1 ATHELSTAN PRIMARY SCHOOL ACORN NEWSLETTER Letter Number 6 Friday 19 th October 2018 This Week s News General News Individual Photographs Braiswick Photography will be in school on Wednesday 24 th October, to take individual photographs of children, in all year groups. Children who have siblings in school will have their photograph taken together, as well as individually. If your child has any pre-school siblings, and you would like your children to have their photograph taken together, please bring all children to the office at 8.30am. Sheffield Children s University Newsletter Attached with this newsletter is the Sheffield Children s University Newsletter, which will give you details of available activities for the half term holiday. Taylor Shaw Update To make sure children don t miss out on our most popular lunch, our Friday menu will be served on Thursday next week: RED: Fish fingers and chips with baked beans or peas GREEN/PURPLE: Bean bake and chips with baked beans or peas YELLOW: Jacket potato with cheese, baked beans or tuna mayo BLUE: Cheese sandwich grab bag DESSERT: Cornflake bun Messages from the Home School Association Next Meeting Our next meeting is on Thursday 8 th November at 3.15pm. Please sign in at the office. Children are welcome to attend but must be under supervision at all times. We look forward to welcoming members, old and new. Foundation Tea Towels Thank you for all your orders. We expect to deliver orders the week commencing 5 th November. Halloween Discos Thank you to all of you who purchased tickets and attended the disco yesterday. Everyone had a brilliant time and it was great to see all the children s fantastic costumes. We are still counting, but expect to update you next week on the total amount raised. We would also like to say thank you to all our members, their children and school staff, who gave their time to make this event possible.
2 Year Group News Foundation News squid Registration If you have not yet already done so, please set up your child s squid account as soon as possible, as school s and texts are sent via squid. If you have not yet set up your child s account, another copy of your child s registration letter has been sent home today. If you require any help in getting set up, please speak to the office. Y1 News Recycling Materials All classes in Year 1 will be exploring 3D shapes during the week commencing 12 th November. Please can you save any recycling materials, such as boxes or plastics, and hand them to your child s class teacher. We will be exploring cylinders, spheres, cones, cubes, cuboids, prisms and pyramids. Thank you for your support. Y2 News No additional news this week. Y3 News No additional news this week. Y4 News Student Teacher Y4JM Y4JM have a student in class, Miss Marsland from Sheffield Hallam University. She will be working with the class until December. As part of Miss Marsland s studies, she will be carrying out an activity with a small group of children which she will audio record. This will not interrupt your child s daily routine and will fit in with their current learning. The recording will be transcribed within school, and will be kept completely anonymous. The recording will be deleted after it has been transcribed. If you have any concerns or questions, please do not hesitate to talk to Mr Mills or Miss Marsland. Thank you for your support. Y6 News Manor Adventure Visit On Monday of this week, we held our meeting for the parents/carers of children who are attending the Manor Adventure visit. If you were unable to attend, information has been sent home with your child.
3 After School Clubs Update The final sessions for this half term s after school clubs will take place next week, with the exception of the Karate club, which will continue next half term. Confirmation slips for clubs beginning next half term will be sent home early next week. Please note that we will no longer be sending letters home to say that children have NOT been given a place. If you do not receive a confirmation slip, then please assume they have not been allocated a place on this occasion. Whole School Times Table Focus This week s challenge is to learn and chant the seven times table. Let s Get Reading Challenge This week s challenge is to read in your sunglasses. 101 Things to do before you leave Primary School This fortnight s challenge is to make a balloon model. Artsmark Award Well done to everyone who took part in the Artsmark Celebration competition. We had some amazing entries and some well-deserved winners. We hope you liked your prizes! Keep on making and creating and share what you have done with your friends and teachers. Friday 19 th October 2018 After School Club Stars Y3 Football: Imogen Y5/Y6 Science: Zain Y1 Yoga: Lucy Y1 Dance: Aizah Y3/Y4 Karate: Eshaan Y5/Y6 Streetdance: Alex Y4/5 Basketball: Hamish Y4 Badminton: All Y5 Dodgeball: Harley Ayaan in Y4, won Man of the Match with his football team, the New Bohemians under 10's. Ivy in Y5, had her first taekwondo grading last week and achieved a yellow belt with green tag. Tayyib in Y3, plays for Darnall Diamonds Under 8 s football team, who have won the Sheffield & District Junior Sunday League Under 8 s cup. Tayyib and the team made a great effort. Congratulations to Frankie in Y3, whose football team, 'Middlewood Rovers', won the cup. Lukas in Y3, has received a medal for winning the cup with Handsworth Boys Football Team. Kianna in Y5, has been very helpful in the dining room during lunchtimes. Isla in Foundation, has achieved the British Gymnastics proficiency award for Level 8. Logan and Brenan in Y2, have shown kindness in PE, helping others in their teams. Joseph in Y1, has received an award for his great cricket playing. Miss Smith is proud of how many children from Y1S are practising addition at home! Mr Bentley s Y4 Badminton Club have shown great skills and brilliant OBE. Luis in Y2, has won a football medal for his team winning the final. Y4 Swimming Stars Y4JM: Khadijah Y4HB: Ela Y4TB: Lewis Well done to Olly and Joseph in Y1, who have completed their first season and received trophies from their cricket club. Aidan in Y3, was awarded Man of the Match last weekend. Clarice in Y2, has won a cheerleading trophy for picking up a routine really fast. Joe in Y6, has done some excellent work in PiXL and literacy this week, he is showing a real determination to succeed in all learning.
