1 BHS UPBEAT UPDATE Bergvliet High School Volume 1 March here are a number of T ways in which you as parent can support the school. The fact that you have your child here is an indication to me that you regard the school as able to deliver on the expectations you have for your child. Many parents work in this day and age and often lose out on the community that is Bergvliet High School. I encourage you, therefore, to support the school in any way in which you are able. Let me give you a few ideas his year we have already T had three Olympiads at school. These are the English Olympiad and the Science Olympiad. The Science Olympiad is divided into two areas, Physical Science and Life Sciences. The third Olympiad is the South African Maths Olympiad and the first round will take place on 16 March. We had 140 senior and 90 junior learners participating. Those learners who PRINCIPAL S UPDATE THE BUCKET LIST achieve 50% or more will gain entry into round two. There will be many more Olympiads taking place during the year. We encourage as many of our learners as possible to take part in Olympiads because the experience not only exposes them to the subject on a different level, but also allows them to be inspired. For example, the process of working through the set work for the English Olympiad and the experience of writing the exam has lit many flames of interest in the candidates taking part this year. The value they have gained from the discussion, the research and the intellectual stimulation goes way beyond the mere writing of an exam. Encourage your child to make use of these opportunities. CULTURAL UPDATE: CULTURAL WEEK ollowing a rousing reception at the Waterfront, Bergvliet High School s Jazz F Band was invited back for another performance a week later. The V & A audience wwas not disappointed as the Senior Big Band confidently and with great gusto took the stage under the baton of Miss Harlene Veotte. These performances were part of the Music Department s fundraising tour to Beijing Right: The Senior Big Band performing at the Waterfront supporting your child at sports, cultural or fundraising events, volunteering to assist us with substitution of classes, administration, tuck shop and serving of teas at our various events, payment of school fees (a priority), donation of goods and services, taking an interest in your child s academic progress, registering for a course on our Continuing Education Programme, recycling duty on Saturday mornings, corporate sponsorship and a multitude of other ways. ACADEMIC UPDATE THE VALUE OF OLYMPIADS To this end we are shortly going to introduce a feature on our website that highlights our needs The Bucket List. If you or your company are able to assist in any way to fulfil these needs, either in full or in part, we would love to hear from you. This is our Cultural Week and it is full of opportunity to get involved so we d love to see you around the campus. Stephen Price STOP PRESS Matric Dance Mania The matric dance takes place on 19 March at Kelvin Grove. This year the theme is 'Vintage'. The grade 11 dance committe has been working hard getting the invitations out to the grade 12 learners and trying to ensure that it will be a truly memorable evening. Easter Egg Donations We are asking each learner to bring a strip of marshmallow eggs which will be distributed to the the children at Sisters of Charity School, Constantia school, and if sufficient, the children at a creche in Vrygrond Rocking to the Bee Gees The Hall at BHS was rocking to the sounds of the BEE GEES on Friday 25 Feb. This was the first of a number of Tribute Shows which will be staged at Bergvliet High in the coming months. These are fundraising events and you are encouraged to attend for an evening of great entertainment. The next show will be Rumours of Fleetwood Mac, a Tribute Shows on Friday 27 May. Tickets will be available from Computicket outlets. Congratulations To the De Klerk family on the arrival of their new son, Willem. Mother and son are both well.

2 BHS UPBEAT UPDATE Page 2 GALLERY SPORTS UPDATE SUMMER SEASON RESULTS Jazz band stars performing at the V&A Waterfront Arena TRACK AND FIELD ATHLETICS Congratulations Nolitha Ngcaba and Bianca Voget who have been selected to represent the EMDC South at the Western Provinces Schools and Juniors Championships. This is an opportunity to receive Western Province Colours. Well Done Girls and Good Luck. SPORTS DAY We embarked on a new venture. The Sports Department decided that this year track and field events are part of Sports Day more than ever. There was High Jump, Long Jump, and all the running events. Also, we had a Cheerleading Inter House competition and there was a Spirit Cup for the House showing the best spirit. Watch out for more information next issue. CRICKET Notable Performances: Against Milnerton: U14 A won by 10 Wickets, Shaun Schroeder 80 not out Cameron Naidoo 61 not out Dylan Smith 51 Dylan Leo 45 not out Jason Arnold 4 for 9 wickets Liam Schoeman 3 for 2 ~~~~~~~~ Matthew Dookoo and Suhail Fortuin are in u19 Regional trials Hershel Snyders, Dylan Smith, Warrick Rhode under 15 trials ```````````````````` We opened the field to a girls cricket team this year, AND to crown it all our girls have won 2 out of their 3 games this season! TENNIS First Girls Tennis vs St. Cyprians won : 4 games to 2 Our tennis is growing in leaps and bounds and we are soon going to have to think about entering more teams into the leagues. This is great stuff so keep going. The spirit is showing. BASKETBALL We cannot forget to mention all the fantastic results the basketball girls and boys are producing. Well done teams! SILLY SOCKS DAY / CIVVIES DAY Interact are organizing a SILLY SOCKS DAY on 23 March on behalf of the Clothing Guild. We ask as many learners as possible to bring a pair of socks on that day. To pay for civies. BHS STUDENTS WIN R FOR BHS ast year Megan Hudson and Junaid L Newman were given the opportunity to attend the world cup final at Soccer City. While they were on this tour they, they entered a scrapbook competition. We have just been informed that they came third in this competition and have won R for the school. The money needs to be spent on Megan and Junaid at the World Cup Final FORTHCOMING BHS ATTRACTIONS FAME: THE MUSICAL April 2011 RUMOURS OF FLEETWOOD MAC A TRIBUTE SHOW 28 May 2011 Tickets on sale from Computicket.
