1 Number 27 30/08/2017 WEB: PHONE: (03) Dear School Community, Our Healthy Smiles Dental Program took place last Friday and by all accounts, the session was very informative and well presented. All Grade Prep to Three students had the opportunity to participate in discussion and activities around good dental hygiene and even got to take some free fridge magnets and toothbrushes home with them. Our Sporting Schools Golf program also continued last Friday and students enjoyed the better weather on offer. All groups were able to whack some balls around on our school oval and enjoyed participating in modified golf games that promoted the specific striking skills being learnt. Despite our Athletics taking place in Winter this year, we really were quite lucky with the weather. It was a cool start to the day but as the sun came out, the ground thawed and everyone had a terrific day. A highlight for me was hearing about our success in the Parloof Relay at the end of the day and in seeing the many smiles from our students throughout the day. Thank you to all of our staff and organiser Kate Nicholls for providing such a great day of fun and exercise for our students. Mrs Woolley has organised a Cluster Chess Tournament at Katandra West Primary School today and we have five competitors from Congupna Primary School attending. We wish them all the very best and look forward to hearing how they have done. Don t forget about our Father s Day Stall on Thursday. Children are encouraged to bring a maximum of $5 for Dad or a maximum of $10 for Dad and Grandfathers. Thank you to the P & F Group for providing this opportunity for our students. send students to school dressed as a favourite book character and we will have a parade at the end of the day at School Assembly to celebrate! Finally, at the time of publication my family has still not welcomed a third child! In an effort to minimise disruption to the grade 2/3 classroom in my absence, I have invited Amy Van Popering to return once more and teach over the next two Wednesday/Thursdays while I will be on Paternity Leave. This will ensure that students have no more than two teachers throughout these two weeks. Pizza and some presentations will follow concluding by 6pm. It has been a fantastic year on the pitch and will be a great opportunity to thank everyone that makes our weekend soccer matches a possibility. Unfortunately, a clash of dates has rendered our annual Cluster Book Week Day un-attendable. We do recognise how much children love participating in Book Week activities however, so we will be holding our own Book Week celebrations on Friday 8 th September. 2 Classroom Update 4/5/6 The Solar Boat Challenge is on again and the senior room is again participating with a goal to get more technical. With the guidance of Tony Uniacke, the class are using his expertise to shape their boats into streamlined shapes. The boats start out as a block of foam and are cut using the hot wire. The use of a special solar panel to measure the strength of the sun shall give the student s the ability to change the size of the propeller to adjust to the conditions. This should give the students more data to crunch to get the best from their boats. This year our team names are: The Sea Smashers Warrior Power Danger Zone Sea Shockers How do you find the Solar Boat Challenge? Mason: It s pretty fun because you get to work as a team Josh R : Fun and I enjoy the building of our boat Charlotte: It s fun to build your very own solar boat.

It was a tough game against Tatura as they were good defenders, but we wore them down and Tate got 2 great goals: 1 from a sideline kick in and the other from a centre kick-off.

5 Congupna Cruisers Round 14 Wrap Under 6 s What a beautiful day for soccer last week and we had all 8 players ready for action. Hamish was our captain and he lead by example showing us all the great dribbling skills he had been practicing at training the day before. It was a tough game against Tatura as they were good defenders, but we wore them down and Tate got 2 great goals: 1 from a sideline kick in and the other from a centre kick-off. Spirits were high and fun was had by everyone. Awards went to Asim for getting more kicks than he has ever had in a game before and almost getting a goal. Hamish got an award for his dribbling skills and Cooper got the pizza award for his effort and putting his body on the line time after time to stop Tatura getting a kick. No training this week but I look forward to seeing all players and parents at the soccer breakup Friday night. Go Cruisers! Coach Jason Under 7 s A lovely morning greeted us on Saturday for our penultimate game and the team had its best game for the year so far! It included what was easily goal of the season where all players were involved in the lead-up play followed by a lofted pass that was centred and the ball being controlled off the striker s chest with a clinical one-touch finish! Needless to say the coach was very impressed. More than this though, was our player s resilience in the face of some quite physical opposition play. Despite being pushed to the ground, all players kept bobbing up and continuing to go in after the ball and play team soccer. The passing and dribbling was a highlight. The end result was a very impressive 12-1 victory with all players scoring at least one goal. It was decided then and there to award all players an award for their outstanding efforts! Well done Cruisers! Coach Cleary Under 8 s The under 8 team played St Brendan s. We had a great start to the game with James scoring to first half goals and we went into the second half even with 2-2. The second half saw a number of fast breaks and many attempts at goals from both sides, unfortunately the Cruisers were unable to make any count ( although we do think one may have made it over the line before the goal keeper stopped it if only with had video review technology ). St Brendan s were able to hit the back of the net once in the second half to come with a win 3-2. Coach Linton Under 10 s U 10's played against Bourchier St with final scores 2/1 Bourchier St way. Again well done to the whole team, you are all passing the ball and really working together as a team, great to see. Our goal kicker this week was Sean.
