Age Group: Under 12 Years Session Number: 1 Date: Pre-Season Venue: Session Aims/Objectives/Outcomes - Grip and Carry. - Scrum Safety. - Blocking Tackle technique development. - Evasion. - Standing Pass technique. - Marker Play. - Running Pass technique. - Game Awareness. Training Session Outline (Warm Up, Skills, Drills, Games, Conditioning, Cool Down) Warm Up 1. Star Drill: Correct Grip. Pop the pass up and out in front of receiver. 2. Front On Blocking Tackle (2 activities): Focus on target area (thighs/waist). Head to side. Shoulder Contact HIT. Squeeze tightly with arms WRAP Roll with ball carrier to finish on top ROLL. 4. Ruck Shape & Marker: Spacing. Depth. Timing. 5. Scrums: Binding/Feet Positioning/No Pushing. 6. One on One Game: Two hand carry. Tackle technique (see falling/blocking tackle). Cool Down 3. Standing Pass: Correct foot, step, swing, release/point. Swing across body and follow through. Equipment Required: Footballs, markers Session Evaluation Improvements: Ideas for next session: 1. Star Drill - Grid 10m x 10m. Lines of 3 or more players at each corner of the grid. - The two leaders of their respective lines at adjacent corners have a ball each. - They run to the centre and then pass to their opposite player who is running towards them. - The drill is continuous and players have to be aware of other players when making their pass or receiving it towards the centre of the grid.

2. Front On Blocking Tackle - 4 players are positioned at the corners of a square grid (10 x 10m), set up so that the corners point in the directions of the compass: North, South, East & West. - One other player, the tackler, is positioned in the middle of the grid. - On the call of the coach, e.g. North, the player at the northern corner runs forward and the tackler must react to the call, prepare quickly and then perform the designated tackle. - The tackler then regains his feet and turns to face the player running in from the new direction as called by coach. 2. Front On Blocking Tackle - Divide players into two teams and set up as shown. - Coach calls a number. - Each team has a special hat at opposite ends of the grid. The person from that team whose number was called, runs around the back of their team and around their hat. - Coach rolls a ball to an end. - One player has to collect the ball and score a try at the far end of the grid. - The player from the other team must make a tackle. - Return to position and a new number is called. - The remaining players sit outside the tackling channel for safety. 3. Standing Pass - A circle of 8 markers, radius 6-8 metres, is set up. - A player stands at each marker and two players opposite to each other each have a ball. - Those players pass the ball to their left and then swap positions with each other. - The next players catch the ball, pass to their left and then swap with each other. And so the drill continues with each player passing and swapping with their opposite player. - A challenge can be set against another group eg. first team to do a 50 passes. 4. Ruck Shape & Marker - In Groups of 4, players work their way up a corridor playing the ball at each marker. - At each marker players must get into position. The ball carrier will play the ball to the dummy half passing to the 1 st receiver and onto to the 2 nd receiver. - The second receiver will advance the ball to the next marker and the process will start again - Introduce competition once players get timing and spacing correct Progression: - 4 vs. 4 Challenge (two handed touch) Each team has four chances to advance the ball through the corridor further than their opponents. 5. Scrums Practice binding and feet placement as outlined in coaching resources 6. One on One Game - Grid 20m x 3-4 metres - One attacker, one defender. - The attacker controls the ball for 4 tackles. - Defender retires 3 metres after a tackle. - The attacker taps the ball on the foot to restart next tackle after the defender has retired. - If attacker is tackled out of bounds they retain control of the ball come back in the channel, tap and go again. - If the ball is dropped then possession changes.

