1 CUMNOR HOUSE SCHOOL 20 NOVEMBER 2015 WEEKLY NEWSLETTER U9 Downsend Tournament Both the U9 A & B teams competed in the Downsend Tournament last Saturday 14 November. The A team lost their two opening group matches against Milbourne Lodge & Thomas Clapham, but won their last match against Downsend B. This resulted in the A team finishing third in the group. The U9 B team, up against A teams from Parkside, Downsend & Northcote Lodge, showed great fight, character & determination, but ultimately all three teams were too strong for them in the group stage. This resulted in the B team finishing fourth in the group. The performances of the two teams resulted in them playing each other in the semi-final of the bottom half of the tournament. The B team were the better side for the majority of the game, however, they failed to score, followed by defensive errors that saw the A team come away with a 2-0 win. This win resulted in the A team playing in the Shield Final against Downsend B. The match was goalless and both teams ended up sharing the trophy. There was a similar story in the Bowl final, where despite dominating Northcote Lodge, the match ended 0-0, which again saw the trophy was also shared. Mr Leck CHS U8 FOOTBALL TOURNAMENT The U8A and B teams took part in the 16 team Cumnor House Tournament. The A team started the day well, with a positive performance against Hawthorns and Thomas' Clapham, however, the team could only scrape two draws despite playing the better football. The A team went through to the plate draw where they beat Elmhust (4-0) and Parkside (1-0) in the quarter and semi-finals, respectively. Unfortunately, in the final, Cumnor could not manage to break the deadlock and were sent to a penalty shootout. Cumnor missed the first two penalties, resulting in a 2-0 loss. The U8 B team showed great determination playing against other A teams, however, they found it difficult losing all of their matches. Mr Cobb was delighted with the effort of his boys and their attempts to pass the ball and create space. Mr Jones

2 Informal Concert The second Informal Concert of the term took place on Tuesday night. It was a night of many 'firsts'!

For several boys it was their first Informal Concert, but they kept their nerves under wraps as they opened the concert with 'Mad World' - sadly appropriate given current world events.

2 2 Informal Concert The second Informal Concert of the term took place on Tuesday night. It was a night of many 'firsts'! The Cello Ensemble performed for the first time under the direction of Mrs McGregor. For several boys it was their first Informal Concert, but they kept their nerves under wraps as they opened the concert with 'Mad World' - sadly appropriate given current world events. The Lamborghini Strings, lead this term by Mr Wallace, saw more debutantes take center stage for their performance of 'Square Dance' and 'Boil 'em down Cabbage'. Edvard Greig's 'Hall of the Mountain King' is a piece that in previous years might have been associated with the String Orchestra, but Mr Parrott's new Guitar Ensemble gave a very slick performance of their version of this familiar classic and with 5 more boys waiting in the wings to join this group, the future looks good! In between the ensemble performances, the audience was entertained by a variety of soloists; drummers, pianists, cellists, violinists and singers. The boys were proof indeed of what hard work and dedication can achieve - there must have been some proud parents in the room! The final performance of the evening came from the new Senior Bell Ensemble, who wound down the evening with their beautiful 'Golden Slumbers'. It was such a busy evening that although Mr Sizer remembered to mention a very interesting article in TedEd about the affect of music on the brain and the forthcoming Christmas Concert on 14 December, he completely forgot to mention the fine moustache that he is currently sporting in aid of Movember! This is the third year that he has taken part in this very worthwhile fundraising event - if you would like to help him reach his target, please donate online, via where you can see a picture from last year with some of the younger boys suspiciously having grown one too! Mrs Magill STRING MASTERCLASS AT THE ROYAL ALBERT HALL During the Summer holiday, I attended a 2 hour string masterclass on the stage of the Royal Albert Hall with famous violinist, Alina Ibragimova. The event had been arranged by the Royal Albert Hall Education and Outreach programme and the BBC Proms organisers. The purpose of the class was to develop young string players skills and confidence by giving them the opportunity to play alongside world-class players. Within the workshop, we were led by Alina through Vivaldi s 'Spring' and at the end we gave an informal concert to our parents. The Royal Albert Hall is large and fantastic inside. I walked up and through the empty aisles to explore afterwards and see what it would be like to be in the audience. The boys spent the day investigating and recording the weather in different locations in the wood. This was a fabulous introduction to our Science topic, Whatever the Weather. They learnt about the seasons, observed the signs Of Autumn and made season wheels back in the education room. The boys also learnt about plants, animals and habitats in the wood. They really enjoyed being out in the fresh air, learning about and experiencing weather and seasonal change first-hand. Mrs Curtis Art Workshop at Dulwich College Our day started with a delicious lunch, superior to a five star restaurant. Afterwards we went into Studio 4 of the vast Art department and met pupils from three other schools. During the workshop, we were informed about the history and introduction of photography and we were given random photos of plants and told to draw them on polyblock. We were then split into teams of two teams of six, where we sketched onto the polyblock and gouged out the patterns in order to create a giant length of mono-printed plants - a veritable jungle. SAMARITAN S PURSE OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD Excited boys helped load 155 Christmas boxes into the boot of a car on Wednesday. The boys stood there in disbelief as the last box was squeezed into a tiny gap. They were astonished to see so many boxes fit in a car but then so were we! Many of us tend to forget how fortunate we are as we celebrate Christmas time; opening gifts and enjoying the many festivities - so many children in the world have very little. Treetops Purley contributed 58 boxes out of the 155 boxes that were collected in total. To all those parents and boys who spent their time packing a special Christmas box, a big THANK YOU for bringing joy to children in need. Mrs Kelly DIWALI ASSEMBLY Pre-Prep welcomed Mrs Vijay (Arjun Vijay s mum) and Mrs Sampath (Atul s mum), to join our assembly on Tuesday 17 November. They delivered a power point presentation and spoke to the boys about the Hindu Festival, Diwali. Diwali is the Hindus Festival of Lights which celebrates the New Year. The festival of lights is held in honour of Lakshmi, the Hindu Goddess of wealth and prosperity. Atul explained the festivities over the five day period, Arjun retold the story of Rama and Sita and Ayan Deshpande ended with a prayer. We would like to thank Mrs Vijay, Mrs Sampath and the boys for sharing the Hindu Festival at our assembly this week. Mrs Kelly
