Newsletter No: 7 14 November 1 st XI vs SACS Bergvliet T20 Final (09 November 2012) Rondebosch were put into bat and, as usual, there was a little assistance for the bowlers with the new white ball. Keagan Smith (16) and Matthew Christensen took their time in seeing off the new ball and then began to take the attack to the SACS bowlers. Zubayr Hamza joined Christensen at the crease in the ninth over and the pair put on a partnership of 58 off 44 balls: characterized by excellent running between wickets and some crisply executed boundary hitting. Christensen was eventually out for a run-a-ball 45 and Hamza ended the innings on 40 off just 27 deliveries. The total of 131 for 4 was always going to be a challenging one. Riaz Sader s off spin and some prodigious lateral movement from Dayyaan Galliem put the SACS openers under pressure from the start. The introduction of Ryan Klein (4 for 7 off 3) into the attack in the seventh over brought the breakthrough with the last ball of his over, to have SACS well behind the required run rate having scored only 17 off the first seven overs. Klein s next over saw wickets with his first two balls - thus completely a memorable hat-trick for the Grade 9 speedster. A further wicket from Klein and the introduction of fellow Grade 9 leg-spinner, Junaid Dawood, effectively ended the SACS run chase. Dawood dismissed the dangerous James Williams and then ran through the lower order to also bag a four wicket haul. SACS were bowled out in the sixteenth over for a total of 74 and Rondebosch had successfully defended the title they had won against Wynberg in last year s final. Celebrating another trophy at Bergvliet

1 st XI v Bishops (Declaration) Seldom in sport is there ever a contest that was quite so one-sided that ends in a draw as there was at Cricket A at Rondebosch on Saturday. Rondebosch won the toss and elected to bat and from the outset the openers, Keagan Smith and Matthew Christensen, appeared comfortable at the crease. Bishops opened the bowling with left arm spinner, Digby Harding somewhat negating the effect of the new ball on proceedings. Assisted by some poor catching from the visitors - both survived relatively easy chances early on - the pair took control of the situation, both batters rotated strike well and never failed to take on the spinners when they felt it necessary. Keagan Smith departed for 60 shortly after the hundred appeared on the board - caught on the midwicket boundary - and that was the last success that Bishops would enjoy with the ball. Hayes van der Berg got settled and then joined in the run fest as Matthew played the anchor role. Christensen went past his hundred with a trademark drive over the covers to record his maiden century for the 1 st XI off the bowling of Harding and the innings ended with the score on 235 for 1. Van der Berg was not out on 62 and the partnership had added 132 runs. The Bishops innings started in the worst possible way for the visitors with Tim Westwood being dismissed first ball, and despite 34 from James Baikoff, they were in all sorts of trouble at tea with the score on 43 for 4 and soon after that 47 for 5. Ty Wills then joined Kyle Jacobs at the wicket and the pair set about saving the game. Jacobs used up 56 balls for his four runs before falling to Junaid Dawood. Daniel Lombard then joined Wills and the pair were resolute in their defence. The Rondebosch attack, missing three of their provincial seamers due to injury, couldn t break the defences and the match ended in a draw with Bishops scoring 68 for 6 after 60 overs. Wills in particular showed great determination to finish not out on 2 off 108 balls. Matthew Christensen goes over the top to reach his hundred