Age Group: Under 12 Years Session Number: 2 Date: Pre-Season Venue: Session Aims/Objectives/Outcomes - Ruck Shape development. - Communication. - Side Tackle technique. - Punt kick technique development. - Evasion. - Confidence in catching kicks. - Support Play. - Game Awareness. Training Session Outline (Warm Up, Skills, Drills, Games, Conditioning, Cool Down) Warm Up 1. Standing Pass: Catch off the chest. Step, swing, release, point. Defender to stay on toes and adjust quickly. 2. Side/Behind Tackle Focus on target area (thighs/waist). Head to side. Shoulder Contact HIT Head in tight. Squeeze tightly with arms WRAP. Drive with legs to finish on top of ball carrier. 3. Spacing/Moving Up Maintain straight line. Communication in line. 4. Evasion Two hand carry. Stay on toes and shorten steps. Feet position (shoulder width) for change of direction. 5. Support Play Timing/depth. Communication. 6. Kicking Two hand carry. Head over ball, point toe, follow through. 7. Kicking Game Kick to space. Catch technique. Cool Down Equipment Required: Footballs, markers, bump shields Session Evaluation Improvements: Ideas for next session: 1. Standing Pass - Set up "netball goals" 40 metres apart. For a "netball goal" place a player on a marker or inside a hoop etc. - This game is ideal for groups of about 10 per side. Set up a "court" using marker cones or use the natural boundaries of the area you re playing in. - The idea, of course, is to score a goal as in netball, or get the ball to the person acting as the goal who must not leave their designated space. - A team may pass the ball amongst themselves as many times as they like before scoring a goal. Unlike the real game of netball, a player may run with the ball, however, if tagged while running possession changes to the other team.

2. Side/Behind Tack - Players pair up and line up as shown. - They start to run forward and the coach releases a ball to one of the players who have to try and score at the end of the grid between the gate. - The other players perform a tackle from behind to stop them. - After their turn, the players go to the back of the opposite lines 3. Spacing/Moving Up - Grid 15m x 5-10m, markers at 5 metre intervals on long sides, 3 lines of players between first two markers as shown. - The coach stands with a ball. When he/she passes the first three players move forward as they would in defence to the next line of markers. They then move back to the space between the 2nd and 3rd markers and get ready to move forward again. - This time six players move forward, then go back and readjust. The next time, it s nine players. - After the third time forward the first three will drop off and jog back aground to rejoin the lines at the start. 4. Evasion - Set up markers as shown creating four gates which are each protected by a player with a pad. - One player is nominated as the attacker and carries a football. A marker cone is set up in the centre of the grid. - The object of the game is to score a try between the gates while the pad holders try to stop them by making contact with the pad. - The ball carrier has 1 minute to score as many tries as possible and after each attempt (successful or not), he/she returns to the centre of the grid indicated by the marker cone. The attacker cannot go to the same pad twice in a row. 5. Support Play - Two channels 25m x 8-10m are set up next to each other. - Players get in groups of Player 1 has a ball and it is passed along the line to the last player as the line moves forward. - As soon as a player passes, they have to run behind the line in order to be able to receive it from the last player. - To help create space, players should step towards the centre line of the two channels prior to passing. - When the line gets to the end of the first channel they move across to the second channel and come back doing the same pass and wrap. 6. Kicking - Sets of 6 markers are set up in straight lines 5m apart as shown. - Children in pairs and with one ball are initially positioned on the middle markers. - After 2 successful kick and catches, one of the partners moves back to the next line of markers. - The game continues until both players are at their respective back markers. 7. Kicking Game - 2 teams are positioned randomly in 15m x 15m grids. The grids are 20m apart. One team has the ball and it is to be kicked into the other grid. - The ball must land in the grid and be caught by the other team. - For an error, the non-offending team earns a point. - First team to score a certain number of points wins. Change ends after each game.

