Sunday 7 November at Wynberg (WP T20 KO Q-final) T20 match RBHS v Fairmont RBHS 138/6 Taarig Chiektay 57, Jaco Zeeman 37 n.o. Fairmont 76 Danie Krynauw 4/10 U19A 1st Team vs Primrose The Rondebosch 1 st X1 enjoyed a good week on the cricket field. The week kicked off with a 20/20 fixture on Tuesday against Primrose Cricket Club. Winning the toss and batting at Cricket A the Bosch boys were determined not to let the vociferous visitor s supporters have much to cheer about as they set about the Primrose bowlers. In this respect Hayes van der Berg was outstanding. Hayes managed to find the perfect balance between playing aggressively and maintaining his shape and not resorting to simply slogging. Hayes was assisted by Matthew Norris (36) and Taariq Chiektey (40 not out off 17 balls) and ended on a magnificent 111 not out off only 58 balls to ensure that the Rondebosch side finished with an imposing 217 for 2 after their 20 overs. The Primrose batsmen were never in with a chance of reaching the total, and were bowled out for 116 off the last ball of the innings. Keagan Smith (3 for 10) and Zubayr Hamza (2 for 5) being the best of the bowlers in the 101 run victory. Mr Rob Dalrymple (Coach) U19A 1st Team vs Bergvliet (20/20 at Bergvliet) Bergvliet were our next opponents in another 20/20 match on Friday. Batting first Bosch were initially made to work hard by the Bergvliet attack and at 39 for 3, the match was in the balance. Hilio de Abreu joined Taariq Chiektey at the crease and the pair began to dominate the home side bowlers with a mixture of aggressive shot-making and good running between the wickets. The pair put on a 108 run partnership 7

with Taariq scoring 55 off 39 balls and Hilio s 51 coming off 38 balls. The innings ended on 181 which proved too much for the Bergvliet batsmen. Dewald Keulder with 3 for 7 and Jaco Zeeman with 3 for 19 made sure of Rondebosch s place in the final next week as the hosts could only muster 78 in reply. Mr Rob Dalrymple (Coach) U19A 1st Team vs Fairmont (20/20 at Wynberg) Sunday was quarter-final day in the knockout 20/20 competition and RBHS faced a highly motivated Fairmont side looking to emulate their hockey side s victory over RBHS earlier in the year. Hayes van der Berg (28) and Taariq Chiektey (57) continued their good form with the bat and Jaco Zeeman with 37 not out made an important contribution towards the end to put Bosch in a good position at the halfway stage with 145 on the board on a wicket that was not conducive to run scoring. Fairmont, much to their enthusiastic supporters delight, began breezily but soon lost wickets in the face of some tight bowling. Danie Krynauw, on debut, was the pick of the bowlers ending with excellent figures of 4 for 10 off his allotted 4 overs. The Fairmont challenge never really threatened the score and it was left to the tailenders to meander along to the final score of 97 for 9 off 20 overs to see Rondebosch making it through to the semi-final next week. Mr Rob Dalrymple (Coach) U19A 1st Team vs Wynberg BHS Rondebosch won the toss and batted on a wicket that looked like it might provide some assistance to the seam bowlers at the Jacques Kallis Oval on Saturday. Aidan Morris and Hayes van der Berg made a good start for the visitors and despite playing and missing, they maintained their composure through the difficult new ball period. It was in fact the introduction of spin that provided Wynberg with the breakthrough when Aidan was caught off Dylan Sage for 30. This brought Matthew Norris to the wicket and Hayes and Matthew set about building a significant partnership. The wicket provided enough assistance to ensure that the batsmen were never completely set, but both Hayes and Matthew made sure that they took full advantage of any loose deliveries which helped to maintain a healthy run rate throughout the innings. Hayes was unfortunately run out for 61 off 75 balls including 8 fours and a six to put an end to the 91 run partnership. Taariq Chiektey then joined Matthew Norris and was happy to play the junior partner role as Matthew began to dominate the bowling. These two put on a further 61 before Taariq was out shortly before lunch which Rondebosch went to at 214 for 3. After lunch Matthew continued to impress and went to a well-deserved century before being stumped for 105 in the quest for quick runs before the declaration. Matthew faced 148 balls striking 12 fours and 1 six. Rondebosch s innings ended on 286 for 8. Wynberg needed to bat well, but with their highly regarded top order it was certainly not an impossible target. Van der Bergh removed the dangerous Dalton Kannemeyer early, and Christian and Smith followed before the 8

