SEPTEMBER 2018 WEEK 10 TERM 3 ST CHARLES COLLEGE Dear Saints Parents We have reached the end of our third term and we would like to wish you all a safe and fantastic holiday! It has been a busy term on campus and we are so proud of the hard work and commitment that all the boys across the five schools have shown both in the classroom and on the sports field! IN THIS EDITION: Speech Night 2018 Page 2 New Boys Weekend Page 4

Speech Night 2018 The highlight of the St Charles College calendar is our annual Speech Night. The Indoor Centre was completely transformed into a beautiful venue, fit for an evening celebrating all that the St Charles College community, and in particular the boys, have achieved over the past year. The Matric class of 2018 took pride of place in front of the stage, savouring their final formal function in their schooling careers. One of the highlights of the evening was the speech given by 2018 Head Boy, Matthew Mortimer. Seeing the College through the eyes of the Head Boy is an insightful experience and it is wonderful to hear of the memories he will cherish of his 12 years at St Charles College. The announcement of the 2019 prefect body was one of the most anticipated items on the programme. Congratulations to all those who were selected to be Prefects and Council Leader. The top five selected to represent the College as Head Boy and Deputies are Kyle Reid (Head Boy), Brayden Sampson, Zukile Mbuli, JJ Foord and Guy Church. The evening concluded with a rousing rendition of the College s school song that could be heard well beyond the walls of the Indoor Centre.

New Boys Weekend Now in its 11 th year, it has been over a decade that young men entering the Senior School have been starting their High School journeys by making friends and memories at the Annual New Boys Weekend. I am always so impressed with the efforts of our Grade 7 parents who prioritise this weekend and realise its importance in establishing a great foundation to their son s Grade 8 year. The weekend has a specific intention and that is for all our new boys to make friends. For many of these boys it means returning in 2019 with a support structure already in place. Familiar faces and facilities are one less thing to stress about when stepping into our Senior School. On Saturday afternoon, our Principal welcomed the Matric class of 2023 to the College. After a wardrobe change and a quick tour of the College, Vuka Fitness, a local boot camp company, entertained our new boys and Grade 11 helpers on Old Orchards with some high intensity team games. The Colleges dining room played host to a scrumptious dinner followed by an evening s laughter and entertainment at the pool, with our annual new boy s talent show. On Sunday morning, the boys attended a Chapel service after breakfast and then spent the morning having fun in their groups on the campus. By lunchtime on Sunday, the boys had competed in basketball, football, rounder s and hockey, no scores tallied but participation and smiles noted! All that remained was the singing of the College s school song and farewell but not for long. My sincere thanks to all the St Charles College staff members who so willingly assisted in this most worthwhile event. To the Colleges Hospitality team for their excellent catering, the Estate staff for their compliance to my demands and the superb men of Grade 11, for without them this weekend would not have run as successfully as it did! Mr Dean Riley (Marketing Manager)

Basketball vs Clifton College After winning the Spring Basketball League the Saints 1st team carried that momentum into their season opener against Clifton College. Clifton looked like a much improved team from the first term, showing good ball movement on offense and playing a tight 2-3 zone and an aggressive man-to-man defence. St Charles College, however, through disciplined execution of their offensive systems and under the guidance of their point guard Nkosinathi Dlamini (11pts 2 assists) were able to take advantage of their superior post play with James Laynes (18pts) dominating the Clifton posts. Defensively, St Charles College were able to hold Clifton to 27 points not allowing open shots and controlling the defensive boards, securing 41 defensive rebounds (Kallum Bloem 9 rebounds). The strength and depth of the St Charles College bench played a huge factor in allowing Coach Holcomb to constantly have fresh legs on the court maintaining their defensive pressure on the visitors securing 16 steals. In the end St Charles College ran out comfortable winners Mr Craig Gilchrist

Cricket vs Clifton College The 1 st XI travelled to Riverside Sports Club for their first fixture of the summer. The Saints XI are on the back of a good run of form having won all their games at the Independent Schools Festival and then a comprehensive win against Cornwall Hill a fortnight ago. The team would have preferred more practice matches after games against Northwood and Maritzburg College were called off due to inclement weather. As it is, SCC won the toss and elected to bat first. They got off to a good start reaching 28/0 in the first 7 overs. The 8 th over, however, bought about the first wicket after a change of bowling. Clifton went on to take a further 5 wickets in the game and St Charles College were bowled out for 138 inside 50 overs. Poor shot selection, excellent bowling and an inability to absorb pressure were SCC s downfall and 138 after winning the toss was a disappointing effort and left SCC well behind the 8 ball at the half way stage. Clifton came out hard with the bat hoping that a pinch hitter might end the game early. Some well-disciplined bowling saw SCC fight back well and had Clifton reeling at 40/4. The pitch was offering the same assistance as the first innings, so SCC always felt like they were in the game. Frustratingly SCC couldn t hold onto their catches, dropping 5 in all, and this allowed Clifton s star batsman, Brown, to reach his half century. Shortly after, however, SCC took their 4 th chance and once 5 wickets had gone down the partnership of Wessly Madhevere and Travis Dutton ensured a tight ending, but in truth, the Clifton batsman struggled with Dutton and Madhevere s accuracy. It was a nail-biting end with Clifton needing just 6 runs to win, but Madhevere sealed the win for SCC with a superb delivery, removing the bails of Clifton s no.11. The pick of the bowlers was undoubtedly, Dutton. His 4/28 was a man of the match performance and must be applauded for his leadership on the day. Thank you to Clifton for hosting us and for contributing to such a wonderful game of school boy cricket. It was a great opening day of cricket to start the summer season. Mr Murray Cole-Edwardes

