CUMNOR HOUSE SCHOOL 20 MARCH 2015 WEEKLY NEWSLETTER YEAR 1 SPRING CONCERT This week the boys in Year 1 came together to perform in the Spring Concert especially dedicated to their Mums for Mother s Day. The classes showcased their dance moves in their 'Family Dance' and 'Floral dance'. Poems were confidently recited and they sung their hearts out. Our budding actors took to the stage in their own version of a play based on the story of 'The Enormous Turnip'. The boys have since decided that enormous turnips may be better off if left in the ground! The boys were delighted to have the support of their families and would like to thank everyone who took the opportunity to come and watch them. Miss Coelho YEAR 2 SPRING CONCERT The Year 2 Spring Concert took place on Tuesday to a packed audience! The performance was on stage at the Girls School and the boys really enjoyed going back in time to explore the life and work of Florence Nightingale. Each class took on the role of either orphans, soldiers or nurses and doctors and the boys all said their lines clearly, sang songs beautifully and performed their dances with enthusiasm and rhythm! The concert also included some wonderful solo singing from Nate Opedo in 2P. Ishan Patil, Shiv Tailor, Max Williamson, Advait Sharma, Krishaan Malik, Harry Shorney, Dylan Patel, Anushman Ravindran, Rishabh Thaper and Yuvaan Puri played recorders and tambourine to accompany one of the songs. All in all a spectacular performance enjoyed by all. Special thanks to Miss Secker for teaching the boys the songs and accompanying the performance on the piano. Mrs Parker-Brown

2 U10 CUMNOR HOUSE SCHOOL RUGBY TOURNAMENT Last Saturday, Cumnor House hosted schools from across the country for the Under 10 A Rugby Tournament. The fixture is seen as a hugely competitive tournament, with many high calibre and skilled teams. With Cumnor House winning the title last year, the boys were understandably eager to retain their trophy. The boys started the tournament against New Beacon School, a well matched team where the winning result could have gone to either team. Unfortunately for us, due to missed tackles New Beacon won putting the team out of the main competition. This was gutting for the squad, however, with a motivational team talk from Mr Brotherton, the boys fired up for the next four games against Donhead Bs, City of Freeman School, Milbourne Lodge and Elmhurst. Here the boys were outstanding in attack and defence. Special mentions go to Callum Murray who led the team by example and was relentless in his scanning ability and tackling. Ovie Whiskey also was extremely dominant in attack and played through an injury for nearly the entire tournament, whilst and Frankie Draper who was newly initiated into the A team, produced outstanding performances. The sterling performances saw the team do extremely well after the first game and they were promoted into the plate final from their four wins. The final match was against Rokeby prep school, a worthy advisory that had been playing some outstanding Rugby during the course of the day. Having played Rokeby and lost with a embarrassing margin at home, the boys had a point to prove! The team did not start well with leaking two tries due to missing individual tackles. It was looking like a bitter defeat, until Tino Mina broke the defensive line to score a fantastic individual try. This try injected belief into the side and the boys an added boost for the second half. The second half was saw aggressive tackling with both sides holding onto the ball extremely well. After leaking a try due to a miss tackle, Asher Agbinone managed to score a fantastic try on the wing. With fantastic support from parents, class mates and senior members of the 1 st XV, an outstanding come back was on! Sadly it wasn't meant to be and Rokeby managed to score a try in last minute of the match. Although unfortunately the season didn't finish with silverware, the boys did the school and their fellow team mates proud. Overall, a fantastic hosted day hosted by Cumnor house! Mr Swinburne

YONGHY BONGHY BO The Choristers performed at St. Bride's Church, Fleet Street, on Wednesday in a concert of new music for JAM (John Armitage Memorial Trust). They sang "The Yonghy Bonghy Bo" - based on a poem of the same name by Edward Lear. As some of the audience remarked the boys were a credit to their school with impeccable behaviour and a focused performance. Mr. Barrett also attended the concert and has, in the true spirit of Lear, written a marvellous poem to sum up the whole experience. Mr Sizer 3 Cumnor House Choristers pictured with Giles Swayne (composer) Nicholas Cleobury (conductor) Selwyn Singers and Onyx Brass.

4 YEAR 4 TRIP TO HAMPTON COURT Last Friday, Year 4 went to Hampton Court for an unforgettable History trip. Transported back in time over 400 years, the boys were introduced to King Henry VIII s court in two interactive learning sessions with a lady of the Tudor Court and a master baker from the palace kitchens. In Exploring the Past they became history detectives and investigated lots of artefacts from trying on a piece of armour, to using 16th century glasses! In the palace kitchens they discovered how the kitchens managed to feed over 700 people, stoked the enormous fireplace place and even worked out how much wine King Henry would have with his dinner! The day was an exciting mix of exploring the enormous palace, learning about the Tudors, investigating the palace gardens and spending ages in the gift shop! The boys had a brilliant time and were sensible and well behaved. Thank you very much to all the teachers and mums who helped us on the trip! Mrs Turner THE TRAINING CHOIR PERFORM AT THE COULSDON & PURLEY MUSIC FESTIVAL On Saturday 7 March the Training Choir took to the stage at Sanderstead United Reform Church to perform in the Coulsdon & Purley Music Festival. We were first to sing in our class, so we took our places on the stage and waited for what seemed like a very long time (in fact only a few minutes). The boys were understandably nervous singing their first song, A Tall Story a lively song with lots of words, but the words were delivered crisply. Our aim with this song was to make the audience laugh at the lyrics and we certainly succeeded with this! We followed this with our contrasting song Beauty and the Beast, a slower song requiring breath control and focus. We felt pleased with our performances and sat down to listen to the other two choirs. The adjudicator, Sarah Dunston, said that we had good diction, tone and well-balanced harmonies and awarded us Honours. She also gave us some things to work on and we have already started on these so watch out for an even better performance in the Summer Concert. Well done boys! Miss Secker

5 THE STORYTELLER VISIT Reception to Year 3 were lucky to meet Vanessa Woolf, a Storyteller who captured the attention and imagination of all the boys and staff that she encountered. The Reception boys dug a big hole to catch an angry giant! Year 1 used excellent acting to become part of the story they listened to. Vanessa gave the Year 2 boys some great tips for story writing and Year 3 listened to a Greek Myth. All in all a fantastic literacy experience enjoyed by everyone!