Age Group: Under 12 Years Session Number: 3 Date: Pre-Season Venue: Session Aims/Objectives/Outcomes - Correct play the ball technique - Running Pass - Front On Blocking Tackle technique - Draw and Pass (technique) - Marker play - Draw and Pass (under pressure) - 2 handed catch and carry - Game Awareness Training Session Outline (Warm Up, Skills, Drills, Games, Conditioning, Cool Down) Warm Up 1. Ruck Shape/Running Pass: Play the ball technique. Running Pass. 2. Front On Blocking Tackle (Extension): Focus on target area (thighs/waist). Head to side. Shoulder Contact HIT. Squeeze tightly with arms WRAP. Roll with ball carrier to finish on top ROLL. 3. Marker Defence: Stand arms length from player playing the ball. Stay on toes ready to chase. Pressure the first/second receiver OR Peel back into defensive line. 4. Draw and Pass (2 activities): Start straight and angle away from support player as you approach target/defender. Weight on Outside foot forward during pass. Swing across body and follow through. Draw and Pass (Extension). 5. Play the Ball: Point of the ball to inside of the foot. Roll ball back with sole of the foot. 6. Two on One: the pass so that the defender cannot adjust. Start straight and angle away from support player as you approach target/defender. Weight on Outside foot forward during pass. Swing across body and follow through. Cool Down Equipment Required: Footballs, markers Session Evaluation Improvements: Ideas for next session: 1. Ruck Shape/Running Pass 2. - Set 3 slightly staggered markers 5-6 metres from starting line - Children line up in groups of 6-7 behind marker, 2 3 metres back from starting line - 3 players come forward to starting line and stand in line with a marker - On "Go" the players run up and around the markers and back to start line. On the way back the player running to the closest marker to the start line, has a ball and the ball is passed along the line to the last player. The stagger is there in order to make the players pass backwards. - The first team to carry the ball over the line wins the race and the next 3 then come forward.

2. Front On Blocking Tackle (Extension) - 5m x 5m grids are set up with 1 tackler in middle of each grid. - 4 ball carriers positioned at each corner. - When the tackler faces one of the ball carriers he/she has to run to an adjacent corner along the perimeter of the square. - The tackler performs a side on tackle, then stands and moves into position in the middle of the grid to face another runner. In the meantime, the previous ball carrier stands and moves to the marker he/she was running to. - The runner must move in a straight line and cannot dummy pass, go backwards or go to the other corner. Make a decision, and go! 3. Marker Defence - Grid (20-25m) x (6 8m). Keep the width tight. - The attackers have 4 tackles to score a try. The attackers keep control of the ball even if they knock-on. Forward passes and other errors count as a tackle. The ball is played after a tackle. - The defence only retires 5m once the tackle is complete. - After 4 tackles mark how far they got down the grid using a plastic marker and then swap roles. - Voluntary tackles are a 5m loss for the attacking team. - Introduce a marker and call out the number of passes required by the attacking team. 1 pass will simulate the marker working out of their own 20 metre area, 2 passes will simulate the remainder of the field. - Encourage dummy half and first receiver to dummy and run to keep the marker aware. 3. Draw and Pass - Grid 8m x 5m, 3 balls, minimum 5 players per grid. - A defender goes to the far end of the grid. - Two players attempt to get past the defender to score a try. They have one ball between them. - Whatever occurs (try or no try), the defender moves through to become an attacker. - The player who ends up with the ball, carries it back to where the attackers are gathered and gets ready for their next turn. - The attacker who didn t end up with the ball becomes the next defender. 4. Draw and Pass (Extension) - 4 attackers, 4 defenders set up as shown in grid 20m x 15m. - One of the defenders is behind the 1st defender. - If any of the first 3 players score the try it is worth 1 point, if player four scores it is worth 4 points. The attackers have 4 attempts to score and start from the same position. - The defenders start 5m back from the 1st attacker. - The first three defenders and attackers are not allowed into the Overlap Zone on the edge of the grid. The only players allowed there are the 4th attacker and the defender who starts behind the line. He acts as a cover defender. - The attackers have the option of trying to get the ball to the 4th player or taking another way through the middle. 5. Play the Ball - Introduce a play the ball to the above activity - The cover defender will now start at marker before sweeping around the back of the defensive line - The marker will start on top of the player about to play the ball. The player in possession of the ball must fight to get a quick play the ball 6. Two on One - Groups of 4 in grid 5 x 10m, 2 attackers and a defender at one end and one defender at the other. - The two attackers try to get past the defender 1 to score a try. - As soon as they ve attacked one end they turn around and try to get past defender 2. - Players have 6 run-throughs and see how many successful attempts they make. - The defender tries to make a two handed tag of the ball carrier.

