13 MATCH COACHING In addition to specific individual skills training, we will ensure all colts are taught the following basics so that they can participate effectively as a team in matches. BATTING 1) Calling Learning to call when a run is possible - Yes or No if no run is possible. Call made by batsman if ball hit in front of wicket and by non-striking batsman if ball goes behind the wicket. 2) Backing up The non-striking batsman should walk up to the crease as the bowler delivers the ball and be ready to run, trailing the bat within the crease until the ball is delivered. 3) Running between the wickets When running, reach for the crease with the bat gliding along the ground and once your bat reaches beyond crease (or earlier with experience) look around to see if another run is possible and be ready to run back if necessary. Another call is useful here to notify the other batsman of your intentions. Remember some part of you or the bat you are holding must be behind the crease to prevent being run out. 4) Observe the positions of the fielders and decide where the ball needs to be hit to avoid them and score runs. FIELDING 1) Learn the position for fielding so that when your captain asks you to go to say Cover Point, you know where to go. 2) Except for slips and close fielders, all fielders should demonstrate they are ready for action by walking in about five paces as the bowler comes in to bowl. 3) Eyes should be focussed on the batsman so that the shot he is shaping to play can be anticipated. 4) Slip fielders should watch the edge of the bat which is where the ball will come from if it comes their way. 5) Always look to the Captain after every ball, in case he wishes you to move fielding positions. GENERAL Always support the other members of the team. Applaud their efforts and console them if they drop a catch or mis-field and concentrate on making amends from the next ball. Never make derogatory comments about or to your opponents. Above all play to win and enjoy the match, but accept any defeat gracefully. On conclusion, thank your opponents and officials and if you win celebrate success as a team

14 As a coaching team we will expect our colts to be competent and receive the necessary support to reach a particular basic level at specific age ranges.
