1 Welcome from Regional Branch President Welcome to the third edition of the Eastern Region Coaches Association e-newsletter for season What a terrific season of football we have seen across the region. Thank you to all the coaches in our region who have made such a strong contribution to the game in The role of the coach is a very responsible and influential one. You are the 'significant other' in players' lives beside their close network of family, friends, teachers, etc. It is to this end that AFL Victoria takes coaching and its outcomes very seriously. We see you shaping, influencing and supporting the social, physical and emotional development of the participants in your care. Our responsibility at AFL Victoria is to create an environment where coaches, like you, are equipped and supported in your role. This newsletter provides a cross section of information that coaches can read, utilise and pass on to help improve the standard of coaching across the state. The role of a coach is a responsible and influential one no matter what level you are at as you significantly shape, influence and support the social, physical and emotional development of the participants in your team. Wishing you a safe, happy and healthy off season and should you wish to find out any more information about the Eastern Region Coaches Association and its role in the region please don t hesitate to contact me abailey@efl.org.au. 2 Eastern Region Coaches Association Coach of the Year Last Wednesday Night the ERCA (Eastern Region Coaches Association) held their Coach of The Year awards at York on Lilydale. 170 people were in attendance as the best coaches in our region were honoured in front of their peers, special guest Peter Knights spoke to the room about his time involved in football and his thoughts on Coaching. It was a terrific night recognising the efforts of not only our nominees, but all the coaches in the Eastern Region who do an outstanding job Below are the winners in their respective categories: Auskick Coach of the Year: Dean Walpole - Wandin/Silvan Auskick Dean goes out of his way every week for the kids, helping them develop their skills to hold them in good stead as they climb through the playing ranks. His motivation and enthusiasm towards his coaching role is a standout and the parents have nothing but praise for what he is doing. Dean s focus is on development and just wants to give the kids a chance to become their own footy stars. Junior Coach of the Year: Mark Bailey - Upper FTG FC Mark has an excellent knowledge of football and junior development. He is very well organised setting routines and training structures for his players. Mark has a very team orientated approach ensuring all players get a fair go and a chance to develop. With regards to development, Mark likes it to be player driven, engaging them in the review process and getting them to help coach themselves. Youth (13-15) Coach of the Year: Greg Maki Mooroolbark FC
3 Greg embodies a great team spirit, motivation and can do attitude to his coaching. Communication is a real strength of Greg s, having a great rapport with his players on and off the field. He also engages with parents involving him in the team throughout the year. Youth (17-19) Coach of the Year: Matt Eccles Ringwood FC Matt is an extremely astute coach who prepares for every game thoroughly, his views discipline and abiding by team rules and principles as an important part of adolescent growth not only in football but everyday life. He wants to instil lifelong values that can be taken with his players outside of football. Matt is someone that the playing group love and respect. They want to play for him week in week out. Senior Coach of the Year: Brett Moyle - North Ringwood FC Umpire: Gerard Bolton - EFL Umpires Brett s has enabled his players to learn under the best conditions by putting them in match situations where they have to make quick decisions. Brett has open communication lines between the club, supporters and his players. He encourages players to challenge him and speak up to instigate the learning process. Brett s professionalism is beyond his years. With an ability to make everyone feel a part of the journey he is taking his players on. Moyle will coach North Ringwood Seniors in this week s Division 2 Choose Tap Grand Final against Croydon. Gerard has developed a strong pathway for junior umpires with over half a dozen umpires progressing from junior umpiring to senior field positions. Bolts is highly organised, with a terrific support team of assistant coaches and observers, which has fostered a clear improvement in the standard of umpiring across the league. Gerard has a great rapport with young people. He is able to communicate with them in a highly effective manner and is an excellent teacher. Female Coach of the Year and Lifetime Achievement Award: Cathy McDonald - Vermont South Special School
4 Cathy does a great job of trying to teach the right techniques and given the diverse skill level amongst the group Cathy ensures that every player is accommodated. Participation is one of the cornerstones of Cathy s approach and sees enjoyment and development as the two keys with the Auskick program. In a challenging coaching environment, Cathy, being a school teacher herself, is a first class role model in the community. Cathy has been running Vermont South Special School Auskick for over 20 years, volunteering her time to children with special needs and for whom football is least accessible. Her patience, ability to make the game simple to understand and her willingness to support others are highlights of what makes Cathy so well regarded in the region. She has been a magnificent volunteer and mentor in her time in the role and is a well-deserved winner of the regions Life Time Achievement award Young Coach of the Year Award: Leigh Murphy - Eastern Lions FC Leigh has done an outstanding Eastern Lions. His ability to helped lead a significant the first time in many years the on and off field has been is a regular attendee at his award Leigh will attend the January. job in his first year as Senior Coach at teach and his calm nature have culture change at the EFL club. 6 Coaching Reaccreditation Policy and Procedure Policy As part of the AFL s coach accreditation program all accredited coaches can extend their current accreditation status for another four years by completing successfully the AFL Victoria reaccreditation process. This process is outlined below for the three levels of coaching accreditation. Coaches who do not complete the updating requirements as specified below will be removed from the AFL coaching database and therefore not recognized as an accredited coach. Once removed from the AFL coaching database the coach may also contravene local league coach accreditation policies precluding them from registering as a team coach and will be required to complete another course. Level One Coach The onus is on the coach to maintain their accreditation and to keep a record of their coaching and updating activities which will need to be presented to the relevant AFL Victoria Development Manager on application for consideration for reaccreditation. During the four year period, the coach will be required to fulfil the following requirements: Actively involved in coaching as part of a coaching team or working individually for the length of the four year accreditation period* Membership of the regional branch of the Australian Football Coaches Association for the term of the accreditation. Note: *A coach who has not coached for one of the four years of their accreditation period due to factors which the AFL Victoria Development Manager and/or the Coaching Development Manager consider legitimate reasons (i.e. work, family, health reasons) may still receive reaccreditation, provided that the coach has maintained their membership of AFCA in that year. Reaccreditation Procedure for Level One coaches is as follows: Complete the reaccreditation form provided by AFL Victoria Development Manager Provide a letter from the football club (signed by Club president/secretary) outlining coaching roles over the past four years Sign a copy of the AFL Coaches Code of Conduct Be prepared to submit to a coach screening procedure (national police check) Cheque for $85 which covers accreditation and AFCA membership for the next four years If a coach has been found to have broken the AFL Coaches Code of Conduct or failed a National Police Check and has been disciplined for such actions, reaccreditation applications shall be directed to AFL Victoria s Coaching Development Manager for consideration. Level Two The onus is on the coach to maintain their accreditation and to keep a record of their coaching and providing evidence of further evidence of further coach development activities which will need to be presented to the relevant AFL Victoria Development Manager on application for consideration for reaccreditation.
