2 Welcome to our Boarders! PREP BOARDERS ARRIVAL GRADE 8 BOARDERS Last Friday, 11 January, we were excited to welcome our Grade 8 Boarders on to campus! Prior to meeting up with the rest of their Grade, our boarders spent some time settling into their rooms before starting their orientation weekend and saying goodbye to their parents.

3 Grade 8 Arrival and Orientation Weekend The Grade 8s started off their year with an introductory weekend spent at the College run by the prefects and Grade 8 staff. The boys were taught about leadership and team work by reverend Kevin Robertson via a host of activities and talks. The importance of our College s values and principles were ingrained on the boys minds as they made their way home or remained behind in the boarding establishment. Our 2019 prefect body played an integral role in the weekend and insured a strong bond was made with the Grade 8s before school officially started on the Monday. 4 First Day of School! JUNIOR PRIMARY FIRST DAY Big hugs were given to parents and teachers on Monday morning as both our new and returning Junior Primary boys got ready to tackle their first day of school for 2019! Our matric prefects also visited the Junior Primary on Monday morning to wish the boys all the best and to give a special welcome to our boys starting Grade 1.

5 SCRUMMIES FIRST DAY We're not sure who had a better first day of school on Monday... Our boys in Scrummies who got to run around on the playground with the prefects? Or our prefects who got to start off their matric year acting like little boys again? Either way, it was a great first day of school at St Charles College! Junior Primary Reading Our Grade 3s spent some time earlier this week reading with the boys who have just started Grade 1. What a wonderful welcome to the Junior Primary!

6 Crickets News St Charles College 1 st XI started the year perfectly with a clean sweep of victories at the Grey High Cricket Festival in Port Elizabeth. Playing against local Eastern Cape opposition on the first three days, the Saints had a good win against Framesby, followed by an exciting declaration game against Pearson and then a comfortable win against Muir College. In the Pearson game, new 1 st XI captain, Wessly Madhevere, took five wickets to help his team bowl Pearson out for 90, only for Saints to be bowled out for the same score. With plenty of overs left in the day and Saints needing 5 wickets in the second innings, Pearson managed to get to 58/5, leaving Saints 8 overs to chase the 59 run required to win. Playing for the draw was never on the cards and Clive Madande got early momentum going for the Saints with some huge sixes, supported by Humphrey van der Merwe who played quality attacking cricket to get the visitors over the line with 2 balls to spare. The Saints left their best cricket for the last day with a nail-biting 7 run win against Grey College. Losing the toss and being asked to bat first, the Saints got off to a solid start in the first six overs being 40/1, Clive Madande striking the ball cleanly. In the middle overs the scoreboard kept ticking with good running between wickets and a stylish innings by Jason Login, who set the platform for his team to accelerate towards the back-end of the innings. In the end the 131/6 was a good effort on a slowish, turning wicket. Grey got off to a flyer, scoring at 10 an over until the spinners were introduced which caused the run rate to slow substantially. Leg spinner, Jason Login, turned the game in the Saints favour with a hatrick in the 13 th over and Cameron Spangenberg was the best seamer on the day, returning figures of 3/27 including the key wicket of the Grey College captain, bowled when he was well set on 32. The Saints captain, Wessly Madhevere, set good fields and his bowling changes were executed smartly to keep the pressure on Grey. Madhevere bowled the final over with the men from Bloemfontein needing 19 to win, the boundary only came off the fourth delivery but it was too little too late and St Charles College won by 7 runs. 7 Basketball News from the Holidays Nkosi Dlamini excelled in Botswana over the holidays, representing South Africa U16 basketball at the AUSC Region 5 Youth Games. Nkosi was named captain of the team and they made it through to the finals, eventually going down to Angola. Nkosi received his silver medal in Sports Assembly today and as mentioned by Mr Irons, we are very proud of his achievements on the basketball court but equally proud of the work ethic he displays in the classroom. The balance between academics and co-curricular activities is important and Nkosi, along with a great number of Saints boys, are shining examples of getting this right. As Saints we work hard and we play hard! Well done, Nkosi.
