1 CUMNOR HOUSE SCHOOL bes 24 APRIL 2015 WEEKLY NEWSLETTER BARBADOS CRICKET TOUR A group of lucky cricket enthusiasts went to Barbados in the Caribbean for some intensive cricket fixtures during the Easter break. We set off from Gatwick early on day one with cricket bags packed to the seams! On the way spirits were high as we discussed and pondered about the exciting activities ahead of us. After settling into our hotel, we set off for our first net session in the blistering heat, where the boys were put through their paces. The first match didn't manage to go the full distance due to the weather and we were comprehensively beaten in our second match. However, following a rest day which included a safari trip of the island, the boys were rejuvnated and came back strong to win two games in one day against the notorious Empire CC U13's. In the first game, Sam Hadfield (6T) single handedly won us the fixture by taking 5 wickets for only 11 runs with the ball. With confidence sky-high, the following day we managed to put a record breaking 257 runs on the board in only 35 overs. Ayush Patel (7L) was the main benefactor, with a staggering 116 runs off 107 balls. He also shared two massive partnerships of 98 and 115 with Trishan Patel (7S) and Sam Hafield (6T), respectively. The performance was topped off by bowling out the opposition for only 59 runs, where all 15 boys had the chance to bowl. The last game was the perfect setting for all squad players to get more overs under their belt and make a mark on the score-sheet with the bat. Yasir Khan (6L) took full advantage with 52 runs and Darshan Fernando (6T) bowled with complete confidence and control against a big and powerful U13 batting side. Over the course of the 11 days, the boys worked hard on all levels and facets of cricket and trained/played in the life of a professional player. To finish off an amazing and memorable trip, on the last day, the boys also had the luxury of a catamaran cruise around the island, where many of them were fortunate enough to swim with the turtles. 2 2 OLIVER! After 7 months of rehearsals, almost 100 boys from Years 5-8 finished last term off by performing Charles Dickens Oliver! The cast included outstanding performances from Arjun Gobiraj as Oliver, Aaryan Marria as Fagin, and Melekwe Aigbogun as Nancy whose performances resulted in very few dry eyes left in the audience. Other notable performances included Pravin Vijayaratnam as Mr Bumble, Panos Lmabrou as The Artful Dodger, Massimo Costa as Bill Sykes and Gorrav Bains as Mr Sowerberry. Boys were not only involved in the acting, singing and dancing, but also backstage, operating the lighting and sound deck, swapping microphones back stage, as well as playing in the band. The cast were a real credit to the school and the huge amount of effort they put in resulted in them delivering a show that would not have looked out of place in the West End! A huge thanks must go to Mr Sizer for his excellent musical arrangements, Mrs Carley for the props and Mrs McLaren for the exquisite make-up. A special mention also needs to go to Mrs Manisier who was persuaded out of retirement to make the superb costumes. Another outstanding production with vitality and energy, well done! 3 3 Year 1 Trip to Preston Manor and Hove Museum On Thursday, 19 March, Year 1 had a fantastic time at Preston Manor and Hove Museum. Everyone had to dress up as Victorian children ready for completing servant tasks. We had to help polish shoes, beat carpets and help squeeze oranges to make orange juice. We found lots of Victorian objects that we had been learning about at school, such as a mangle and a range. The boys were very well behaved and were an asset to the school. We all had a great time! I liked the Hove Museum when we had to guess what all the Victorian objects were. Ali Naqi I enjoyed pretending to be a servant, cleaning the fireplace with a glove and brush. Zaine Miss Chadburn

THE HOUSE MUSIC COMPETITION The House Music competition is always a two-fold event for the boys - firstly, to have the prestige of getting through the auditions to compete in the finals and secondly the opportunity to earn valuable points for their 'house'. Over the Easter holidays the House Music house points were totalled up and allocated. With over 1000 on offer, it was no surprise that the boys were desperate to know the results which were. Saxons 297 Normans 273 Danes 265 Romans 250 Congratulations to the Saxons, but more importantly, a huge 'Well done' to all the boys who took part!

5 5 Fancy a trip to the Theatre during half term? Sister Act is coming to the Fairfield Halls during half term and our very own thespian, Year 2 teacher, Katrina Trice will be performing! To avoid the booking fee, you can get tickets from the Stagers Box Office: before 1st May EASTER COMPETITION Well done to Alayaan Khan-1L and Arjun Gobiraj-7L, who both received runners-up prizes for their delightful Easter poems. The overall winner was Anoushka from 1S at the Girls School, who wowed us with her Easter Bunny inspired entry. Thank you to everyone who took part.