tea interval for Wynberg to be on 73 for 3 at the break. The two form batsmen, Edmeades and Beddingham, played superbly after the interval, putting pressure on the Rondebosch bowlers and fielders alike with good strokeplay and running between the wickets and with Wynberg requiring 96 off the last 12 overs with 7 wickets in hand and two batsmen set at the crease, a Wynberg victory looked a very possible result. Beddingham was caught shortly afterwards and when Edmeades followed in the next over and Fortune attempted a suicidal single two overs later, the Wynberg challenge was effectively over and the lower order ensured that the match was drawn with Wynberg finishing on 222 for 7. Mr Rob Dalrymple (Coach) U19B 2nd Team vs Wynberg BHS This was the swansong match for our two leaders Michael Dugmore and Gregg Scott. And it turned out to be a good day of cricket to watch. Wynberg won the toss and elected to bat. In overcast conditions we stuck to our task of bowling a tight line & length and made life tough for them. Shabier Sayed had a great opening spell and was ably supported by Danie Krynauw. Sufyian Banderkar again came to the party with 4/38. All the bowlers did a job in restricting them to 209/9 in 64 overs. Wynberg bowled very well upfront and this made it difficult to score. It was the perfect situation for Gregg Scott to show his fighting spirit and he stuck it out for a long period of time to give us the platform to try and win the game. He eventually perished on 38 and the game was delicately poised. We eventually needed 75 to win off the last 15 overs with 5 wickets in hand. However, the loss of a couple of wickets saw us holding out for a draw and eventually ending 40 runs short at 168/8. Other batsmen who played really well were Sufyian with a good 30, Richard Palframan with a well-played 28, and Richard Stirton who steadied the ship upfront when we were under serious pressure. It was a sad day due to Michael and Gregg finishing off. I want to thank them for their leadership to the team and wish them well for their futures. Mr.Peter Harold (2 nd XI Coach) U19C 3rd Team vs Wynberg BHS With slightly overcast conditions, and a wicket that looked like it had a few demons in it from the week s rain, Matthew summed it up correctly when he said that it was a good toss to lose. Wynberg won the toss and elected to bat. Our bowlers and fielders did a superb job of bowling Wynberg out for only 101 runs in 29 overs. Jesse Gordon bowled superbly to end with figures of 2/10 in seven overs. He should have had another wicket, but more about that later. Reece Gregg also ended with good figures of 3/11 in 4 overs. 9

It was also during this inning that I experienced one of the most unusual overs that I have had in recent years. Firstly, one of the Wynberg opening batsmen retired hurt (something I have never experienced in my years of umpiring) after Donavan Benson intimidated him with a number of quick balls on the body and one on the hand. The batsman on the bowler s end asked me how many balls were left in the over, since there was a bit of confusion when his partner retired. I was still busy replying to his question, when I heard our bowler, Jesse, bowl behind my back. As I looked up, in the middle of my sentence, I saw the new batsman s middle stump fly. Realising that I could have caused a distraction with my talking during the delivery, I called the batsman back and asked for the ball to be replayed. What I should have done earlier, was simply to stick my left arm out to prevent the bowler from bowling when the batsman started talking to me. Fortunately for me, Leo Pike saved me only a few balls later when he caught the same batsmen for only 2 runs. I think the boys were correct I deserve the Doughnut Man this week. Conditions was not easy to bat in, but we lost our way and in one of the poorest batting displays of the year, we got ourselves bowled out for 85 runs. Some batsmen were simply bowled or caught out by near unplayable balls from a difficult pitch, but one or two of our wickets were given away carelessly. What made the loss worse for us, was that we lost by only 16 runs, after we gave Wynberg 32 extras (they gave away 12 in their bowling spell) in their innings of 101! We will have to go back to practice this week and work on that bowling discipline one cannot expect to win matches by giving away so many extras. Mr. Gustaf Pienaar (Coach) (Match Scorebook at foot of Cricket Corner) U19D 4th Team vs Wynberg BHS In a 20 over game, RBHS batted far too slowly, scoring 110/7 wkts. Clark 30. In reply, Wynberg scored 111/8 wkts, winning with 3 balls to spare. Yusuf Couterier 3/9 in 4 overs. Mr. Rowan Harmuth (Coach) U19E 5th Team vs Wynberg BHS U15A vs Wynberg BHS Venue: Silverhurst B Field Start Time: 9.30am Format: Declaration Match We played Wynberg and sent them in to bat upon winning the toss. This was the first time we ever sent another team to bat upon winning the toss, but the overcast conditions and our faith that our bowlers would do the job were soon evident as batting conditions were tough. We picked up regular 10

