4 Game Reports Under-18 Men Pool B - Qld North 118 def. SA Metro 66 Queensland North opened an early lead over SA Metro to lead by 16 at quarter-time and from there, they never looked back. The final margin of 52 points reflected Queensland s dominance in all areas including a rebounding edge. Key Contributor QLD North: Kody Stattmann, the Cairns product, was a strong shooting presence, hitting 3-7 from beyond the arc to add to his total of 27 points, two steals and seven rebounds. Key Contributor SA Metro: Hayden Meakes paced SA Metro and was a shining light in the loss, collecting a team high 14 points with five rebounds. Under-18 Women Pool B - WA Metro 73 def. Tas 66 WA Metro held off a determined Tassie side after gaining the early advantage with Tasmania making several runs including a thrilling final quarter effort to draw within three points in the dying minutes. The inside presence of Emma Clark and Suzi-Rose Deegan was telling, with Western Australia holding the rebound advantage 61-37, whilst Tasmania s outside game kept them in it with 10 made three-point shots. Key Contributor WA Metro: Emma Clarke tallied 25 points and 15 rebounds and was a force all game. Nine offensive rebounds gave Western Australia the second chances they needed to keep the lead. Key Contributor Tasmania: Shelby Rayner provided a strong presence both defensively and on offence, shooting at 53% from beyond the arc with 7-13 and drawing six opposition fouls to help Tasmania in the hunt. Under-18 Men Pool B - Vic Country 81 def. NSW Country 68 Vic country got off to a flyer, leading by eight at the first change and then 20 points by the main break. NSW Country fought back in the final term to make the margin respectable but Vic Country will be pleased with their effort to start the 2017 Championships. Key Contributor Victoria Country: Joshua Kunen Gatbel was the star for his club in the paint, finishing with a classy double-double of 11 points and 16 rebounds. Key Contributor NSW Country: Will Cranston Lown did his best to keep NSW Country in it, recording 14 points, five rebounds and five assists. Under-18 Women Pool A - Vic Metro 80 def. NSW Country 41 NSW Country came out hard but Vic Metro soon settled to have an 18-9 quarter time lead. They extended this at every break to run out comfortable 39 point victors with an even spread of scorers seeing five players in double figures for Victoria. Their defence also restricted no NSW player to hit the double-figure mark. Key Contributor Vic Metro: Isobel Anstey had a double-double with 12 points, 11 boards, and made her presence felt defensively with two blocks. Key Contributor NSW Country: Bianca Green fought hard inside for NSW Country, earning nine boards to go with four points and an assist. GAME REPORTS REPORTS CONTINUTE ON THE NEXT PAGE...
5 Game Reports Under-18 Men Pool B - Tas 101 def. NT 60 Tasmania looked on from the opening tip before they completely took charge of the game in the second period thanks to a run. Their execution in their passes and shooting from both inside and out the perimeter helped them set the tone and while NT fought hard, holding Tas to just nine points in the third period, the margin proved too big to overcome. Key Contributor Tasmania: In his first game for the state, Hunter Clarke showed he will be a handful for oppositions with a game-high 28 points. Key Contributor NT: Not to be outdone, Max Davies matched Clarke on the scoreboard almost exactly, finishing with 27 points to his name. Under-18 Men Pool A - NSW Metro 74 def. Vic Metro 70 This contest was tightly fought the entire way, with both teams taking the ascendency at multiple points and there were 22 lead changes in the second half alone. Victoria took a three-point lead into both half-time and three quarter time but New South Wales came home hard through the creative talents of captain Isaiah Lee who had a game-high eight assists. The loss of Keli Leaupepe to foul trouble was telling for Vic Metro as they succumbed in the final term in what was a highly entertaining contest. Key Contributor NSW Metro: Isaiah Lee led NSW Metro to the important Day 1 victory with 16 points, eight assists and a well-rounded game. Key Contributor Vic Metro: Keli Leaupepe was dominant inside with 24 points and eight rebounds before fouling out in the fourth. Under-18 Women Pool B - NSW Metro 55 def. by Qld South 74 Queensland South came into this game as one of the championship favourites, but took a little while to get going. Once they ignited though, their pressure and hustle proved too much for NSW Metro with Qld South extending their advantage at every break. Jade Kirisome and Centre of Excellence product Miela Goodchild were influential as Queensland pulled away, whilst Shyla Heal battled strongly for the undersized NSW Metro side against her old club. Key Contributor QLD South: Miela Goodchild had an instant impact with 21 points and seven rebounds. Key Contributor NSW Metro: Shyla Heal worked hard in 32 minutes to amass 21 points and ten rebounds in an impressive double-double. Under-18 Women Pool A - WA Country 36 def. by SA Metro 96 SA Metro started off strong with a 10-0 run and led by 12 at quarter-time and their defence was just as impressive in the second quarter, holding WA Country to no baskets until the two minute mark. Their presence in the paint proved too much to overcome while they were also relentless in punishing WA Country for any mistake. Key Contributor WA Country: In what was a difficult day for WA Country, Georgia Adams stood tall to finish with ten points. Key Contributor SA Metro: Dominating under the rim, Darcy Rees finished with 23 points, seven rebounds and two blocks. GAME REPORTS REPORTS CONTINUTE ON THE NEXT PAGE...
