Headlines The Grove Primary School s fortnightly Head Teacher Newsletter Autumn 3: Friday 12 th October 2018 High Aspirations; resilience; teamwork; creativity; respect; diversity Dear Parents/Carers, This is the last Headlines that Mrs Varga will be editing; we will be sorry to say goodbye to her as she is moving away with her family. Our new receptionists will be Mrs Della Johnson (Mon, Tues) and Mrs Samina Khan (Weds to Fri). Mrs Johnson is beginning with us next week, working alongside Mrs Varga in her last few days. Today s Walter Raleigh Class assembly was a lovely occasion- the second on the theme of Space. The lower school is becoming expert in their facts about astronauts and planets! We were really impressed by their singing and strong spoken voices which meant we could hear them right at the back of the hall! You will have received data collection sheets this week with the request to send them back by half term. Please do return them to us as they are vital in ensuring that communication between home and school is as effective as possible. It has been good to speak to so many parents about their children s positive start in the first half term of the new year. There have been lots of positive comments about books and learning at the first of our two Parents Evenings. We look forward to seeing many more of you on Tuesday. Thursday s Disco tickets are now on sale. Please look out for the committee members in the playground before and after school until Thursday morning 18th. Do encourage your children to come along (more details below). Thank you very much for all your kind donations to our Macmillan Coffee Morning on 28th September. We have a raised a fantastic amount of Sadly, a small moan ours is a busy office with staff who are hard-working and committed. A very small number of parents don t treat them with the respect they deserve. The children are well supported by and speak fondly of- the team. They always aim to help! Please speak to them kindly as you would expect to be spoken to. Thank you. Just one week to go until half term- it hardly seems possible! Yours sincerely, Jo Ibbotson Head Teacher Page 1
Harvest Festival Harvest Festival 2018 This year we will be supporting The Rotary Club of Camberley and the St Vincent De Paul Society (SVP) again in their appeal for gifts of cans, jars and dried food- all in date please. All donations will be sent to the Camberley Community Fund Store and will also provide Christmas Hampers for local families in needsomething which a number of our families have benefited from this year. Last opportunity for donations- Monday 15 th October! The children will participate in a Harvest themed assembly on Monday 15 th October 2018, when we will walk to St Peter s Church. Thank you to everyone who has offered to walk with the classes. Thank you too for all the generous donations that have been handed in so far. We hope you will be able to help us support this worthy local charity. Page 2

In case you are sending in a packed lunch, please note that we a nut free school, do not send in any nut products, like Nutella. SEND Information Presentation Thank you to all of the parents that came to our SEND Information presentations on Monday 8th October. Both the afternoon and evening sessions were well attended. Interesting questions were asked and response feedback shall be shared in the new SEND newsletter. The SEND newsletter will be sent out half termly so will be with you by the end of next week. The presentation slides will be available on the website for those that couldn't make it. SEND Surgeries If you have concerns about your child's development please come to see our SENDCo, Amy Batalli. SEND Surgeries will be running on the first and third Monday of the month. Please contact the office to book a private appointment. Woodland walk Year 3 Year 3 went on a woodland walk in Tomlinscote Woods and had a great time! We did lots of different activities such as leaf threading, building twig towers and we also carefully observed the variety of autumn colours around us. The children were brilliantly behaved and showed a love for adventure! Well done Year 3. Page 3
Does your child ride to bike to school? We have a steady trickle of reports from the public of dangerous cycling. This week a boy, rode in front of a car and came close to being knocked off his bike. Apparently the driver was really shaken by this and the boy carried on in to the school grounds. Please don t allow your child to cycle to school unless he/she has strong road awareness and is wearing a helmet. Children have been reminded about this in assembly this week - and also that they should park their bikes directly in the shelter and may not ride on site. Use of mobile phones in school grounds We have no wish to stop parents using their phones while waiting to pick up and drop off children but in the interests of safeguarding all children, please do not use cameras in our school grounds. Thank you. Page 4

WANTED! Helpers For Firework Spectacular Daytime & Evening of Sat 3rd / Morning of Sun 4th November Dear Parents / Carers, As you will already know the Friends of the Grove are holding our annual Firework Spectacular on the 3rd November here at the school. At the event we will have a BBQ, refreshment stand, tuck shop and a stand selling all sorts of LED/flashing items. To be able to make the event the best it can be, we need as many volunteers as possible, ranging from helpers to set up on the day and or taking down the next day, to stewards on the night. We need to have at least 25 stewards available on the night for this type of event to go ahead. All stewards will be supplied with a hi visibility vest to wear and will be responsible for an area within the grounds to make sure no one is smoking, drinking or using their own fireworks such as sparklers. We are open to people sharing this position so that time can be spent with your own children. Therefore we are looking for as many people as possible to spare anything from half an hour onwards. As any time you can give would be valuable to making the event a success. Below are the jobs and times we need help: Sat 3rd Nov - Setting up - Anytime between 8am 6pm - Running a stall or stewards - between 5pm - 8pm - Partial clear up - 8pm - 10pm Sun 4th Nov - Clear up - 10am onwards If you are able to help in any way please contact FOG by - thegrovepta@yahoo.com Via our facebook page - Friends of the Grove - Fog Pta Or through the school reception. 7 Sport news Sport at The Grove The Year 5 and 6 sports team have been working hard in their training this term and have made us all proud with their performances over the last couple of weeks. Last week, the Year 5 and 6 girls football team had their first match against South Camberley at home. It was a spectacular game to watch with the girls using their skills that they had learned in training. We came away with a 5-2 win and it was a pleasure to see the excitement on the girls faces after being so successful. This week the Year 5 and 6 girls football team were out again: this time at Connaught Junior School. Again, they battled throughout the game and we saw some great team work and determination. There were so many opportunities which didn t quite hit the back of the net and the final score (2-1) really didn t reflect the how well the girls played. The Year 6 boys football team also played. Their determination was unbeatable and it was great to see the practised formations and tactics being used. Unfortunately, it wasn t a win this week but we will keep up the training and hope that it pays off for the next match. It was a busy evening at Connaught with the Year 6 netball team also playing. The improvement in their game play was incredible. They had a better understanding of their positioning, they moved quickly into a space after they had sent the ball and their shooting was on point. We left with a very happy team after winning 1-6. We are extremely proud of all of our sports teams, especially their dedication and enthusiasm to training and matches. We are also extremely thankful to our wonderful parents who helped to transport the teams to Connaught Junior School we really couldn t give the children these opportunities without your help. Thank you also to those parents who were able to join us later in the matches to offer encouragement, support and biscuits! Good luck to the Year 5 football and netball team next week when they face Holly Lodge, at home, for their first match. Hopefully we will see lots of friendly faces to give the children as much support and encouragement as possible. Page 7
