1 ISSUE #17 17 AUGUST Circulation is currently 281 Hockey Season Awards Function and Fundraiser 18 September h00 in the Mears Centre - RBHS The Hockey Committee will be organising an Awards Evening which will be combined with a Fundraiser and a sit down meal which will comply with all religious dietary requirements. Captains of all teams will be asked to prepare and give a Captain s Report setting out the highlights and amusing incidents from the past season. It is anticipated that there will be 3 awards per team (categories to be announced soon) in the form of small trophies. Parents are requested to advise the Committee whether anyone would be willing to contribute towards the cost of these awards, and we are also looking for donations to be raffled on the evening in aid of Hockey funds so as to inject an element of fun into the evening. (Contact Cindy Giger on ) The cost of tickets will be announced soon and it would be appreciated if all Hockey Players and their Parents could pencil in this date in their diaries so as to ensure that we have a full house attendance. Cindy Giger Chairperson Rondebosch Hockey Parents Committee Bosch U14 Players well represented in the W P Disa Team at the IPT from 9-11 August 2009 in Grahamstown Western Province U14 Disas (comprising 6 Bosch players) won the Gold medal at the regional inter-provincial meet against Teams from Border, Eastern Province, SWD and Boland, recently completed in Grahamstown. 2 The results: WP Disas Border - Won 2:1 SWD - Won 4:0 WP North: Won 6:2 EP - Won 1:0 Boland B: Drew 1:1 Final: Beat Boland A, via golden goal rule during extra time with Rondebosch's own Kyle Drury scoring the all important winner. Well done boys. Knock Out Competition - Bosch U14A Date: 03 August 2009 Played Bishops away from home in the semi-finals of the knock out. What a thriller with Rondebosch boys still dominating for large parts of the match. With seconds to go and literally off the last play of the game, we finally scored from a shorty with Zubayr Hamza back sticking a ball into the net. Final result 1-0. Date: 05/08/2009 Played SACS away from home. Game started the way it ended in the first round with numerous attacking forays by our boys, but a combination of great goalkeeping and poor finishing let us down in the first half. A game of deja vu until Nick Cotchobos got the opening goal and Zubayr finished it off to run out comfortable 2-0 winners. We should have scored many more to accurately reflect the days play. Come on Senior Teams lets support our U14A Side at their upcoming games. As a side note, we have an under 14 team that is fixtured to play 2 remaining league matches: Wynberg and Bishops. They are also in the finals of the knock out round after beating Bishops in the semi-finals. Would it not be a great gesture if we could canvass our fellow hockey seniors to come out and support this unbeaten team. It would mean the world to them if the 1st team and other seniors could come out in numbers and provide some moral support in the last game or two of the Season. Nizaam Hamza

4 RBHS U14A vs Wynberg - RBHS won 2-0 RBHS U14B vs Wynberg - RBHS won 2-1 RBHS U14C vs Wynberg - RBHS lost 0 1 RBHS U19A vs Wynberg Knock Out Monday 17/08/2009- RBHS lost 0-2 Rondebosch 1 st Team vs. Wynberg 1 st Team 14/08/2009 In Friday night the 1 st hockey side were up for an epic battle against our arch-rivals Wynberg. We arrived at Wynberg astro with the knowledge that the game was going to be tough and that a win was going to go to the side that performed better on the day. Wynberg dominated the first 10 minutes of play as we found our feet after our 2 week break from hockey matches. They scored their first goal off a drag-flick short corner. We kept composed and stepped up our game to equalize 5 minutes before halftime. Cole Milton slapped the ball in and Peter Schwellnus scored a deflection goal. We came out firing in the second half and dominated play with numerous chances and near misses but were unable to score. Wynberg then scored off a counter attack and the score was 2-1. We then started firing and attacked there D numerous times but were unable to finish it off with a goal. We lost the hard-fought game 2-1. Peter Schwellnus - Captain Rondebosch 2 nd Team vs. Wynberg 2 nd Team 14/08/2009 This week we were really keen to get our second win this season vs. Wynberg. The game started at 17:35 at the Wynberg astro and there was definitely going to be some vibe under the lights. The game naturally started off pretty fiercely but we were always going to be too strong for this Wynberg team after beating them last term 2-0. We converted our first short corner with a bit of a scramble at the 'p' spot. An amazing finish by Jono Cox saw us go 2-0 up at the break. Wynberg came out strongly in the second half and really gave us a good fight. Our team has relied heavily on our defence this year and they haven t let us down once. After continuous pressure from Wynberg, we finally got a decent counter attack and scored off it from an unusual source: Greg Docherty. It just shows that all of our players can actually play anywhere (except Nathan Richardson). The game ended 3-0 to Rondebosch with another deserved win. Aidan Morris Rondebosch 3rd Team vs. Wynberg 3rd Team 15/08/2009 This past weekend the 3rd side played against one of our strongest oppositions, Wynberg. The first half was all Wynberg, they scored two goals. The second half was all Bosch, with two superb goals by Greg Burman keping us in the match. The team showed character and pulled through drawing the match 2-2. We are happy with our second half performance, and look forward to our last match against Bishops. Sebastian Bosman

We played on Wynberg s Astro. I will be honest it was not the greatest game that we have ever played. At half time we were three nil down. We swapped keepers at this point and Caelan Currie managed to keep the score the same. Esmond Schnehage U16C Captain Rondebosch U16D Team vs. Wynberg U16D Team 14/08/2009 Both RBHS and Wynberg played very well and were equally matched with possession and shots at goal, Wynberg managed to use their opportunities better than we could and were two goals up at half time. We played well in the second half and kept the ball out of our goals but unfortunately couldn't score before the end whistle. Caelan Curry Rondebosch U16E Team vs. Wynberg U16E Team 14/08/2009 Rondebosch U14A Team vs. Wynberg U14A Team 14/08/2009 The u14 A s played against Wynberg on Friday at Wynberg. The game started with absolutely no enthusiasm at all from both teams. Bosch dominated the first 10 minutes with Nick Schoenegeval scoring a great goal from a very difficult angle. At the end of the first half Bosch were leading 1-0. We were asleep for start of the second half but Nick was able to sneak another goal for the team. Rondebosch won the game 2-0 but we need to take our opportunities and play with way more intensity in our next game. Justin Prins

Meanwhile our shots at goal weren t good enough for their keeper. We have been concentrating a lot on tackling and hitting. We should also practice our set pieces as we gave many free hits away. Our game started off well and went up from there. We lost our game in the last three minutes when we had a bad set piece just outside their D to give them a counter attack to allow them to score, unfortunately. Shayan Parbhoo
