13th June 2017 Term 2 Week 9 TUESDAY TELEGRAPH Broncos Cup This term, students from Year 7 to Year 10 have participated in the annual Broncos Cup Challenge. Many schools within our district including Goondiwindi, Warwick, Stanthorpe, Allora, Clifton, Inglewood and Killarney competed against each other in Rugby League and Netball. This year the Broncos Cup Challenge was held over 2 gala days. This allowed our teams to play many games throughout the day. Broncos Cup League team results Our senior and junior league players joined forces with St Joseph school in Stanthorpe and Inglewood SS to make a combined A and B side. Our B side played extremely well over the two days. The team had many new players in the side including our new year 7 players and some Year 8 rookies. Outstanding defence from Harrison S, John L and Lachie P throughout the competition allowed the team to head confidently into the play offs. The B side played off for 5 th and 6 th position against Stanthorpe SHS. Unfortunately, the team lost this game. Our A side team, again combined with Inglewood and St Josephs played Stanthorpe HS for 5 th and 6 th position. Dante P and Logan W were our stand out players over the two Gala days for their excellent determination and leadership skills. Stanthorpe HS again proved to be too strong for our combined team again giving our team the position of 6 th overall. Broncos Cup Netball team results This year we entered two netball teams into the competition. We played in the B grade comp and the C grade comp. After the first day of competition in Goondiwindi, Team Coconut (C grade) were undefeated. While Team Banana (B grade) came away with a draw and a loss. Going into the second day of competition in Warwick both teams were extremely confident. Excellent shooting by B grade shooters Sarra M, Sarah W and Kayle B ensured that our B grade team were undefeated up until the finals. Our B grade team led by Indiah L played off for 3 rd and 4 th position. Unfortunately, nerves got the better of the team and we ended up placing 4 th overall in the B grade division. Team Coconut continued to win throughout the day with only one loss before heading into the Grand Final. Excellent defence from Skye T, Sophie M and Monique M ensured that we were the team to beat. Again our nerves proved too much with our C Grade players. Our C Grade team placed 2 nd overall in their division, a fantastic achievement from this team. A big congratulation to our amazing staff members who have been training the students over the last two terms and travelled with the students to the games. Great Job guys!!!
PRIMARY NEWS Prep/Year 1 News Ms Nettie Students have been very busy last week and this week completing assessment tasks related to the subjects they have been learning about. If you check your curriculum snapshot for this term, you can see what tasks we are working on. It has been a slow process, but the students are working very hard and demonstrating that they are all active learners! We have now set up a shop on our veranda complete with a working cash register! Thank you to the families who sent in boxes and containers. It has been quite popular, even with some of the older students! This Wednesday, the community health nurse will be visiting the prep students for a health check-up. All School Health Screening forms need to be in by Wednesday please. Congratulations to the students who received certificates during the last two parades: Prep Sight Word Certificate Nevaeh and Jack - List 1 Sight Words Year 1 Sight Word Certificate Amelia List 9 Sight Words Lillie List 11, 12 Sight Words Abhi List 13 Sight Words Nash List 12, 13, 14 Sight Words Coen and Addison List 12, 13, 14 Sight Words CONGRATULATIONS to Oliver and Aiden who now know ALL 20 Sight Word Lists! *Students of the Week Prep Megan and Max Year 1 Lillie and Olivia **All ACTIVE LEARNERS. Well done! ** Year 4 News Mrs Ramsay Congratulations to the following Students of the Week: Helene, Leah, Kate This week we will be investigating money in maths. Students will calculate change using a range of strategies. We will also estimate amounts of money using rounding, add and subtract money amounts and solve problems involving purchases. Money is a very important concept for students to understand. They will need this in their everyday lives. Please help your child by providing some shop scenarios where they have to calculate the amount of change they need to give. In science, we are comparing and contrasting life cycles of plants and animals. We will define the meaning of the word life-cycle, and understand that lifecycles can have similarities and differences.
PRINCIPAL NEWS Week 9 and our whole school attendance is currently at 92.1%, slightly below our target of 93%, but equal to our 2016 figure. Student attendance for very good reasons attracts a high amount of focus, however perhaps a better way to phrase our focus would be aiming to eliminate all non-essential absences. I appreciate given our location students will occasionally need to be absent for required appointments, and if students are sick they are best placed to recover at home and minimise the risk of sharing their illness. Thank you to the vast majority of families who do adopt this approach and I apologise if it causes some angst at home with your children when they really are too sick to attend but still want to come to school. I would argue this is a lovely problem to have as it shows a commitment to their schooling which we certainly want to grow and foster. With the end of term approaching please engage with your children in relation to how they are progressing with their assessments. Feel free to contact your child s teacher if you believe further support is required to assist your son/daughter in understanding what they are currently learning, how they are going and what they need to do to demonstrate what they ve learnt (how they are being assessed). Last week I listed a range of information relating to our end of semester reporting and parent teacher interviews. Please see below for a diagram highlighting the processes. Due to our athletics carnival being held on Thursday 3 August and Friday 4 August parent teacher interviews will occur during week 5 (beginning Monday 7 August). More information will be provided with the student report cards. Have a great week Justin.

Chatter with Jason Connecting with young people, part 2. When it comes to connecting with secondary students, quality time is still a big factor, but there are several more that really make the difference. As with younger students, you still need to find the point of engagement, be able to find some commonality in the conversation. This means that sometimes as adults we need to let them talk and not just be the talker. They also need to know we are genuine. Teenagers can spot a fake adult from miles away, they need to know and feel that you are really there for them and not just because its your job or you feel like you have to. You cannot force good relationships or healthy connections, they need to grow and develop. The other factor to consider is your story. We have all lived varied lives of good times and turmoil and survived! Think about your journey, how you got through things and how you can share your stories to connect with the young people around you? Time, genuinness and story. More of my story next week.
Please Note no Choir Week One Term 3. Week two will be as normal Come and listen to the junior school choir this Thursday afternoon the 15th at Parade. The following Thursday the 22nd we will be hearing form the high school choir.