2 nd XI vs Bishops We arrived at Bishops with a sense of sadness and anticipation. Sadness as we would be saying goodbye to our matrics, while the anticipation came from the thought of another contest with Bishops. This would be the last game for Themba Bosch, 2 nds captain and Nick Salonen. The mood was relaxed and confident. Themba lost the toss and Bishops elected to bat first. Prashant and Themba s opening spell was tight and yielded the first wicket with only 18 runs on the board. The sense of achievement on getting their first wicket was soon replaced by a little desperation as the next Bishops batting pair put on a partnership of 74. The wicket was not easy early on, but generally it was a totally flat deck. The Bishops opener Luke Scofield survived a couple of scares early on in his innings to go on to score a very mature 82. As the morning wore on the sun baked the pitch dry, which resulted in an extremely tame pitch giving the bowlers absolutely no assistance. The Bishops batsmen kept everything out and going to tea, we thought we had them contained to an acceptable run rate. Bishops upped the run rate after tea punishing our poor deliveries. The first team oval at Bishops is unforgiving and gives one value for your shot. The hot conditions added plenty of speed to the outfield, making scoring a breeze for the batmen and score they did. Bishops went into lunch in a very strong position with only two wickets down. Their confidence was high and chatter was one of excitement. After lunch their intentions were clear and the run rate escalated with the Bishops batsmen scoring at will. The sun had baked our fielders as well and we just did not respond to the Bishops batting onslaught. Bishops ended their 65 overs with a massive 234/4. Prashant Makan was our most economical bowler with figures of 0/17 in eight overs. Bishops were in an obvious confident mood and as our opening batsmen took the field they were greeted by some aggressive chatter. Nick Salonen and Stef Filippi buckled down for a 36 run opening stand. Nick was unfortunate, but was given out LBW without offering a shot. Tayo Walburgh then entered the fray. Stef and Tayo then proceeded to hit the Bishops bowlers to all parts with some truly wonderful stroke-play. The chatter soon died down in the field and the mood in the Bosch camp picked up, as we maintained the run rate to make a game of it. Stef went on to score a very well-played 59. Tayo carried on with his wonderful form of late and slayed the Bishops bowlers at will, going on to make his ton ending on 103 out LBW. It was left then to Michael Cursons to take us home to victory scoring an unbeaten 32. The maturity of the Bosch batsmen, especially towards the end of the game, was something to behold. As it always is, victory against Bishops, at Bishops, was extremely satisfying. Bosch ended on 236/5, winning by five wickets. We would like to thank Client for all the hard work he has put in to make the 2 nds such a successful unit and to the departing matrics we say Altius et Latius.

3 rd XI vs Bishops U17A Kieryn finally won his first toss of the year, and then decided to break away from the usual win the toss and bat first recipe and sent Bishops in to bat. He used his local knowledge of our home pitch - it tends to have a bit of bounce early in the morning, and then gets flatter and straighter as the day goes on. When the Bishops opening partnership reached over 40 runs by the fourteenth over, he might have thought he had made a mistake. However, it was at this point that he turned to our trump card for most of the season: our left arm spin attack. The wickets started tumbling and only 11 overs later, Ewald Rist had taken three wickets, Riley Louw ran a batsman out, and Jordan Corfe helped himself to five wickets. With the score on 91/9 after 25 overs, it was all over bar the shouting. Unfortunately, the focus dropped slightly and a resilient partnership of 41 runs for the tenth wicket frustrated the team until the thirtieth over. Kieryn sent in his third left arm spinner and Aidan Child made no mistake in ending the Bishops innings on 132 all out. James Donald and Chad Muller started our run chase by batting at almost seven runs per over until James was bowled out by one of the best balls he must have faced this year. The rest of the match saw another few wickets fall, but every batsman simply rotated the strike to keep Chad on strike. He eventually went out for 53 off only 60 balls. At 108/5 in the tweny-fifth over, and keeping the collapse of the tail against Paul Roos in mind, Justin Kraak and Jordan Corfe set about making sure that we did not lose any further wickets, but that we secured the win that was ours for the taking throughout the entire morning. It was with great relief that Justin Kraak hit the winning runs in the thirty-first over to give us a well deserved win by five wickets over Bishops. The Kings XI ended the season unbeaten against all the other Southern Suburbs Boys schools! Our two Matrics, Captain Kieryn Thompson and Justin Kraak, as well as Troy Lawrence who will be leaving us for KES at the end of the year got their chances to contribute to their last matches for Bosch. Kieryn must be congratulated for leading this young team with so much passion for Bosch and for the game. Bishops U17A: 132 all out (29.4 overs) Ewald Rist 3/37 (7 overs) Jordan Corfe 5/21 (7 overs) Bosch 3 rd XI: 136/5 (30.2 overs) Chad Muller 53 Bosch won by 5 wickets

