put pressure on from behind Copyright 70 Shooting

Improving quick transition by goal-keeping Player crosses ball inside 18 yard box. GK intercepts (catches) ball and starts attacks quickly by kicking ball up field to 2 attackers. Attackers play 2 v. 2 against 2 defenders and try to score on opposite goal Start game on other side after attack Progression 3 v. 3, 4 v. 4 Look up quickly after catching ball Pass/kick into space or run of attacker Concentrate on accurate kick/pass Copyright 71 Shooting

Goalkeeper Soccer On a 25 by 40 yard game field two teams of equal number plus GK s. Normal Game except the team in possession plays normal soccer and the defending team has to use GK techniques only i.e. diving, catching etc to win the ball back. Progression Rotate the actual GK position for each team Use larger or smaller field dimensions depending on age, ability and group size Encourage quick transition players must switch mentalities when they lose possession Utilize being able to use your hands stay up on feet and bide time to dive in for tackling Reinforce good technique in every aspect of play Copyright 72 Shooting

Quick Transition Two goals are placed on a field two thirds normal size. O1 begins by crossing into area for the GK to come and claim. The GK calls and then claims the ball and immediately delivers up field for the two s X s. The two X s go 2v2 against two O s and try to score past GK at opposite end of field. Play until finish. Progression O1 should have supply of balls opposite end GK can practice distribution to O1 after finish This drill can be built up with crosses coming from both sides, add in attackers pressing the GK and then defenders and attackers, as you wish, to create more game-like situations Big positive claim to begin the drill Get head up before and after you catch and know who you are clearing it to Select appropriate clearance long throw, drop-kick etc. Communicate to player and distribute quickly and more important, accurately Copyright 73 Shooting

Coach Game Mark out a 25 x 45 yard area Divide players into 3 teams of 4 plus 2 GK s. One team waits outside the field Each of the teams on the field positions one forward in its attacking half Playing time is 2/3 minutes Sequence Teams play 4 v. 4 on two goals with goalkeepers The objective is to create as many shots as possible on goal, preferably from a distance Forwards are not allowed to move back across the centerline; they try to lay balls back, redirect shots and finish rebounds Games conclude after two or three minutes, or three goals Rotate teams Progression Use resting team players as possession players Teams play 5 v.5 with 3 GK s Address vertical and lateral positioning Footwork: Practice the shuffle (shorter distances) and cross-over step (longer distances) Players should make decision to catch or parry early Depending on the height, position and power of the shot, keepers may use the fingertips or the heel of the hand to parry Copyright 74 Shooting

Competitive exercise on the goal Set up two goals facing one another, about 16 yards apart. Divide goalkeepers into Teams A and B. One keeper from each team stands in the goal; the others wait next to it. GK A has a ball. Keep extra balls ready in both goals. A shoots at B s goal, then immediately moves out of the goal and is replaced by the next keeper in line. B tries to stop or save the ball, then shoots at A s goal, and so on. First to ten? Variations Keeper can throw, kick, punt or drop kick the ball Change the scoring: Which team can score more goals in the space of 10 mins Goals scored with ground balls aimed at the corners count double Move the goals closer together to make it easier Copyright 75 Shooting

Running exercises with ball and coach G1 stands in a standard goal, GK2 at the left post of a 5 yard wide goal 1 yard away. The coach (C) has a ball and stands 5 yards away in front of the smaller goal. C shoots on the ground at the far corner of this goal, and GK2 dives for the ball, stands up quickly, turns around, kicks the ball a short distance ahead and then tries to score against GK1 with a well timed instep kick. GK s switch roles and positions if GK 2 scores, or after several rounds. Progression GK2 drop-kicks or volleys Reaching for the ball with both hands Keeping your eyes on the ball Copyright 76 Shooting

Coach Running exercises with ball and coach 1 Two GK s practice with the coach (c); each GK has a ball. C runs between the GK s. At C s signal, one GK throws to C. C throws a high ball to one side, and the GK runs to catch it in the air General warm up Motivational warm up Coordination training GK specific technique training Developing mobility and a feel for the ball Copyright 77 Shooting

Coach Running exercises with ball and coach 2 Running exercises with ball and coach 3 Setup and sequence Set up is same as exercise 13. At an audible signal from the coach, both GK s run forward and throw their balls up in the air, then each one switches sides and catches the other one s ball in the air 2. Setup is as previous; at the coach s signal, both GK s simultaneously roll their balls straight ahead. Each one quickly switches sides and dives for the other one s ball. Before diving for the ball, each GK has to do a coordination exercise (forward roll etc) Copyright 78 Shooting

Coach Running exercises with ball and coach 4 Two GK s practice with the coach (c). One player runs after the other; C has a ball and stands off to one side. At C s signal, the player in front stops with legs apart; the other player crawls between them ad dives for a ground ball from C. Afterwards the two players switch roles. Progression Sequence is the same, except the GK has to do a forward roll before diving for the ball. At C s signal, the player in front (GK1) stops and squats. GK2 jumps over GK1 and catches a high bal thrown from the side by C Copyright 79 Shooting

The Alamo!!! Two goalkeepers in the centre of box. Players on the outside pass the ball around and try to score through any of the three goals in the centre triangle. Rotate the goalkeepers everyone three minutes Progression If GK s are very good allow them to play in the centre on their own To speed shots up, play two touch on the outside or one touch if ability will allow GK s should be up on their toes and shuffling from side to side heels clicking Enforce good diving technique and correct handling Try to catch shots and eliminate rebounds Communication between both GK s is vital Copyright 80 Shooting

The Alamo One goalkeeper and six servers with a supply of balls positioned around in a semi-circle five yards from the goal. Each server has a number and coach calls out one number at a time to strike the ball at goal to beat the GK. Progression Servers should vary height and pace of each shot at goal and give GK adequate time to get in position Once GK has got the quick footwork move the servers back five yards and work on closing down the angle around the semi-circle Always be aware of your position in the goal React quickly to the number of server called and shuffle with quick feet across goal into saving position Hands should always be in ready position Handle each shot properly Copyright 81 Shooting

The Complete Goalie Drill One goalkeeper with five outfield positions with an equal number of players at each station. L starts by lobbing a throw high for the GK to call for and claim. GK then distributes out to opposite side O. O plays give and go with S and shoots at GK. Progression Repeat from opposite side with R starting and X finishing Players rotate one position in sequence each time i.e. L to O O to S S to L etc. Rotate GK as well Allow S to shoot or lay off to keep GK guessing Big shout for the ball jump correctly and turn and distribute quickly with an over arm throw Get in position early for each stage and shuffle feet Close down at correct angle for shot and make appropriate save Be alert when S has option to shoot or lay off Copyright 82 Shooting

Goalie Wars Two teams of two GK s on a 30 by 15 yard game pitch with two full sized goals. Teams have to score past the opposition by kicking, throwing, punching the ball in the oppositions goal. Players must stay in their of the field. First team to score three goals wins. Progression Play the game like a world cup competition where all teams get to play each other once Award two points for each victory Team with the most points are the winners of Goalie Wars This game should be fast and furious each team trying to catch the other team out of position or not ready Teams decide whether to defend and attack side by side or one in front of the other Although for fun, correct-handling, shot stopping, throwing, punching, drop kicking should be adhered to throughout Copyright 83 Shooting
