We trust that everyone had a good rest and a good start to This term has gone by very quickly and holidays are just around the corner. A variety of activities took place this term, which include, amongst others sports matches, cultural events and also the introduction of the leadership club and the president s award. Mqalo 8 May Natural Science Olympiad 1 June Examinations Begin 26 June School Closes (Term 2 Ends) From the Principal s Desk We welcome everybody back. Our matric class of 2014, did not disappoint as we managed to attain a 86.4% pass rate. Although this is good, it leaves a lot of room for improvement. This year, we will be very strict on enforcing academic performance, and we will not tolerate homeworks and assignments not being done. This year sees the end of the term of the current SGB, which was elected in We thank them for their many years of service to the school. Parents are also urged to continue donating to the toilet fund. We trust you will have a Blessed Easter season and wish you all the best Mr Z.H. Sinuka

2 Staff News New Baby The stork made a delivery to the Ndunge family when they were blessed with a baby boy in early much this year. Congratulations to Mrs Ndunge and her family. New Staff Richard Varha has received 7 new teachers who join our staff as from March. Mrs Memani will teach English and Life Orientation Miss Njunguza will teach Mathematics, Physical Sciences and Natural Sciences Mr Mbonda will teach Mathematics and Electrical Technology Miss Nontso will teach Mathematics and Economics Mrs Sikwebu will teach Economics and Creative Arts Mr Manana will teach Mathematics and Mechanical Technology Mrs Ngani will teach IsiXhosa and Creative Arts Page 2

3 VOLUME 4, I SSUE 1 Page 3 Olympiads English Olympiad On Tuesday 3 March 2015, 25 learners from Grade wrote the De Beers English Olympiad. The theme of the Olympiad was Stories of Mzansi The Olympiad was very challenging and we still await the results of this Olympiad as the scripts are marked in Grahamstown. Computer Olympiad On Monday 16 March 2013, a group of 30 learners wrote the National Computer Olympiad which was facilitated by Mr Mqalo, the Lab Facilitator. The Olympiad tested logic, rather than actual computer skill. The results were as follows: 1st in Grade 8 - Siphumle Ngam 1st in Grade 9 - Sakhumzi Gladile 1st in Grade 10 - Solomzi Gladile 1st in Grade 11 - Xabiso Mzabane 1st in Grade 12 - Simnikiwe Mbanga 1st in the school - Simnikiwe Mbanga(12C) 2nd in the school - Saziso Gxobole (12C) 3rd in the school - Xabiso Mzabane (11D) South African Mathematics Olympiad On 12 March 2015, 100 Richard Varha learners wrote the South African Mathematics Foundation Olympiad, sponsored by Harmony Mathematics. The tests were very tough and 2 learners: Aviwe Koli (Grade 12D) and Themba Malusi (Grade 11D) managed to make it through to the second round. The second round tests were written on 14 May National Science Olympiad 30 Learners wrote the National Science Olympiad which took place on Thursday 5 March learners wrote the Physical Science paper and 15 wrote the Life Sciences/ Biology paper. We eagerly await the results. Tablets for Top Learners Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University in collaboration with Old Mutual donated tablets to the top performing Grade 10, 11 and 12 maths learners. These tablets contain extra notes and study aids to help learners improve their maths studying.

4 Representative Council of Learners (RCL) The RCL is a body of students that represents the learners needs. The RCL for 2015 was elected as follows: President: Lwanele Dyani (12C) Deputy President: Thobani Ndonga (12C) Secretary : Ziyathandwa Goduka (12A) Deputy Secretary: Siphelele Kalawe (10A) Treasurer: Lukholo Madikane (10E) Education Committee: Zandisiwe Bevu (11A) Entertainment Committee: Baxolise Gqokoma (12B) Arts and Culture Committee: Onela Nokele (9A) Health and Wellness Committee: Sesethu Pasman (9B) Fundraising: Esethu Dyantyi (10B) Sports : Thembela Makasi (11B) Valentine s Day On 13 February 2015, the RCL and Matric Dance Committee organised a Valentine s Day Bash for fundraising purposes. The event was a huge success and all learners took part, looking very gorgeous in their red and white outfits. Lots of eats and other treats were also sold for fundraising. Page 4

5 Sports Sifunda Kunye Sports Tournament On 7 March 2015Richard Varha netball, soccer and ladies soccer teams participated in the Sifunda Kunye sports tournament. We played against Xolani, St Matthews and ZK Matthews. Richard Varha ended up coming second in soccer and first in ladies soccer. Sports Matches vs Kuyasa SSS On 4 March 2015 we played matches against Kuyasa SSS. The matches were very tight but we managed to get results as follows: Rugby: won Ladies Soccer: drew 1-1 Netball: won Soccer: Won 2-1 Sports Matches vs Luvumelwano SSS On 14 March 2015 we played matches against Luvumelwano SSS from Sterkspurit. The matches were very tight but we managed to get results as follows: Rugby: won Ladies Soccer: drew 1-1 Netball: won Soccer: Won 2-1 Page 5

The results were as follows: Ladies Soccer: drew 3-3 Netball: lost Soccer: drew 1-1 Cricket vs. Dumalisile - Richard Varha scored 151 runs in 15 overs. Best batsman were Loyiso Soldati 85 runs not out, best bowlers were Kalawe 2 wickets for 9 rums. vs. Mzontsundu - Richard Varha scored 203 runs after 20 overs. Best batsman Loyiso Soldati 68 runs, best bowler Thobani Ndonga 4 wickets for 14 runs. vs. Archie Velile - Richard Varha scored 135 runs in 15 overs. Best batsman was Malizole Manika 31 runs not out and Fani 28 runs not out. vs. Toise - Richard Varha scored 131 runs for 15 overs. Best all-rounder was Loyiso Soldati Page 6