U15A vs Bishops In this declaration over match against Bishops, Rondebosch lost the toss and were asked to field first. The anticipation was palpable for the whole week leading up to the game, and the boys worked really hard in preparation for this last fixture in their outstanding season. The Bishops openers, Conrad and Pithy, started confidently. They hit sixes and fours over mid-wicket and square leg as the Bosch openers bowled too short on a flat pitch. While new ball opener, Ryan Klein, was again on duty with the 1 st team, it was left to star man, Eddie Bester (1 for 16 off 8 overs), to make the breakthrough and remove the Bishops danger man, Conrad, for 33 from 25 balls. Pithy (48) continued to bat nicely. The score was 92 for 2 at the morning tea break. After the first session, it was looking like a long day in the field, chasing leather for the Bosch outfit. Luckily, this turned out to not be the case. Leg-spinner John Chubby Currie bowled the spell of his season as he took 6 wickets for 1 run (at one stage) to annihilate the Bishops batting line-up. Bishops were all out for 151. The Bosch openers, Alli and Haffejee, started well as they knocked off the required runs against a very decent opening bowling attack. Ali went for 9, but Hafejee continued to marshal the innings with maturity until he fell on 37, driving a full toss to cover. Bishops came back into the game with the removal of captain Commins (8) to the off-spinner Jacobs - the situation called for the Bosch middle order to fire, and someone to lead us to victory. Nick Stander (52*) did just that, as he showed patience and aggression in what was a fine innings. He was accompanied first with a very responsible innings from Matthew Visser (21) and then Nick Witten (10*), who dug in to lead us to an impressive win in the 46 th over. It was a decent and well-deserved victory for Rondebosch, who won by 6 wickets. And all in all, a good end to a magnificent season, which saw us playing 26 games, winning 22, drawing 2 and losing only 2. Bishops all out in 33.1 overs John Currie 6/19 off 6.1 overs Murray Commins 2/27 off 4 overs RBHS for 4 from 46.4 overs Nick Stander 52* (6 x 4s, 1 x 6) Mikael Haffejee 37 (5 x 4s) Bosch won by 6 wickets U15B vs Bishops On Saturday RBHS U15B played at Bishops in their final U15 game of the year. It was expected to be an entertaining match, but unfortunately did not live up to the hype. We won the toss and sent Bishops into bat. Bishops lost an early wicket but from that point took early control of the game. RBHS could not find a breakthrough as Bishops paced their innings perfectly. Bishops batted with ease, finishing on a formidable 165/3 in 35 overs. We got off to a shaky start, losing two early wickets. With the score at 18/2, Rhys Wilmore scored a quick 27 before being dismissed. Wickets fell at crucial times and RBHS were never able to take control. Craig Souter batted through the innings with no real support: scoring 41. RBHS could only manage 114 all out. The RBHS boys were of course gutted, as they were comprehensively beaten by the better team on the day. Hard lessons learned, but a good season for the U15B team.

U15D vs Jan van Riebeeck Rondebosch Boys U15D played Jan van Riebeeck at home on Friday afternoon. After losing the toss, Jan van Riebeeck chose to bat first. The opening bowlers bowled well but with the short boundary it meant that runs were flowing. Jan van Riebeeck took full advantage and scored boundary after boundary. Even wickets couldn't stem the runs. JVR ended on 175 after 20 overs. With the bat we started strongly as the openers peppered the short boundary: runs came easily, but after wickets fell, it slowed down. But John van Blerk and Matthew Twigg really put on a show: it was raining fours and sixes. They did great to get very close to the target, but they ran out of balls ending on 153. Jan van Riebeeck batted first and scored 175 in 20 overs Toufeeq Khan 3/23 RBHS replied with 153 for 6 in 20 overs Mathew Twigg 56 John van Blerk 42 RBHS lost by 25 runs U14A vs Bishops Rondebosch comprehensively beat Bishops for the second time by eight wickets. Bishops won the toss and elected to bat on a flat track. The key words for the week of training were: Taking responsibility and never giving up. The boys did themselves proud and lived up to this motto. Key to the success was the disciplined bowling and pressure built from both ends by the bowlers. This had also been a focus for the term. Mike Movavana was able to attack with his aggressive pace (3 for 36). Max Pike coming back from injury, complemented Mike, with some sustained accurate bowling, picking up 2 for 10. Hamza Salojee took a sharp chance in the slips to remove the dangerous opener, De Beer for four runs, to give Rondebosch the early initiative. Keagan Collier, Hamza Salojee and Sammy Cragg all got into the act and kept the pressure on, to pave the way for the spinners of Josh Isaacs (1 for 11), Suhail White(1-26) and Kyle Smith(3-50), to attack. A good mix of pace and spin finished the Bishops tail, resulting in them being bowled out for 161 in 58 overs. Rondebosch lost an early wicket but Bishops had no answer to a match-winning second wicket stand, of 133 by Gavin Kaplan and Kyle Smith. Kyle Smith showed good concentration and maturity, to score 38 not out, and provided a perfect foil for the devastating hitting of Gavin Kaplan, who was unfortunate to go out on 93 - thus missing out on a third century for the year. After tea, the writing was on the wall and Bishops capitulated allowing Rondebosch to score at five runs an over with Suhail White (15 not out) and Kyle Smith stamping their authority on the match. On reflection the boys deserved this win and must be complemented on their good work ethic throughout the term. The stats for the year showed that of the 24 matches played, 15 were won, three drawn and six lost. Considering that the boys play some of the top sides in the country, week in and week out, including local U15 sides, the boys can be proud of these results.

