Thank you, again, for turning out in sorts of weather and supporting your sons. There is a special camaraderie at the astro as we catch up with news and give Ardi s a roaring trade, especially when it s cold!

It was really good to see Jo-Ané Deysel returning and getting fully involved, as a spectator this time. You will remember that she was an assistant coach for the First Team last term.

Here SACS OB and past teacher, Geoff Olivier, catches up with old friends at the astro. Interestingly, the land on which Fairmont HS has been built was the actual farm of the Olivier family.

3 It was really good to see Jo-Ané Deysel returning and getting fully involved, as a spectator this time. You will remember that she was an assistant coach for the First Team last term. In fact, it was in the Bishops fixture last term that she tore her ankle ligaments whilst warming up the team! Old Friends says the song. Here SACS OB and past teacher, Geoff Olivier, catches up with old friends at the astro. Interestingly, the land on which Fairmont HS has been built was the actual farm of the Olivier family. Geoff Olivier spent his youth running around those hills on which we played two weeks ago. In terms of results, it was a big improvement on the matches at Bishops last term. From winning only four last time, we upped that to six and added an extra draw. It is widely-known that Bishops have a very strong under 19 division and our seniors were again all beaten, but by lesser margins and continuing to show true grit. The First Team, after being overrun 0-8 last term, fought well in going down 1-4 this time. Three quick goals in the first half really set the boys back, but they dug deep and drew the second half. This weekend we welcome Rondebosch to our field again (although some matches are at Rondebosch) and we look forward to seeing old friends and beating them. Below are the coaches match reports: First XI: The boys were excited about making right their performance from term two. We had worked hard at improving our offensive

4 distribution recently and wanted to take more of the game to Bishops, having turned over the ball too cheaply in our first game. However, perhaps we should have concentrated on marking and orientating ourselves with our man as marking and diving into tackles was the cause of two goals within the first ten minutes. Having made a more conscious effort to then add ball pressure to the opposition, SACS began to effect more turnovers and get into the game more. However, another goal conceded shortly before half time (from second-phase penalty corner scraps) saw the score climb to 0-3 to Bishops. The second half was a more even contest with SACS having good territory and chances, but without finding the right finish. Good play down the left flank by Greg Willows and smart play in the D from Markus Sass led to Kabelo Mosothoane knocking the ball in from secnd post. Had SACS been given the PS for deliberate goalsaving foul on Nick McKechnie, the game momentum may have swung further, but a late break gave a Bishops player a tomahawk-shot goal, sealing the contest.

5 The boys gave a lot to this game, but it was a classy Bishops team on the night. They won 4-1. J. Peverley Second XI: What an interesting game of hockey: SACS conceded a goal within the first 25 seconds of the match and then no more goals were scored in the remainder of the match. This was largely down to some very good goalkeeping from David Rossouw and his Bishops counterpart. SACS had many opportunities to score and unfortunately did not convert their chances. Late in the second half, SACS started playing a good brand of hockey with great movement off the ball and had a number of circle entries. However, the goals would not materialise. It has been pleasing to see the more complete performances over the last two matches and I am sure we will have a good showing in our two remaining derbies. Third XI: E. Grobler This weekend the task for the SACS Thirds was to show a vast improvement from their first encounter with Bishops. This being the last encounter against Bishops for the Matrics, they were ready for a passion-fuelled encounter. Ben Heins, Duncan Nicolson, Sam Goodson, Josh Hales and Craig Swingler all gave it their level best. The rest of the team were out to support them and show Bishops what improvements had been

6 made. The team most certainly showed a different character than before and held out for a far better result. Unfortunately, rushed attacking play, which was largely focused down the centre of the field, provided quick turnover for Bishops, who capitalised and put four goals past the SACS Thirds by the end of the game. A lack of patience in build-up and, once again, poor changing of channels during play, hampered consistent, long passages of possession. Bishops were effective at creating a high-press at speed and our defenders were never quite quick enough in their decisionmaking to get the ball out from deep in our own half. Duncan Nicolson had a stellar game in goal and prevented a few more for Bishops. The gentlemen showed such promise and have a few skills and tricks up their sleeves. It just seems that the self-belief is lacking at times and, without effective communication on the pitch, it feels as if there are eleven single players trying to make a win happen. The blinkers need to come off and the gentlemen must understand that forward is not the only way to goals! The boys must trust in their own ample abilities which they display during practice. They must also trust in one-another to get the job done against Rondebosch this weekend. Fourth XI: S. Barnard The match took place at Woodlands Astro at Bishops. Bishops currently has an extremely strong U19 age group, with great depth and structure. Their players have considerably better basic skills and patterns of play than our team. I must compliment the SACS players for playing their best under the circumstances, running hard and tackling well. There was a great improvement from our first game against the same opposition last term. T. Wiborg

U16A: The U16A match against Bishops ended in a 0-0 draw, but was far from the dull contest that the result suggests.

