2 1 - AFL Central Victorian AFCA Welcome to our first addition of the CV AFCA Newsletter for Firstly I would like to thank all of our new coaches to our group and we appreciate your attendance at one of our three coaching courses held in March, April or May. We have trained almost 150 coaches this year and most will now be part of our Central Vic AFCA. Congratulations and good luck on your coaching journey. These courses included breakout sessions for the first time this year, which enabled presenters to focus more specifically on each age group. These breakouts focussed on coaching issues, training, game day preparation, strategies and tactics. Coach education in will continue to evolve. We have had some great coaching opportunities established in our region, including a Pre-Season Coaching Seminar, which was held in November. We have also seen the commencement of the AFL Central Vic Junior Academy Program. This program involves 30 coaches in our region (both in Bendigo and four training venues in the North Central). This program also involves 330 players across our region in over 5 leagues. Other initiatives include, the Coach ID Program and the Player to Coach Program to assist player s transition into coaching. More information on these programs will follow in the next edition of the AFCA newsletter. Level One Coaching Re-accreditation can still be up-dated for coaches who have an accreditation expiry of For more information please contact me, details below. The AFCA Sub-Committee continues to work hard, meeting regularly to discuss coaching issues. In this addition, Craig Simpson & Bill Higgs have produced a great training presentation based on the coaching curriculum in the coaching coordinators hand book. I urge all coaches to keep in touch with myself and the AFCA Sub-Committee. Please take any coaching education opportunities over the next few months, particularly by attending the Coaching Seminar in Maryborough on the 21 st of June. It will be well worth it! Regards, Rick Coburn AFL Central Vic Football Development Manager , or ricky.coburn@aflvic.com.au

As a first time coach it can be difficult to know where to start with this group of eager to learn young players whose football knowledge and skills are still at the very early stage of development. In looking to provide some guidance for coaches who are working with Under 9, 10 and 12 teams we have decided to break it down into manageable parts so that a training session might look like this: 1) Kicking skills (10 mins) 2) Focus on another skill eg. Marking (15 mins)
4 3) Focus on another skill eg. Tackling (15 mins) 4) Game sense - games (20 mins) Kicking is the key fundamental to our game and each training session should begin with this critical skill. Kicking skills should increase in difficulty from static kicks to kicking to a player under pressure. With so many different skills in our game it is important that they all get some coverage throughout the year - but they all can't be done at once. The Coaches Curriculum provides a great deal of detail on each skill. Finally, training should always finish with a game. All players love to play a game and there are some great variations on games that really engage young players and allow them to practice the broad range of skills in our game. The main thing I would like to emphasise is to make training fun. Coaches and players alike should come away from training feeling energised and looking forward to the game on the weekend and training next week. Next addition We will cover game day coaching. 13 9 CONFERENCE 2015 MATT SYMONS DIRECTOR OF COACHING & PLAYER DEVELOPMENT GSJFC AFL LEVEL 2 COACH I was presented with the opportunity to attend this years National Coaching Conference at Etihad Stadium by the Committee of the GSJFC to observe and gain knowledge which would benefit not only the GSJFC Coaches and players but also our football region. Day 1 of the Conference started with Alistair Clarkson, Triple Premiership Coach of Hawthorn being the opening keynote speaker. Fantastic to hear from someone at the pinnacle of our game speaking about selling a sense of belonging to Players, Coaches & Staff, while having fun. The Hawks Coach advised all Coaches to : Play & Design Games (Small Sided, Grids, 3v3, Contests etc). Use different Balls e.g Soccer, Volleyball, Tennis Balls. Be Inventive. Place players in positions where they are under pressure at training. Relays (Skill Training, E.g Kicking, Run Bounce) Make it FUN!! Always ask ourselves where is the FUN in this activity? How do you make the Environment FUN? I was pleased to hear that this is precisely the training that Hawthorn complete day to day and that fun is a major part of every training session at the Hawthorn Football Club. Our greatest goal as a Coach is to make sure our players come back next year. A.Clarkson Day 2 of the Conference I attended a session by Brisbane Lions Academy Head Coach Luke Curran about Developing a Skills Matrix Data Base for your club. A Matrix is a set of conditions that provides a system in which something grows e.g Skills, Development etc. Allowing coaches to identify player s strengths & weaknesses within your group, which will allow you to focus more accurately at player s point of need. By targeting training sessions for improvement in the individual and playing group as a whole.
14 Skills ( Kicking, Marking, Ground Balls, Handball etc ) Field Positioning Decision Making Game Sense Fitness Mental Game Plan Factors to Consider when Implementing a Matrix - Developmental age of the Player (Chronological Age may be different) Sporting History Skill Level Physical Capability (Size, Strength, Fitness) Mental (Resilience, Maturity, Motivation) Other Factors (Family, Social, Friends) Rate your players using a simple or advanced rating template as your club requires. We have implemented a Skills Matrix Data Base at GSJFC this year and are happy with its progress. During the evening all attendees at the Conference where invited to a dinner, which was a great chance to talk to other coaches from around Australia and make some fantastic contacts within our industry. Shane Crawford being a guest speaker that night was a highlight of the evening, with him having many funny stories of his early times as a player and media personality to share. Over the course of the Conference there where many exciting sessions to attend on a variety of topics with something for everyone wether your a coach or involved in football administration. With over 300 Coaches and Staff from around Australia attending over 3 days, it allows coaches to up skill and stay up to date with the latest Coaching Techniques and Practices. As a participant of this years Conference I found it to be an enjoyable experience along with the extra knowledge I gained, I found it to be of great benefit to me as a coach. I highly recommend that if you can attend the 2016 AFL Coaches Conference get together with your club committee and discus of how it may be of assistance to not only yourself but also your club, players and staff.