U14B vs Bishops The U14B s played Bishops in an eagerly anticipated Day/Night encounter on Tuesday, 8 November. Having been convincingly beaten in the first term the team was eager to put in a good performance. We won the toss and chose to bat as is customary in Day/Night fixtures at Bishops. We got off to a slow start but did not lose any wickets before James van Rensburg was run out for a well-played 22. We continued to crawl along after losing another wicket and reached drinks at 41/2 after 20 overs. After drinks the game changed, as Rene du Toit came out with a much more aggressive approach and managed to release the pressure by finding the boundary. Devon Arendse provided valuable support as the partnership managed to get back on track to set a competitive total. Rene du Toit was eventually dismissed for a very well-played 62. We ended up on 162/9 after Devon Arendse was caught for a very well-played 42. The defence of 162 began well as Aziz Dalmau picked up two wickets in his first two overs - courtesy of two top class deliveries clipping the top of off stump. Adam Roux continued to build the pressure from the other end as Bishops struggled to get their off spinners away. The frustration built and the other Bishops opener was removed by Roux trapping him LBW. Bishops limped to the drinks break at 44/4. The first five overs after the drinks break continued in similar fashion as Lloyd Witten picked up a wicket and runs were hard to come by. Bishops then put a useful partnership together that threatened to get Bishops back into the game as they started to find the boundary whilst also picking up valuable singles. Liam Wrightson managed to pick up the hard-hitting Bishops number six and that was the end of the Bishops challenge. Bishops were eventually dismissed off the last ball of the innings for 139. The boys ended off a very memorable season with a thoroughly well-deserved victory. Credit to the team for remaining calm under pressure and not panicking when Bishops started to put us under pressure. Rene du Toit 62 Devon Arendse 42 RBHS won by 23 runs

U14B team at their day & night match against Bishops U14D vs Bishops Rondebosch Boys U14D played Bishops on Thursday 8, at Bishops, in a much anticipated Day/Night encounter. We won the toss and elected to bat first. We got off to a terrible start: losing a wicket in the first ball of the game. From there things just got worse. After the first over we were 0 for 3. We then lost another two leaving us reeling at 12 for 5. Eventually, the tail enders were able to stabilize our innings and we batted out the 30 overs to end up on a competitive 111. Our bowling attack got off to a flyer with Matthew Bendall taking three wickets in the opening over. From there the boys confidence kept growing and wickets kept tumbling. The fielding on top of this was spectacular with no catches dropped and every ball chased right until the end. We were eventually able to bowl them all out for 87 and take the win by 24 runs. Unbelievable display from the U14D's. RBHS batted first and scored 111 for 9 Bishops replied with 87 all out Matthew Bendall 5 for 15 off 6, Gareth Heiberg 4 for 25 off 6 RBHS won by 24 runs Note We endeavour to report on all matches, however, reports not received by the midday Tuesday deadline cannot be included.