This resulted in SACS having a few more opportunities to score in a game that was end-to-end, and if I had to fault them,

SACS were looking to reverse the result of the away game played last term where they conceded a controversial goal to go down 1-0. Once again, both teams were evenly-matched but SACS were able to play with more purpose and at a slightly higher tempo. This resulted in SACS having a few more opportunities to score in a game that was end-to-end, and if I had to fault them, should have scored from two of the chances. Overall, the team played a good brand of positive hockey and should now have the belief that they are able to win all of their remaining matches, if they reproduce the quality of hockey seen on Friday. Opportunities were created by both teams and both goal-keepers were doing a sterling job to prevent any goals from being scored. However, we did break the Bishops defence during the third phase of a penalty corner to take a 1-0 lead at half time. The second half was a much better performance, especially the last fifteen minutes or so when the team kept possession longer, created really good inter-passing options and dominated in all spheres of the game. It was exciting to watch. The final result of a 4-0 victory was well-deserved. With two matches left of the season, this is definitely the standard of hockey that we would like to play. Hopefully the team pushes themselves to the end of the season by setting high standards. M. van Zyl

10 U16B: The U16B team faced a tough Bishops side. Bishops went one goal up early in the game due to poor marking around the goal. The rest of the first half was played predominantly in SACS s half. The U16B goalkeeper, Alex Lomnitz, pulled off some spectacular saves to keep SACS in the game. The team managed a few counter attacks, none of them leading to goals. SACS went into the second half firing. An early goal was scored by Ibrahim Mahmood following a good short-corner routine. Thomas Theron tapped in another to make it 2-1 to SACS. Bishops were on the back foot, barely managing to stay in the game as SACS let a few chances go a-begging. A lapse in defence at the end of the game allowed Bishops to win a short corner. This short corner was converted to make the final score 2-2. It was a disappointing draw for the team, following an excellent second half performance. Matthew D Aguiar U16C: The U16C team got off to slow start against Bishops at the weekend. SACS went into the match over-confident and did not expect the Bishops boys to put up a solid fight from the get-go. The only time Bishops visited the SACS D was enough for them to convert into a goal. Bishops constantly applied pressure by double, and sometime triple marking the SACS boys, but that eventually led to openings all over the astroturf. In the second half SACS began moving the ball around and switched the play so that Bishops did not have the chance to double-mark our players. Soon we were applying constant pressure in the opponent s half and were awarded penalty short-corners, which were both converted into goals.

11 SACS morale was boosted and the team regained the composure that was lost in the first half. A third goal was scored from a backstick shot from top D which the Bishops goalkeeper did not see coming. The last minute saw the Bishops team launch an all-out offensive in which they were awarded a penalty short-corner. Bishops converted, and SACS won 3-2. R. Hugo

U16D: The U16D team had another successful match, beating Bishops 6-0.

There was a lot of positive play and good team-work resulting in firsthalf goals by Alex Daneels, Joshua September, Philippe Hartgers and Taahir Sulaiman. In the second half, Alex and Philippe added to the total with a goal each. We tried very hard to beat our score of 7-0 from earlier in the season, but were denied several times by the Bishops keeper. U14B: On a rather hot Friday afternoon the U14Bs put together one of their finest performances of the year and blew Bishops off their home ground.

13 U14B: On a rather hot Friday afternoon the U14Bs put together one of their finest performances of the year and blew Bishops off their home ground. This thoroughly asserted the SACS side as the better team with an aggregate score-line of 5-2. Friday's 4-1 victory erased the painful draw at home during the first half of the season. After setting new goals and standards for the final term of hockey, the team's general play has reached new heights. With fast and precise passes, slipped effortlessly from player to player, the Bishops side may as well have joined their parents in the stands as they would have been much more comfortable watching from the shade! Blistering runs from Alperstein down the flanks of the pitch, and great control of the game from Aasif Parker and Wiggill in the midfield, allowed the boys to play with a confidence and flair that we have struggled to find throughout the season. Despite our domination of the game, we went into half time at 0-0. However, this was soon to change and the flood gates opened with goals from Callum Parker, Alperstein and two from Wiggill. Given the pure quality of our GK, Gian Luca, one can only assume he let in a consolation goal to cheer up the somewhat-miserable Bishops team. Joking aside, he must again be commended for an excellent game between the poles - a real star for the future. Although a few names have been singled out, the old cliche of it being a "complete team effort" could not be more accurate. All

14 fourteen players were simply outstanding on the day and I have the utmost confidence that, in our final two fixtures, the boys will come out firing and avenge our earlier losses against Bosch and Wynberg. Finally, thank you once more to those that provided lifts to the game and for the continued support throughout the season. Sam Holmes U14C: With icy rain and frosty breaths, the morning started very early with a lot of anticipation in the air. The hopes were that, this time, it would be us taking home the gold at the end of the double rainbow stretching over the astro. The chill kept morale mediocre at best though, and our boys did not have the best of starts. They conceded three goals to Bishops by the end of the first half, despite some reputable hockey from our side. SACS had most of the possession but, as usual, fell just short of putting the goals away. After half time, the team marched onto the pitch with a new kind of determination in their eye. Infused with a new fighting spirit, the boys proceeded to score five goals, much to the excitement of the team and the surprise of the Bishops side. In addition, no goals were conceded in the second half. The team spirit was strong, as were their skills. The improvement since last term's fixture was astounding and speaks volumes about the commitment and hard work of the boys and their coaches. It was a riveting game to watch and SACS came home with smiles on their faces and another victory to their name. J.
