1 NEWSLETTER Friday 19 th October 2017 Dear Parents/ carers, It was wonderful to see so many of you at our celebration morning today. Thank you for your generous donations to the Stroud Food Bank. Your contributions will make a big difference to many local families. I wish you all a good half term and look forward to seeing the children back at school on Wednesday 31 st October. On this first day back, the children are invited to attend school in Spooky Clothes in return for a donation to the Friends of Rodmarton School (see Friends News) Sapling Trip to National Space Centre Sapling Class visited the National Space Centre in Leicester last Friday. The children had the opportunity to visit the Sir Patrick Moore 360 degree Planetarium where they went on a journey through space to the International Space Station. Following this the children explored all the truly engaging and wonderful gallery trails on offer; they travelled through our solar system visiting different planets along the way, they zoomed up to the top of the Rocket Tower to see a real piece of the moon, they visited the control room and waved to their friends who had entered the launch pad, they even got to step inside a real space ship! It was a delight to take Sapling Class to visit the National Space Centre. Their behaviour during our Rocket Workshop was commended by the leader. They should be incredibly proud of themselves, they shared their knowledge confidently and worked well in their groups. Once again I'd like to say a huge thank you to the Friends who contributed 250 towards our trip. I'd also like to thank the parents of Sapling Class for their contributions too. This was a highly valuable experience, which complimented the learning in class so we are very grateful for your support and help to make this trip happen. Year 5&6 Football tournament A team of our Year 4 s & 5 s travelled to SWR to play against St. Marys (Tetbury), Leighterton, Avening A & Avening B Team. Rodmarton played extremely well against schools not only bigger but with Year 6 s making up most of their teams! In the first game we played against Leighterton, it was a tight game with the Leighterton Team relying heavily on two players, Rodmarton defended very well against them and often Theo & Felix playing in attack broke through. Henry making some good saves in goal. Unfortunately we lost this game but defended really well and played well as a team.in the second game we played against St.Mary s we played extremely well and raced in to a 2 goal lead, constantly looking the better team Theo scoring a great goal and Felix also playing very well up front with him. Some great defending and tackling from Charlotte & Ed in defence and Henry again making good save s in goal with some good midfield play and passes from Lily & Ella. As the game passed half way St.Mary s scored a very good goal making it 2-1, then in the late stages of the game St.Mary s scored a contentious goal that most people watching thought was too high but unfortunately it was deemed a goal and we had to settle for a draw. Games 3 &4 were against a very quick and organised Avening (B) & Avening (A) team, that had a number of players that play for Football Clubs making the task difficult but again we stayed strong and played well as a team, with Nathan, Rohaise, Charlotte, Lily, Ed, Ella & Henry being forced to defend for big parts of the game, so much so even Theo & Felix were having to defend. Unfortunately we lost both games.

2 The Team should be incredibly proud of the way they played as a team, they all played brilliantly together and the improvement from previous Tournaments is incredible. Player of the Tournament: Theo for his excellent goals. Cash for Communities The Gloucestershire edition of the Western Daily Press has teamed up with Gloucester & District Round Table to give away a staggering 20,000 to share among local communities and charities in Gloucestershire. From youth clubs and shelters to sports teams schools and trusts, Rodmarton Primary School is one of 40 groups who have been selected to receive a share of the prize pot. We have to collect tokens and if we collect the most we will receive 2,500. The remaining groups will receive a proportion of the funding based on the number of tokens they collect - the more tokens a group collects the more money they will receive. Please help by getting friends and family collecting the tokens for us which will be published each day in the Western Daily Press from Saturday October 13, and weekly in the Citizen and Echo. Flu immunisations Gloucestershire NHS launched its annual flu campaign earlier this month and have developed short video clips, combating some common myths about the flu vaccine and outlining which groups of people are eligible for a free flu vaccine this year. You can watch the video here. The 48 Hour Rule If your child is unwell and has diarrhoea and/or vomiting, please remember that they must be free of symptoms for 48 hours before returning to school. Friends News School tea towel The children have each drawn a picture of themselves which have been made into a fantastic whole school tea towel. We will be selling the tea towels for 5 each and they make a great Christmas present for uncles, aunts, grandparents, godparents etc. Many parents have already let us know how many they would like but, if you haven't already, please do let Rachel Brennen ( ) know how many you would like so we know how many we need to order. Christmas cards - order deadline Thursday 1st November The amazing Rachel Brennen spent two days earlier this term helping every child in the school to design their own Christmas card. We expect the card samples to be delivered into school today and your child's card will be sent home in their book bag this afternoon with details of how to order them. Please note that the deadline for orders is Thursday 1st November.

3 Acorn class Cupcake Thursday (and Friday!) The recent Acorn class Cupcake Thursday cake sale raised an amazing 155 for the Friends. Thank you to everyone who made and bought cakes - as you know, we had so many cakes donated that we had to roll it over to a second day!! We are already looking forward to the Sapling class cake sale which will take place in the spring term. Friends Fireworks - Friday 2nd November The Friends are organising a firework display straight after school on Friday 2nd November. We will be selling cups of hot chocolate for 1 a cup and chocolate-coated apples for 2 each. Please come along and make sure you bring your pennies. Children's toilets - decoration and heating During half term the Friends have organised and paid for the children's toilets to be re-decorated and a heater to be installed in the girls' toilet. Special thanks must go to Corinium Paints who very kindly donated all the paint. Second hand school uniform We now have a good stock of items of second hand school uniform available to buy. The list of items will be sent round today in a ParentMail. Most items are 2. Please contact Bryher Grimes ( ) if you would like to buy anything from the list or would like to donate any uniform to be sold in aid of the Friends. This has already helped to raise more than 50 for the Friends. Halloween non-uniform day - Wednesday 31st October All children are welcome to come to school on Halloween (Wednesday 31st October) in either their Halloween fancy dress, or their own clothes, for a 1 donation to the Friends. If your child would like to take part please make sure they come to school on that day with 1 to give to their class teacher. Please note that this is the first day back to school after half term.