Age Group: Under 12 Years Session Number: 4 Date: Pre-Season Venue: Session Aims/Objectives/Outcomes - Grip and Carry - Support play - Side Tackle technique development - Confidence in carrying the ball in to contact - Moving up in a line - Scrum Safety - Spacing in defence - Game Awareness Training Session Outline (Warm Up, Skills, Drills, Games, Conditioning, Cool Down) Warm Up 1. Draw and Pass: Start straight and angle away from support player as you approach target/defender. Weight on Outside foot forward during pass. Swing across body and follow through. 2. Side Tackle (Extension): Focus on target area (thighs/waist). Head to side. Shoulder Contact HIT Head in tight. Squeeze tightly with arms WRAP. Drive with legs to end up on top of ball carrier. 3. Spacing/Moving Up: Equal spacing between players to cover area. First three steps fast and then steady. Turn and retreat (looking at the PTB). Adjust and keep even spacing. 4. Contact at Defence (Pads): Two handed carry on approach. Transfer to one just before contact. Tight grip, tucked into chest, elbows in. Drop body height and drive through pads. 5. Support/Communication: Early call, watch ball all the way to hands. Pass delivery see draw and pass. 6. Scrums: Binding and Feet Positioning. 7. Small Sided Games: Attacking variations. Defensive line pressure. Running into space for a quick play the ball. Cool Down Equipment Required: Footballs, markers, bump shields Session Evaluation Improvements: Ideas for next session: 1. Draw and Pass - Groups of 4 in grid 5 x 10m, 2 attackers and a defender at one end and one defender at the other. - The two attackers try to get past the defender 1 to score a try. - As soon as they ve attacked one end they turn around and try to get past defender 2. - Players have 6 run-throughs and see how many successful attempts they make. - The defender tries to make a two handed tag of the ball carrier. - Swap roles - All passes must go backwards. - The defender must go back to their starting position each time.

2. Side Tackle (Extension) - Coach calls a letter, A, B or C and the front person in that line runs directly ahead. - The defender D completes the required tackle. - As he regains his feet the coach calls a letter again and the defender makes his next tackle. 3. Spacing/Moving Up - Grid 15m x 5-10m, markers at 5 metre intervals on long sides, 3 lines of players between first two markers as shown. - The coach stands with a ball and a receiver. When the receiver catches the pass from the coach, the first three players move forward as they would in defence to the next line of markers. - They then move back to the space between the 2nd and 3rd markers and get ready to move forward again. - This time, when the receiver catches the ball, six players move forward, then go back and readjust. - The next time, it s nine players. - After the third time forward the first three players will drop off and jog back aground to rejoin the lines at the start. 4. Contact at Defence - 2 defenders stand shoulder to shoulder holding a hit shield each - Attacker 1 bumps through the hit-shields and passes to Attacker two once through to the other side. 5m - Attacker 2 will now carry the ball crash through the hit shields and pass the ball back to attacker 1. - Repeat process - Create competition by having a one minute challenge either with two teams or if you have enough hit shields multiple teams. 5m - Progression: - Introduce the hit, spin and pass 5. Support/Communication - Form two grids 12m x 12m. Select 2 teams of 6-8 per grid. - The players take up any formation in the grid - The coach throws the ball to one of the players who starts the game by passing to a team mate - The aim is to effect 10 consecutive passes to score one point - The opposing team attempts to intercept, knock down the ball or make the other team drop it to gain possession. The other team then commences its attempt to complete 10 passes. - This is a non contact game and the player with the ball can t run when in possession but they can move their feet on the spot so as to get in a good position to pass - Progression: Add a 3 second rule. The player must dispose of the ball within 3 seconds or the ball is transferred to the other team. 6. Scrums Practice binding and feet positioning as outlined in the coaching resource 7. Small Sided Games - Set up a grid of 40m with markers down each side every 5m. The width will vary depending on how many players there are. - Divide the players into 2 teams. - The attacking team starts at one end of the grid. - The defenders start in line with the markers 5 metres back. - The attackers control the ball for six tackles. - The defence only has to retreat back (after a tackle) to the next line (set of markers) so sometimes they may be defending from as little as 1m. - After 6 tackles mark how far the team got down the grid and swap roles.

Age Group: Under 12 Years Session Number: 5 Date: Pre-Season Venue: Session Aims/Objectives/Outcomes - Draw and Pass. - Attacking positioning and set development. - Blocking Tackle. - Kick technique. - Side Tackle. - Catching technique. - Defensive positioning and structure. - Game Awareness.