6 Under-18 Men Pool A - ACT 98 def. SA Country 62 ACT scored an impressive first up win over an SA Country team still finding their feet at the tournament as Derek Emelifeonwu s defence helped set up the win and give the SA Country a lot of headaches while William Mayfield starred with 29 points. Key Contributor ACT: Derek Emelifeonwu did all the little things you won t see on the stat sheet. His energy and defensive presence helped ACT pull away from in the second quarter. Key Contributor SA Country: Mitch Wellington provided constant effort and leadership for SA in a losing cause and is sure to be a leader for them throughout the week. Under-18 Men Pool A - Qld South 72 def. WA Metro 70 A thrilling encounter between two teams who were tipped to be in the mix for the top four at the business end of the competition saw Qld South jump out to a 15-point lead in the third quarter on the back of some strong play from Callum Dalton and Flynn Cameron. WA Metro did not lie down though and cut the margin to just one with under a minute remaining. Some clutch free throws from Nick Stoddart sealed the win though with Wani Swaka Lo Buluk coming up short on a game tying runner. Key Contributor QLD South: Callum Dalton was a monster at both ends for the Qld South Men working his way to a game high 23 points and 12 rebounds. Key Contributor WA Metro: Jayden Stone put in an impressive performance for WA Metro with 15 points, eight boards and two assists. Under-18 Women Pool B - Vic Country 63 def. SA Country 51 In a slow, defensive grind through the first term, no club could gain the ascendancy with the scores sitting at 8-7 at quarter-time. Vic Country then pulled away to lead by 20 points at the final change as 20 turnovers hurt SA Country s cause although they were able to close the gap down the stretch. Key Contributor Vic Country: Chelsea D Angelo was one of several strong contributors in a deep squad, with 12 points and 14 boards in just 25 minutes of game time. Key Contributor SA Country: Tia Bails worked hard all night to earn 11 points, two assists and two steals. Under-18 Women Pool A - ACT 49 def. by Qld North 88 In front of their home crowd, Qld North got off to the perfect start as Summah Evans sparked the side off the bench with her work on the boards proving crucial. Isabella Bourne and Rosemary Schweizer kept ACT in the contest early before they were overrun. Key Contributor QLD North: Summer Evans provided her team with a much needed boost off the bench and finished with a double-double of ten points and ten rebounds. Key Contributor SA Country: Isabella Bourne was the star of the show for the ACT in a losing effort. Her 16 points and 13 rebounds showed the full range of her extensive talent. REPORTS CONTINUTE ON THE NEXT PAGE...
7 Under-18 Men Pool B - NSW Country 78 def. WA Country 76 Another thriller closed out Day 1 of the Champs and it was a physical contest from the start. Missing Lachlan Dent through injury from their earlier game, NSW Country found a way to win through the likes of Cranston-Lown and Maluach who both stepped up. WA Country came hard in the second half to take the lead but were pipped at the post on free throws. Key Contributor NSW Country: Will Cranston-Lown worked tirelessly for 22 points, eight rebounds and three steals. Key Contributor WA Country: Captain Alexander Ducas led the charge in the third quarter with over half of his 27 points coming in that term alone. He combined that with two blocked shots and some strong quality defensive efforts.