wickets and had them in deep trouble at 6 wickets down for 80 something. The old saying of catches win matches would come to haunt us as we dropped a number of catches. Kay Skovgaard- Petersen and Prashant Makan bowled brilliantly with an opening burst, while Duncan Campbell had the batsman in constant trouble. Duncan and Kay were both rewarded well with taken 4 wickets each. Wynberg should not have reached the eventual target of 166 runs, but even so we always felt that we were in with a good chance of winning the match. Our batting has been our strength throughout the past two seasons and we were confident in our approach. We were soon in trouble at 45 for three after some good shots from Devon van Rensburg, but he unfortunately got out too early. We needed to consolidate and it was Zubayr Hamza and Michael Cursons who played good anchor roles. Zubayr was out just after tea with a fluid 50, but then we lost a further 2 quick wickets placing us under enormous strain at around 100 runs. The Doman boys of Liam and Jamie then set about patiently picking up the runs, but when they went out we were staring down the barrel. Unfortunately for us, our last pair could not get the necessary 16 runs for victory and we were bowled out. The game was lost with the dropped catches and some unfortunate wickets taken by them at the wrong time which swung the game in their favour. A disappointing result for us, but hopefully we can finish our season off with a good game and playing to our potential against Bishops on Thursday. Batsman Zubayr Hamza 50 Devon van Rensburg 24 Liam Doman 20 Bowling: Kay Skovgaard- Petersen 39 runs 20 overs 4 wkts Duncan Campbell 28 runs 10 overs 4 wkts Zubayr Hamza - (Under 15A cricket captain) Mr. Johan Snijmann (Coach) U15B vs. Wynberg BHS The RBHS U15B side looked to keep the momentum going as we locked horns against our old rivals Wynberg. We lost the toss on a flat wicket that did not offer any assistance to the bowlers and Wynberg decided to bat. Our seamers bowled good areas with good control which kept the opposition scoring minimal, however our spinners could not maintain that grip and that proved a bit costly as Wyberg ended up posting a competitive 149 for 7 off their 35 overs. We always thought we were in with a chance as our batting line up was a pretty strong one, however, some careless, nervous and unconvincing shots saw us lose wickets at regular intervals even though we had a healthy run rate. Nick Le Roux batted with maturity and composure to be last man out for 49 after opening the batting. His team mates let him down as we ended up on 103 all out falling short by 46 runs. A lot of work needs to be done before our last game to finish the season on a high. Mr. Client Musamba (Coach) U15C vs. Wynberg BHS 11

U15D vs. Wynberg BHS U14A vs Wynberg BHS The recent good form of the U/14a came to an abrupt end with a 34 run loss against Wynberg. Rondebosch won the toss and sent Wynberg into bat and a good spell by Jay Stevens (5-38) saw Wynberg in trouble. Stef Filippi and Chad Muller cleaned up the tail, putting the Rondebosch side into a very strong position of having only to chase 101 runs. All credit to Wynberg, as an inspired spell saw Rondebosch having no answer to some fiery bowling. James Donald alone showed determined resistance (27 not out) but Wynberg manged to bowl about four unplayable deliveries, cleaning up the top order and bowling Rondebosch all out for 67. On reflection the Bosch side has probably had it too easy of late and this is a timely reminder that cricket is a great leveler. The season has shown that Bosch have the character to bounce back and a repeat of the demolition job that the side did against Bishops in the first term, is going to be needed for the last game. Mr. Lloyd Nel (Coach) U14B vs. Wynberg BHS The U14B s hosted Wynberg on Saturday in what was always going to be a tough match. After the disappointment of the week before, the boys were keen to put things right and put in a good performance. After winning the toss we decided to bat first and set Wynberg a challenging score. We lost Trocado early but a solid 38 run partnership put us in a good position before both Seroux and Louw were dismissed leaving us at 41/3. Another good partnership of 46 between McEwan and Jeffrey pushed on as we reached 87/3 after 20 overs. At this stage we were looking at a total of around the 170 mark however things did not go our way. The introduction of the left arm seamer from Wynberg made all the difference as he dismissed McEwan for 33 before Jeffrey was dismissed for 26 and the wheels fell off. We were bowled out for 133 in the 34 th over, a disappointing total after all the hard work had been put in early in the innings. 133 was a total we thought we could still defend if we bowled well and held onto our chances. Wynberg came out in an aggressive mood but presented us with our first opportunity with the score on 38. Unfortunately we were not able to take advantage of this and Wynberg continued on their merry way. Two more catches were dropped with the score on 55 an 82 as well as a missed run out. Whatever we tried did not work for us on the day and Wynberg won by 10 wickets. A thoroughly disappointing result but credit must be given to the Wynberg batsman. They showed us how to mix being conservative and aggressive while punishing the bad ball as well as running between the wickets very well. The true character of the team will now be tested as we face Bishops in the final game of the season. Mr. William Solomon (Coach) 12