Water Polo vs Clifton College Saints Summer Hospitality It has become customary on game days during the summer season to have bring and braai facilities available at the Coach House. The intention is to create a lunch time option for all parents and supporters to socialize in a relaxed environment on campus. This applies mainly to teams that play all day cricket; however, parents of all teams (cricket and basketball) are welcome to join in. Each week the Saints Sports Department will extend the invitation to our opposition so that they can inform their parent community. General details are as follows: - Fires will be provided (these will be lit at approximately midday each week) - Refreshments will be available for purchase - SCC will provide salads, rolls and disposable plates. Please bring your own meat, cutlery, braai tongs etc. There will be some seating but please feel free to bring your Camp master chairs. - Please note that the Coach House will close after lunch in accordance with the playing times We encourage you to join in on Saturdays and get to know the other parents in your son s team. We also look forward to creating a welcoming and hospitable environment on campus for all our visitors. For parents who live further away and are not able to support every weekend, you can follow sports updates on the twitter

Hockey vs Pelham and Ridge Last Friday afternoon, the U9 age group played against Ridge Junior Primary School. The U9Bs played in an exciting fixture which ended in a draw and the U9A team managed to go one better in beating their Ridge opponents, 3-0. On Saturday morning the remaining Prep hockey teams played against Pelham. The U10Ds finished the season strong with a 5-1 victory. The U11D team played in exciting match which saw the Saints boys ending up 1-0 winners while the U11Bs were well worth their 2-0 win. The U11As played entertaining hockey on their way to a 4-1 victory. Both the 4 th team and the Colts ended the term on a high with the 4ths winning 3-1 and the Colts winning 1-0 by the final whistle. The Prep 1 st side played some riveting hockey on their way to comprehensively beating the Pelham 1 st team. The Prep 1 st team boys played as a team and moved the ball around with ease. Well done to all the Saints hockey teams this past term on some great hockey performances and results. Mr Chad Barron Prep Tennis News On Thursday afternoon, the Prep tennis teams played against various schools from around the Midlands region. The Saints U11B team convincingly beat their Athlone counterparts 27 games to 1 while the U11As also notched up another win, beating Cowan House The SCC 4 th team beat the New Hanover 3 rd team and the Prep 1 st side remained unbeaten throughout the term, when they won their final league fixture against their New Hanover opposition 28 games to 8. Well done to all the Saints tennis boys on a fantastic season. Mr Chad Barron Bass Fishing League The second annual SCC Bass Fishing League finally began this last Sunday. Having had the first three outings cancelled due to inclement weather, the staff and boys were keen to hit the water. A group of 10 arrived at Albert Falls Dam just after sunrise and the fishing began well, with a 1.8kg and 1kg bass being landed in the opening minutes. The wind, being our tireless foe, picked up just after 8am which made fishing difficult for the boys on kayaks. Initially, this didn t stop more fish being caught. Mark Daniel Meter did well, managing a full tally of 5 fish. The spoils though, belonged to Grade 8 newcomer Peter Adeogun. Fishing for his very first time, young Peter hooked and landed a 4kg beast. Congratulations Peter! By mid-morning, the wind overcame the boys willpower, and the outing was brought to an end. Mr Richard Randelhoff

Inter House Water Polo Earlier this week, our Senior School participated in their Inter House Water Polo competition. Well done to Smith House who placed first! Prep Boys vs Staff Hockey To end off the Prep Hockey season, our Prep 1 st team took on the staff in a friendly match! After a fun and exciting match the staff walked away with bragging rights, winning 6-4.

Technical Facility Earlier this week we visited our newly built Technical Facility to see what the boys have recently been working on. Pictured alongside is just one of a series of practical projects that Erich Ortmann (Grade 11) and Johandré Marx (Grade 11) have been busy with. They were tasked with constructing a utility table out of multi plywood and with a granite finish. Each of the boys was also required to design a scaled working drawing of the utility table before beginning the construction. Well done to both Erich and Johandré for their excellent work on this project! Grade 11 Chemistry UKZN Trip On 18 September, the Grade 11 Chemistry class took a trip to the University of KwaZulu-Natal to visit the Chemistry Department. The class was given a presentation on the structure of a science degree and other information on university life. The boys were also given the opportunity to hear about current research in chemistry as well as different job opportunities available in the field. The class was then treated to a chemistry magic show which involved lots of explosions and colours, before being taken on a tour of the department and shown different equipment that they are currently studying in class. The trip ended with making ice-cream from liquid nitrogen and eating it, of course. Dr Kate Akerman

Blood Donation Clinic On the last day of term the South African National Blood Service visited St Charles College giving staff and boys in the Senior School the chance to donate blood and help save a life! Senior Primary Words Week Over the course of the week our Senior Primary School held their annual Words Week, where this year the focus was on a celebration of Heritage.

Scrummies Outings this week Our Grade 00 boys explored the Botanical Gardens Our Grade 0 boys visited the Umgeni Nature Reserve Some of the activities during their adventure to the Umgeni Nature Reserve included a nature scavenger hunt, looking for water creatures with no bones to assess the quality of the stream water and of course having a snack alongside the zebras!

Friendly Lamb Visits Scrummies Educate and Fascinate Ahead of Heritage Day, our boys in the Junior Primary were visited by Yo Entertainment for a fun and interactive learning experience! Don t forget to swipe your MySchool and Makro cards. It is an easy way to raise funds for the College. TUCK SHOP HELPERS NEEDED The tuck shop needs your help.
