CUMNOR HOUSE SCHOOL bes 22 MAY 2015 WEEKLY NEWSLETTER U11 MALVERN COLLEGE CRICKET TOURNAMENT Last Sunday, Cumnor House School attended the U11 eight-aside cricket tournament at Malvern College. Cumnor House School, fielding five year five boys, were the only side invited from Surrey with the other nine hailing from Worcestershire. Cumnor got off to a smashing start scoring 93-1 of the 8 overs. Some tight bowling from Aryan Kohli and company set up an emphatic victory. Cumnor's strongest performance came in the third group match setting 95 runs with only one wicket falling. The Cumnor spinners bamboozled the opposition restricting them to a measly 15 runs. At one stage Cumnor had them at 5 for 6. After easing through the group stage winning all 4 matches with relative ease, Cumnor were set to face The Downs, Malvern in the semi final. Sam Hadfield and Moiz Rana maintained their wicket remaining at the crease for the eight overs to set an impressive 79 run partnership. Once again, the bowling attack was too strong with Rayan Ahmed causing the batsmen great difficulty. Cumnor restricted The Downs to 40 for 2. In the final, Cumnor met Abberley Hall School, a team we had beaten earlier in the competition. However, the final proved to be a different contest entirely. Abberley Hall posted a respectable total of 63. Throughout our innings with the bat, Cumnor were never ahead of the run rate although wickets were in hand for a final flourish. Needing 29 off the final 18 deliveries, once again Sam and Moiz began to throw caution to the wind and played freely. For the second time in two matches they both batted through to see Cumnor over the line with a handful of balls remaining. It was an outstanding team performance throughout the six matches with many of the U10s making a positive contribution. Sam Hadfield was named Batsman of the Tournament scoring 190 runs off 102 balls. Mr Jones

2 LIBRARY OPEN DAY On Friday 15 May, the Pre-Prep parents were invited to join their sons for their weekly library lesson. The boys had an opportunity to share some of their favourite books, play a quick game of Top Trumps, participate in a variety of reading activities and listen to story tapes with their mums, dads and grandparents, in our colourful and inspiring library. This day also marked the beginning of the Year 2 River Boat Challenge. The boys are extremely excited to learn more about the different landmarks located along the river Thames. We would like to thank all the parents and grandparents for taking time out of their busy schedules to support this event. Thank you to Ms Nevill for her efforts in maintaining and developing our library into a special retreat which encourages a real love for reading. Mrs Kelly

3 On Tuesday 19 May, Year 2 had a visit from the Croydon Fire Brigade. The boys have been learning about The Great Fire of London and how much destruction it caused. During their Art and DT lessons they made Tudor houses to replicate the houses in London at the time of the fire, to bring the whole topic to life and make it as real for them as we could. The Fire Department came to visit us so that we could set fire to the houses and watch how fast it spread. The boys were then able to enjoy a talk from the firefighters and explore the fire truck to see how all the equipment works. The Croydon Fire Service was amazing with the boys and the Year 2 team are very thankful to them for taking time out to come and visit us. Mrs Kelly

Joe Horsley at the Harlequin Theatre On the 9 May, I went to the Harlequin Theatre in Redhill to play the drums with the South East Region Bell Orchestra. Even though I lowered the average age of the group by 100 years (well, nearly!), they all made me feel at home. We had a three hour rehearsal before the concert with a one hour lunch break. 4 I did not play in the first half but the pieces they played sounded beautiful. In the second half I played Midnight in Moscow, The Breeze and I (where I played the claves), Good Vibrations and Call Me Maybe. For the encore, I played a kazoo in The Muppet Show Theme Tune. It was great fun and I can t wait to do it again next year! Joe Horsley (7S) Trophies Galore for Arjun Gobiraj at the Croydon Music Festival This month, Arjun sang in four classes of the Junior Vocal Section of the Croydon Performing Arts Festival He scooped three trophies in the following categories: The Colin Snart Trophy (Boy or Girl Chorister aged 14 & under) The Tony Robins Bowl (Folk Song aged 13 and under) The Cannon Cup (awarded for best overall performance in the 2015 Junior Vocal Section). In addition to this he won four Gold Medals! Boy or Girls chorister aged 14 and under Classical style any voice age under 13 Folk song age under 13 Songs from the shows written before 1970 What an incredible achievement! Well done, Arjun. Year 1 show their bean plants with Year 2 to help them with their Read Write Inc. Comprehension. In the Year 2 Read Write Inc. Comprehension Group, we are reading and writing about the life cycle of a bean plant. Two Year 1 Scientists, Eesa Chaudhri and Yaseen Zaman, visited us this week, and brought with them the bean plants they have grown in class as part of their current Science topic. They shared their learning experiences confidently, answered questions from the Comprehension Group boys with enthusiasm and were a credit to their Year Group. Well done boys and thank you to you both for helping to make our bean plant life cycle work come to life! Thank you also to Miss Chadburn for coordinating the visit! Mrs. Parker-Brown

5 FOOTBALL SUCCESS On Saturday 9 May, five of our Year 3 boys played in the Under 8 Tandridge Challenge at Chipstead Football Club. They played for the Selsdon Junior Football Club, Hawks, who won the Challenge trophy. The proud boys pictured from left: Ethan Brown, Kobi Blake, Aryan Morvaridi-Mansouri, Jaden Blake, Jacob Louis. Well done, boys! ROCKET CLUB On Wednesday the 13 May the Rocket Club launched their Rocket Cars after school. The two cars were prepared, the 'runway' cleared of debris and the launch module and explosives safely primed. Both the Gold Car and the Green Car had 3 launches each, with increasing strengths of engine power for each launch. Unfortunately, the final rocket strength was too big for the size of our playground and both cars suffered damage when they hit the end wall with the Gold Car being a write off! However, the boys thoroughly enjoyed the experience and so did all the boys and adults watching from the safety of the Pre-Prep playground. Next half term we finish the rockets and will be launching them in the school field. Mr Sizer On Sunday 17 May, Yaseen Zaman from 1N, ran 2k at Regent's Park in the Super Heros Run to raise money for the charity MIND with his mum. Well done, Yaseen. You are a Hero!

5V Assembly Parents, teachers and students from Years 3 to 5 attended 5V s assembly on Thursday 14 May. The theme of the assembly was Happiness with Nayan Visrolia introduced the theme. Pavel Baldwin read a poem and some students read some themed quotes from famous people and acted out a short play about the town mouse and the country mouse. 5V students told the audience what made them happy and showed posters drawn by them during the PSHE lessons. William Evans asked a few boys in the audience what made them happy. Kian Patel played the Saxophone and Adam Court played the Clarinet to entertain everyone. The assembly ended with a prayer read by Charlie Thompson. Well done, 5V! Mr Vijay 6 We hope the boys enjoyed the sponsored walk. Don t forget to collect all the money you have raised during half term and remember to bring a cheque for the total amount when we return to school. Unfortunately we cannot accept any cash.
