1 Making the finals of the Montrose Night Challenge 2017! Dear Parents, Staff and Pupils Is cricket a team sport or an individual game? Particularly in the shorter form of the game, one player can have an exceptional individual performance which can win the match. In longer forms of the game, the winning side often has contributions and efforts by more than just one player, making it more of a team performance. When you are batting, you are basically on your own, and have to make decisions by yourself that will affect the game, but you still need your teammates to bat with you as your partner. As a bowler, you rely much more on your teammates to field the balls and hold catches off your bowling, making cricket definitely a team sport. In so many ways, the game of cricket is like the game of life. You have to be able to stand on your own, but you also have to be able to play within a team. Families are teams that need to work together, but learning and development in your life is often up to you as an individual to pursue and achieve. At school, you need to work together with your classmates on projects and assignments, but you also need to be able to work and study alone for tests and exams. Many situations that develop in a game of cricket require a player to think and act both as an individual and for the benefit of the team. A player needs to read the game and assess when he is required to put the team s needs first and his own goals second, and when he can play for himself with the support of his teammates. Ray Jennings Dainfern College Cricket Professional I would like to take this opportunity to thank Mr Reuben and Alex for their commitment to the team. They have always been there for us, and they have helped grow our squad into a strong and tight unit. Through their guidance and overall care, they have taken a team who didn t believe anything was possible and showed us our true worth. The season was a disappointment in terms of results; however, we know that we are improving every day and with the help of our coaches, we have found our love of the game. To the boys, I extend thanks for the laughs and the good memories. We can only improve from here on out. Keep working hard and believing in your coaches. Nick Gillard 1st XI Captain
2 This has been a great season for the cricket boys. They have done very well in their matches against various schools and have achieved some terrific results. Dainfern College resident Cricket professional, Ray Jennings (who coached the Royal Challengers Bangalore in the IPL, and also the South African side, including the U19 squad that won the World Cup) coached and mentored the players and the other coaches. The mini programme introduces Grade 1 and 2 boys and girls to cricket. Twice a week they play cricket, and learn new cricketing skills. We aim to teach them the love of the game and hope that they enjoy themselves. In the U9 and U10 programme, we aim to teach fundamental skills and use a rotation system to expose the boys to different scenarios. The Open Cricket boys participated in the Montrose Night Cricket Challenge and made the final. We have had many boys make the NSSSC, Far North teams, and hopefully also Gauteng later this year. It has been a great year so far and we cannot wait for the next cricket season to start. The U13 boys will be going on tour to Durban from 16 to 20 October The U11 boys have also had a terrific season and we are waiting to see how they represent us in the U11 Montrose Night Challenge. Special mention needs to be made of the following boys who made the Far North Teams for 2017: U11: Nick Delport, Ethan Jacobs and Josh Watson. U12: Nick Ford and Luke Carter. U13 William Connellan, Sean Jackson, Daniel Kruger, Josh Horan, James Barnard and Thomas St Clair. We hope to have a wonderful third term and wish all our Cricket players all the best for the upcoming season. Name: Nicholas Watson Nickname and why: Nick. Probably because it s easier to say then Nicholas. Which teams have you played cricket for? Treverton College and the KZN Midlands team. Coaching qualification: GCB Level 2. Team coached: I have coached U9 to First team level at Dainfern, NSSSC, Far North, Gauteng North and Gauteng East Teams Favourite international cricket player: Imran Tahir. He loves his country more than himself. Best cricketing moment: Seeing six of our 1st team Cricket boys make the U13 Far North side. Teams you support: CSK, Proteas, Sydney Thunder. Other sports involvement: Rugby and soccer.
3 The Spur Montrose Night Challenge gives school-goers the opportunity to participate in the only inter-primary school day and night challenge of its kind. The event, which includes cricket and netball matches, ran for seven weeks this year, starting from 27 January and culminating in the final on 10 March The teams are split into four pools, with four teams in each. Matches in each pool take place on a round-robin basis, where each team plays against the other sides in their pool and the winner of the pool then goes through to play in the semifinals and possibly the final. Dainfern College had a wonderful Night Challenge, topping our pool by winning our pool fixtures against Grayston, Crawford Lonehill and Bryandale. We played Montrose (the host school) in the semifinal and won the match from a difficult position due to an excellent batting display from Nick Ford. Dainfern College made its first finals appearance in ten years and played against a strong GCB Lions team. Unfortunately for the boys, the GCB Lions were the better team on the day and won the Montrose Night series. Well done to all the Dainfern College 1st team boys on their achievement and for the hard work and dedication they put in this season. We would like to wish the U11 Night Series boys all the best for their tournament to be played in September. Nick Watson Head of Prep School Cricket Don t forget you can view the Pitch report on the Dainfern College website under Junior, Senior and High School newsletter sections respectively. All previous Pitch Reports are there too. It is also now available on our app!

Area Cricket or any other achievements for the high school Teams have not been selected just yet. Matthew Reuben 1st Team Coach This year, after much planning and debating, Girls Cricket got properly underway when it was decided that we would play our first Cricket match. We were all very excited about the prospect of paying a real opponent, and we welcomed the opportunity to put our skills (learnt from our amazing coaches) to the test. We would be the first group of girls at our school to compete in a Girls Cricket match and the notion that we were making history sat well with all of the girls. Thanks to the exceptional commitment of the team and their hard work during practices, we beat Crawford Sandton by 77 runs. Team spirit was high and we took to and left the field as one unit, eager for another chance to test our skills. Thank you, Mr Morris, and all the coaches for all your time and expertise. We hope Girls Cricket goes from strength to strength in the upcoming years. To the girls of Dainfern College, I urge you to give this great sport a chance - you will not regret it. Danica Davison Girls Cricket Captain Sahil Bramdhaw in action

Many thanks go to Adele Jackson for organising the Cricket Dinner - it was the cricket event of the year! Here s wishing our cricketers a most successful season in 2017/2018.
